Uncommitted 2020 Spotlight: 3B/SS Jeter Ybarra

Mountain View, CA - 2020 3B/SS Jeter Ybarra was a regular viewing during my Central Coast Section coverage in the 2019 season playing for St. Francis in the West Catholic League, a league known for it's high level of competition. Ybarra was consistently solid in 2019 playing SS early in the season before moving to 3B later, and that's the position he looks ready to take leaps at during the 2020 season.
The long, lanky frame looks the part of a player for the next level with a left-handed swing that is made to work gap-to-gap. The frame has space to keep adding strength and that added maturity and strength would see a lot of the measurables make jumps. Defensively the transition to 3rd was a good one for Ybarra allowing him to take the timing and rhythm he showed at SS and giving him the ability to cut balls off and utilize his clean release to put throws across the diamond. Below is a collection of videos, notes and stats showcasing the upside of 2020 3B/SS Jeter Ybarra.

Scouting ReportS

10/06/19: PBR Norcal Uncommitted Senior Games - Long and lean strength in lanky body at 6-foot-3, 185-pounds; frame still has space for some added girth yet he still ‘looks the part’ with his present stature. Quick first step at the hot corner making plays in game and showing the footwork of a former SS (which he was). Athleticism and arm strength are evident and he made a great play in game on a back hand keeping a low line across the diamond. The carry he gets comes from good fundamentals with his release, with a high of 78 mph in his workout throws, which is an area of improvement for him. The LH swing stays tight allowing him to work the middle and opposite side of the field with late upward barrel speed; flashed some pull power as well. As muscle from physical maturity happens he’s a good bet to improve on the 89 mph exit velocity he showed in 5 swings off the tee.

5/31/19: BAWS 2019Long, XL frame with wide shoulders and projectable muscle throughout; frame has space to add to it and projects well. Keeps hands high with a high back elbow from the left side keeping posture and allowing the body to turn quickly. Hands show slight pull down and back staying above the baseball through contact; swing has quick upwards arc timing the swing with his back hip well. Drove the ball with some authority to the pull gap showing carry that way (87 EV). Found a lot of barrels during the games as well with only a hit to show. Wide, low hips moves through the ball well with fluid first step; able to create positive angles and flashing control of his body on the move. Arm is loose and fluid able to make throws from different angles with limited effort (78 MPH).

2/20/19 vs Los Gatos - Uncommitted; started at SS and had an impressive day. He’s got a long frame with a high waist and lean strength throughout. Defensively, he showed strong range during pregame with the ability to keep in time and have control of his body on the move showing an arm that will stick on the left side of the diamond. During the game he was very good showing off his soft glove and loose arm until the bottom of the 7th when he skipped two routine throws extending the opportunities for Los Gatos. At the plate, he keeps his hands high with a slight bend in the legs while keeping an open stance. The hands work back and up into the shoulder during the load keeping a quiet front foot and creating stretch. He flashed some barrel control smoking a ball into the RCF gap in his first AB before hitting another one hard into LF during his third AB, drawing a walk in between. He finished the day with two RBI’s and if he can find consistency on defense looks like a guy that can play at the next level.
