SANTA BARBARA, CALIF. - This past Sunday, October 25th, the Prep Baseball California team hosted the Central Coast Fall ID at San Marcos High School in Santa Barbara, Cal. This was an open event for all high school classes (2027-2030), and gave our staff an ample look at some of that area's and surrounding areas' top or upcoming players.

Around 20 players made their way to San Marcos High School and participated in a pro-style workout, gathering unrivaled access to data through our state-of-the-art tech partners, as well as in-depth scouting analysis from our Prep Baseball California staff. For a closer look at the showcase details and the technologies we had on-site to assist our in-person evaluation for all in attendance, click here.

To start the day, all position players in attendance were electronically measured for height, weighed in, and recorded grip strength readings. From there, they ran a 60-yard sprint, with all split times being gathered using VALD Technologies' laser timing system. Upon completion of the athletic and body testing portion of the day, the players went into offensive evaluations with multiple rounds of batting practice, where TrackMan Technologies and Blast Motion swing trackers were in use to gather batted ball and swing data on players in attendance, in addition under going Vizual Edge testing and VALD Jump testing. This was then followed by defensive evaluations at their primary and secondary position (OF, C, SS, 1B) with arm strength being measured via a Stalker Radar gun and skill evaluations by our staff on hand. Once the batting practice portion of the event was completed, we shifted into the pitching portion of the day with pitchers throwing bullpens from the main mound with Trackman Technologies running to gather pitch data.

Today, we will be looking at some of the top overall performers from the event, found below. For all of the event information, please click here.

2028 STANDOUTS:

Jerry Gonzales SS / RHP / oxnard, CA / 2028

Gonzales has been a two-year standout on the varsity level at Oxnard High School, hitting near the top of their order and playing solid defense at SS. He was also a strong performer at the Central Coast Summer ID, before returning for the Fall version of our Central Coast ID series with an outstanding showing across the board. The bat-to-ball in his offensive profile stood out during BP with consistent on-the-barrel contact and improved leverage through contact, which saw increases in his average exit velocity, max distance, hard-hit percentage, sweet spot rate, and ball-in-the-air contact from his previous event, evidencing the upward trend in impact in his offensive profile. With sound swing metrics across the board from 21 MPH hand speeds to nearly 70 MPH of bat speed and 15+ Gs of rotational acceleration that all have room to keep ticking up as he continues to add strength to his frame which has started to tick up with added muscle since the July event. Defensively and athletically, Gonzales has always presented a solid up-the-middle profile with enough in the arm to potentially play SS at the next level while having the footwork, hands, and awareness to project on that side, but comfortably handle either 2B or CF should he need to make a move off the spot, while maintaining an up-the-middle profile. Gonzales will be a key piece of the Yellowjackets program again in 2027 as they look to build on a strong finish to the 2026 season with a young core on the rise highlighted by the talented Gonzales.

Grant Patch RHP / 3B / Templeton High, CA / 2028

This was my first live look at Patch, but he was a name who had been recommended to me by people on the coast as a player to take a look at for his next-level upside. The two-way product out of Templeton showed a strong overall foundation with a sound physical frame that can continue to mature with added strength in the coming years, while adding quality athletic ability evidenced by his testing via our VALD systems, including a 7.1 60-yard sprint time that included intriguing burst off the line with a 1.58 10-yard split, adding the second-best vertical jump in attendance going over 25" and, for good measure, one of the best five-hop tests. That athleticism translates into quality present raw tools as a baseball player which, as he continues to polish each of those tools over his final two years of high school development, give him potential on each side of the game. His swing has present bat speed peaking at around 72 MPH with nearly 22 MPH of hand speed and the ability to produce torque at over 16 Gs of rotational acceleration. Those raw swing metrics translated into sound present impact when he barreled the baseball, including a max EV of almost 93 MPH, and he can tap into increased power potential by cleaning up the contact points and timing in his approach to drive the ball in the air to the middle of the field or pull side at a more consistent rate. Defensively, he moves with sound actions, including feel for his footwork rhythm and angles into the baseball, to go with soft two-hand fielding actions and the arm strength to profile as a potential solid defender at 3B in the long term should his profile stick as a position player. Patch threw a bullpen to close out his session, demonstrating an intriguing two-pitch mix with raw present arm strength and arm quickness to produce life on his stuff, with intriguing ability to spin the baseball. Grant ran his FB up into the 85 MPH range with plenty of potential for more as he adds more use of his lower 1/2 in the operation while generating over 2350 RPMs of spin on the offering with a cut ride shape that had up to 17+ inches of IVB with horizontal movement averaging around 5" on each FB. Behind that Patch has an intriguing SLD which will generate over 2650 RPMs of spin at peak while averaging just under 2600 RPMs on each SLD thrown including upwards of 16" of horizontal break with around 5" of IVB giving the offering two-plane break with some present power to the offering living at 74-78 MPH and like his FB and overall delivery has more in the tank. Patch missed his sophomore season due to a non-arm-related injury, but will be a player I'm paying attention to this spring as he continues to develop and face off against varsity-level competition and beyond.

