SAN DIEGO, CALIF. - Baseball seems to get more and more exciting as we continue league play and grow closer to playoffs. Take a look below at some of the exciting matchups and standout players from last week including multiple Power 25 teams. My fellow San Diego transplant Ben VavRosky with the notes on Point Loma vs. St. Augustine.

Santa Fe Christian vs. La Jolla Country Day

’24 OF Jack Haferkamp (UCSB) - The Future Games and ProCase attendee showed out on my second time seeing him play. On the day he went 2/3 with a triple and a single with two RBIs and two stolen bases. What impressed me more was the process of his at bats. The takes were competitive and each of the at bats I saw had excellent plate discipline and zone awareness. He continually fouled balls off and battled until he got pitches to hit in two strike counts. And hit well… his triple went the other way on a hard line drive that got past the right fielder where he showed the speed to hustle to third.


’25 OF Jackson Norum (Uncommitted) - Another good viewing of Norum… same high leverage swing with hard contact as he continues his great year slashing: .357/.449/.679 with 9XBH including 4HRs, 8 SBs. He continues to show strength and athleticism in all of his movements on the field. He roped a hard line drive into the LF corner for a standup RBI double. The whole operation works and has shown to be effective against a plethora of D1 competition on the mound.


’24 RHP Will Marenghi (Davidson) - Marenghi tossed a complete game against La Jolla Country Day only surrendering two runs across his start. The mix was effective with a FB running up to 88 mph in his third inning. He flashed a splitter that looked really good with late break. He also showed a CB that worked to steal strikes early in counts and chases down in the zone. The motion is repeatable with a strong lead leg anchoring his setup. There were multiple different leg lift heights that produced the same arm slot and delivery following hand break. He ended the day with the win and 10 Ks.

No. 9 Cathedral Catholic vs. No. 16 Patrick Henry

This two-game league matchup between these two Power 25 teams ended in a stalemate with each team picking up the win at home. Patrick Henry won 2-1 and Cathedral Catholic won 11-4. 

’25 RHP/SS Cody Cappelletti (Uncommitted) - Cathedral Catholic vs. Patrick Henry is a high-octane environment and Cappelletti showed his makeup in this tight game. He went the distance going all seven innings striking out six. Throughout the entire appearance, Cappelletti was low pulse and level-headed on the mound. His stuff was on. Flashing three offspeed pitches that were working, Cappelletti spotted all three on the edges keeping hitters unbalanced. He sat 86-88 throughout his performance and even reached back to touch 90 mph in his final inning. CB: 68-71, SL: 74-75, CH: 70



’26 SS Alex Harrington (Stanford) - Harrington made up a larger part of Cathedral Catholic’s offense coming out of the leadoff spot. In his first at bat, he ripped a single through the 6-hole after battling deap into the count. In the top of the sixth inning, he roped a ball down the line for another single that the third basemen got a glove on. Harrington also held it down at short, showing strong range and composure making off-balance throws on the money.


’26 OF Tyson Bobo (Uncommitted) - Bobo came up in an important situation in the fourth inning. The Patriots did have the lead but it always felt like CC was threatening. With a runner on third, Bobo grabbed the eventual game-winning sac fly to make the score 2-1. In the sixth inning, Bobo made a potential game-saving throw following a hard line drive that he cut off in the gap. He came up throwing, nailing the runner trying to stretch a single into a double.

No. 12 St. Augustine vs. Point Loma

Point Loma completed the upset sweep over St. Augustine last week winning 2/2 only allowing one run throughout the entire series.

‘25 RHP Grayson Boles (Texas) - Boles was a dominant force on the mound for another time this spring. Working the fastball on the corners as well as a nasty curveball. Also worked in an effective change up that tunneled well with his fastball. Velocity carried throughout his 5 innings of work with the off-speed getting more effective as the game went on. 

Boles racked up 5 K’s and only allowed 5 base runners only giving up 1 hit. Was able to work out of jams in the early innings. Had a calm presence on the mound in what was a big game against another stud in Sanford. 

‘24 RHP Will Sanford (Oregon) - Sanford put up one of the most dominant games I’ve seen so far this spring in 6 innings. Sanford racked up 13 strikeouts without allowing a hit. Giving up only 3 walks through 6, Sanford had the St. Augustine hitters off balance and guessing all day. 

Sanford's fastball was working to perfection with late life and was a magnet to the corners. Sanford overpowered hitters with the fastball and effectively mixed in the off-speed, keeping hitters off balance. The command although a bit wild at times, it’s effectively wild due to the velocity on the fastball.
