Top Performer Spotlight: 2020 3B Eugene Jeon

Les Lukach
State Scouting Director

As we head into the fall/winter season we will be publishing "Top Performer Spotlights" on players who really stood out at past PBR California events and/or the summer circuit. In this edition we'll take a look at 2020 3B Eugene Jeon, the 45th ranked player in the recently updated PBR California Class of 2020 rankings.

When you play on a team with players as highly regarded as Jeon's teammates are at La Mirada, it can be easy to get overlooked. Jeon has managed to avoid that trap and appears to have found his rhythm at the plate where his power is really beginning to show. Add to that the instincts he displays while on defense and what you get is a very good player. One that is going to be hard to overlook any time soon.

NOTE: Be sure to click on Eugene's name to see video we recently got of him at our SoCal Underclass Games.

TOP PERFORMER SPOTLIGHT

QUICK TAKE

Jeon is beginning to show the power many anticipated would come with continued physical maturation and game reps. He hit some tanks during BP at the SoCal Underclass Games including one half-way up the netting beyond left-center field. And while he was late on a couple curveballs in-game, he shows the ability to barrel those as well. Jeon is a very good/smart baserunner as he showed in-game busting out of the box on a hard-hit ball to shortstop that forced an error. Defensively Joen is showing improvement with the glove. His footwork and arm play now, the nuances that come with game reps are beginning to show themselves too. Showed excellent instincts in-game when a slow roller drew the shortstop in beyond the baseline and the mound and runner was safe. Jeon covered second base keeping the runner at first.

SCOUTING REPORT

8/1/18 - SoCal Underclass Games - Five-foot-10, 180-pounds, large frame that is proportionally strong from shoulders down through the legs. Jeon, the 45th ranked player in the Class of 2020 Top 100 Rankings, showed big power at the plate from a balanced setup and simple load. Jeon shows easy bat speed and quick hands. Excellent barrel awareness. Shows to be aggressive early in his AB's looking to punish balls. Fairly good mistake pitch hitter. Drive balls to all fields on a line. Shows good instincts when running the bases. Defensively he shows an easy, loose arm from third base. Backhand is there. Has ability to make the barehanded throws. There's accuracy and carry on his throws. Has enough arm to make throws from all angles on the bag. His footwork is fluid and hands are soft with clean exchanges. Heady ballplayer on the field.

4/3/18 - 4/6/18 - Looks to be filling out more, and has some physicality at the plate. Hands are clean and arm shows carry. Short path to the ball on uphill plane. Front foot bails, so he is susceptible to the outside corner, but also hit some balls very hard. The tools are there to work with.
