Top Performer Spotlight: 2021 CF Tyree Reed

Blaine Clemmens
Northern California Director of Scouting

As we head into the fall/winter season we will be publishing "Top Performer Spotlights" on players who stood out at past PBR California events and/or the summer circuit. In this edition we'll take a look at 2021 CF Tyree Reed, a top-10 ranked player in the most recent PBR California 2021 rankings.

It's not as though Reed is a secret. He's twice been on Team USA national teams, including playing a major role on the 15U team recently crowned world champions. By the time the 2021 draft comes along, Reed very likely will be in play as a high round draft prospect. As of this post he's still going through the recruiting process and has not selected a college program. That will come in due time.  We saw Reed twice in June, at the Bay Area World Series (BAWS), a PBR officially scouted event, and at the Northern California underclass trials, and also observed him at an NCTB tournament in July, which was another PBR officially scouted event.

Let's take a closer look at Tyree Reed.

TOP PERFORMER SPOTLIGHT

QUICK TAKE

It's easy to appreciate Reed's baseball talents, such as his plus speed and range, bat speed and arm strength. He moves gracefully and seemingly glides in the outfield and on the bases. There are some mechanics he can work out in regard to throwing and his stride, but the tools are all present and he will have plenty of choices regarding college and eventually pro baseball. What is often hardest for recruiters and scouts to know about players are the intangibles of a player. On four occasions I've been on the field around Reed, at team workouts and showcases, and have taken the time to closely observe him as a teammate, observe his coachability, and talk/banter with him. What I've learned is that Reed's positive intangibles exceed his considerable baseball talents.

SCOUTING REPORT

6/12/18 - Remains uncommitted, evaluation took place at PBR Northern California underclass trials. Posted the top combination of metrics of all players at the trials, with 6.86 60 yard time, 86 mph outfield velocity, as well as an 80+ mph exit velocity. Roamed the outfield during the BP round shagging and making plays. Offensively showed off bat speed and a short swing, does tend to close off his hips a bit with his stride but has the hand speed to compensate. Throws leave his hand very easily but can develop more carry and length with some mechanical adjustments. Everything he does looks easy.

6/1/18-6/3/18 @ BAWS 2018 - Uncommitted. Long and lanky 6-foot-2 170-pound centerfielder is one of Northern California's top 2021 prospects and rates with the best players in the state. Balanced, wide stance with even hands; ability to drop the barrel onto the ball. Showed raw pull power during BP with ability to drive the gap as well. During game had times where he drove ball to middle of field and even showed attempt to drop bunt for hit. Plus arm with very compact arm action; times where he will limit his follow through which can sap some strength. Athletic and graceful runner with fluid stride down the line and ability to steal bases; 4.30 H-1st not reflective of his raw speed. Roams the outfield like a ball hawk.