2029 STANDOUTS:

Luke Trigg SS / 2B / San Marcos Senior High, CA / 2029

This was Trigg's debut attendance at a Prep Baseball California event, and the rising name on the Central Coast put together the best all-around performance of any player in attendance. Checking in with a 5'11", 155-ish lbs. frame that you can dream on adding mass in the coming years as he keeps maturing, to go with upper-tier athletic ability which included a sound 6.9 60 that will improve as he improves his body control & strength, to go with a 1.6 10-yard split and event best max vertical of nearly 26" as a sophomore. That frame and athletic ability provide plenty of projection for Trigg in the coming years, but when you look at what is already a strong overall foundation of baseball ability, the ceiling for this talented 2029 rises even higher. Defensively, he shines with quick-twitch actions, rhythm into routine plays, while showing burst and body control to play with tempo downhill. His hands are soft, with confidence to play one- or two-handed as the ball dictates, into a clean, quick transfer that allows him to throw from a variety of arm slots accurately with an 80 MPH INF velocity that relies more on quickness of transfer and accuracy rather than pure arm strength, allowing one to believe there is plenty more in the tank, giving easy confidence to believe that Trigg will not only be a strong defender at SS at the high school level, but one who can play the spot at the next level. His defensive workout on its own was impressive, but then you add in the quality of what he showed during batting practice from swing metrics to swing path to rhythm and timing with strength through contact give him a top of the order offensive upside. Trigg generates an impressive 28+ Gs of rotational acceleration while posting swing speeds up to nearly 69 MPH from a compact, leverage-based stroke that uses hand quickness (nearly 22 MPH) to produce intriguing batted ball data. The RH hitter posted a max EV of over 93 MPH with an average EV of 86 MPH and strong underlying batted ball data, with the ability to hit the ball hard at a variety of angles, with a 40% hard-hit rate and nearly 50% sweet spot rate and a 334' max distance, showing a strong hit tool with doubles power from line to line that can develop into more in the future. This is going to be a strong 2029 follow for college programs as a true SS with defensive ability at a high level and offensive impact in the profile.

Tyler Weber C / 2B / San Marcos Senior High, CA / 2029

Weber has been a consistent attendee at Prep Baseball California events, and the rising sophomore has consistently shown a RH offensive profile that can provide impact to a lineup at the high school level and has the future upside to be an impact one at the next level. He takes a high-intent swing (76-82 MPH max bat speeds with 77 at this event) that does impressive damage from his compact frame to post max EVs north of 95 MPH on a consistent rate for a sophomore, including one just a tick under 97 at this event. Along with bat speed and quality impact, Weber shows a sound awareness for producing hard contact in the air, with nearly 60% of his contact in the air at the Fall ID and having posted a nearly 80% ball-in-the-air rate at previous events. He reached a new PR with a 366' homer to straightaway left, which easily cleared the LF wall and almost left the yard on multiple other swings, showing emerging power already as a sophomore who can continue to tick that element of his game up as he continues to mature physically and within his approach. With a solid to strong offensive profile, the next step for Weber is to solidify a primary position defensively as he shows potential behind the plate, on the INF at 2B or possibly in the corner OF in the future. The hands and feet continue to improve on the INF dirt, and he is a sound receiver behind the plate who shows aptitude for blocking. As he continues to add arm strength and build on a sound present athletic profile, his defensive home will emerge, but there is no question he has the ability to add quality impact to any part of a lineup for the high school level or potentially at the next level.

Bradley Brennan 3B / 2B / San Marcos Senior High, CA / 2029

Another first-time attendee at a Prep Baseball California event, the LH hitting Brennan put together one of the most well-rounded if not the most well-rounded, batting practice sessions. He employs a simple stroke that comes from a quiet load with quickness in his hands going up around 24 MPH with an impressive ability to generate torque (22+ Gs of rotational acceleration) all into a short, direct path that has north of 67 MPH of present bat speed. The simplicity of his operation and quality of how his hands work in the stroke allowed him to the barrel on the baseball in different quadrants of the strike zone to drill line drives through the middle of the field or the pull side. Brennan went as high as nearly 93 MPH with his max EV, but was consistently finding hard contact throughout BP with a 84 MPH average EV, while that contact came predominantly at the optimal angles with a 67% sweet spot rate (event best). In a game that values LH hitters who present an ability to hit at a high level the offensive skillset for Brennan will draw notice, but he backs it up with a sound defensive profile on the INF dirt. He works with good rhythm in his footwork, soft hands that can play one- or two-handed to any angle, with a clean quick transfer that relies on quickness of release to go with accuracy on his throws. His athleticism and actions all profile most comfortably at either 2B or 3B. Just a sophomore who can continue to develop his overall foundation in the coming years, Brennan shows a strong one to build at present and will be a name to keep tabs on for the Central Coast region in the coming years.

2030 STANDOUTS:

Teo Patterson LHP / OF / San Marcos Senior High, CA / 2030

Patterson was one of the more intriguing players in attendance as an athletic two-way player who, as just a freshman in high school, shows plenty of ability to dream on both as a LHH CF profile defender or athletic, moving loose arm southpaw on the bump. On this day, Patterson shone slightly brighter as a LH hitter with an intriguing swing that shows strong present metrics, with plenty to dream on as his present 5'11 142 lbs. frame adds more strength in the coming years. With an aggressive swing that produces over 69 MPH of present bat speed to go with quick hands that generate 20 MPH of present hand speed, he drives the ball with leverage through the middle to pull side of the ball effectively for a freshman who could develop into an impact LHH offensive profile. Patterson reached nearly 89 MPH on his max EV with a hard line drive into the RCF gap while averaging 83 MPH of EV across all his balls in play during his batting practice session. He swings with intent and as his timing, approach keep developing in the coming years his ability to drive the ball with a bat path geared for leverage and effective use of his lower 1/2 is trending towards the profile of a top of the order hitter who possesses a high hit tool to go with doubles power through the middle/opposite field and HR power to the pull side of the field. His athleticism and arm stroke project him into a CF defensive profile that could be a strong or impact one with maturity. While his velocity will not jump off the page at present, the athletic way in which Patterson moves down the mound, the cleanness to his arm path, and the shapes of his pitches give plenty of intrigue when his upper-end velocity arrives in the coming years. Patterson throws a FB with an intriguing cut ride shape that produced around 1" of average horizontal movement with 10+" of average IVB that sets up a 12+" breaking SLD that has -3+" of IVB, giving him two glove-side moving offerings out of the same slot that produce difficult shapes for hitters to handle. He mixed in an emerging CHG that runs to his arm side almost 6" at present, which, as he learns to kill spin and separate vertically off his FB shape, will give him a quality third offering. All in all, as just a freshman, the foundation of Patterson already gives you the type of ceiling you can dream on in the coming years and will be a strong follow in the class going forward.

Colt Minus RHP / 3B / Santa Ynez Valley Union High, CA / 2030

Minus enters high school as an intriguing name on the Central Coast, and the 6'1 180+ lbs right-hander solidified that intrigue with a quality bullpen session that will make him a heavily followed arm for me going forward. The overall operation for Minus is smooth, athletic, and requires minimal effort with his body to produce a loose, quick arm action that uncorks strong present stuff for a rising freshman who has yet to turn 15 (14 years 9 months at attendance). Minus maintains good direction throughout his move down the mound and releases from a 5'5" release height with present extensions out to 5'9". He showed off a three-pitch mix of a FB, SLD, and CHG that each have present ability with projection to add more life in the coming years. Colt features a primary 77-81 MPH FB that has intriguing spin at present, with 2280 RPMs of average spin and 2361 RPMs at its peak to generate upwards of 16" of IVB and 11" of HM while averaging 13" of IVB and 6" of horizontal movement to give it the upside of being a cut ride offering. Minus throws an interesting SLD that flashes whiff potential now and even greater in the future as it adds power/velocity. Presently, the SLD lives in the 69-71 MPH range with north of 2200 RPMs of spin and generates upwards of 21" of glove-side break while averaging around 14+" of glove-side break and has depth in the profile to go as low as -3.9" of IVB with an average of -0.7" of IVB. He added the makings of a potential solid CHG that comes in at 76-77 MPH with some present vertical separation and arm-side movement, but as he learns to kill the spin on the offering and maintain his arm speed profiles to be a strong offering in the future to give him an arm-side-moving offering. Colt looks the part of a long-term starter profile with a prototype frame to build on, clean, athletic delivery, and solid present stuff to grow on that will be high on my radar going forward in the 2030 class.
