St. Louis Winter Open Analysis: Outfielders

Prep Baseball Report-Missouri held the St. Louis Winter Open Showcase at the Sports Barn in Wentzville, MO on February 8.  Over seventy players in the 2021 to 2024 classes attended.

Today, we will take a look at the outifielders from the day.  Player profiles have been updated with running times and velocities along with a video of their performance. Players listed below are in alphabetical order.

OUTFIELDERS

JAKE MARKERT OF / SS 
FORT ZUMWALT SOUTH, MO / 2021

Markert is a lean and athletic 5-foot-9, 160-pound, right-handed hitting outfielder in Missouri’s 2021 class. Washburn University (Topeka) commit. At the event he ran a 6.96 second 60 and posted an exit velocity of 91 mph, both improvements from his previous event. At the plate, Markert starts in an athletic stance, simple load with quiet hands, stride is slightly closed off, flat bat path, controls the barrel, produced middle and opposite field contact during round. Defensively, good actions in the outfield, fluid footwork, clean exchanges, high three-quarter release, strong arm with carry, positional velo of 90 mph, accurate throws.

CAMRON POE LHP / OF
CBC, MO / 2023

Poe has a solid, athletic build at 6-foot-1, 180 pounds. Currently he is an outfielder and left-handed pitcher in Missouri’s 2023 class. He ran a 7.09 second 60 and posted an exit velocity of 88 mph. At the plate, athletic stance, simple weight shift load, negative movement with hands, leverages a firm front side, plus bat speed, produced hard contact to the middle and pull sides of the field. Defensively, smooth actions in the outfield, clean exchanges, momentum towards target, strong arm, positional velo of 88 mph with carry, accurate throws. On the mound, Poe has an athletic build, long limbs, projectable frame, easy delivery, directional towards the plate, quick arm, three-quarter release, repeats with downhill tilt, three pitch mix for strikes. Fastball sits 86-87 mph, will turnover a 2 seam with more movement at 85 mph, around the zone, curveball is 69-72 mph, flashes some depth, 1-to-7 shape, change to be a plus pitch as Poe develops, changeup is 76-77 mph with fade, thrown for strikes.

CHRISTIAN CHINEN OF 
KALANI , HI / 2022

Chinen is a 5-foot-6, 140-pound, right-handed hitting outfielder in Hawaii’s 2022 class. At the event, he ran a 6.89 second 60 and posted an exit velocity of 77 mph. At the plate, Chinen starts in a slightly open but balanced stance, simple weight shift load, some rhythm to hands, in line stride, balanced throughout, aggressive with back hip, high finish with hands, looked to lift the baseball and produced middle to pull side contact during round. Defensively, Chinen shows his athleticism in the outfield, attacks the baseball, fluid footwork, long arm, clean arm action, 87 mph positional velo with mostly accurate throws.

ELIJAH KJELLBERG OF
PARKWAY CENTRAL, MO / 2022

Kjellberg is a lean 6-foot, 155-pound, right-handed hitting outfield prospect in Missouri’s 2022 class. He ran a 7.15 second 60 and posted an exit velocity of 83 mph. During hitting evaluations, Kjellberg shows a lean and projectable frame, long limbs, balanced set up, smooth load with hands, works against a firm front side, aggressive with back hip, produced primarily ground ball contact to his middle and pull sides during round. Defensively, aggressive the baseball, clean exchanges, quick transfer to throws, over the top release, strong arm with 86 mph positional velocity.

JUSTIN COLEMAN RHP / OF 
TIMBERLAND, MO / 2021

Coleman is a 6-foot, 175-pound, right-handed hitting outfield prospect and right-handed pitcher in Missouri’s 2021 class. He ran a 6.87 second 60 and posted and exit velocity 84 mph exit velocity, both improvements from his previous event. At the plate, Coleman starts slightly open, smooth load, in line stride, some rhythm with hands, feel for the barrel, minimal head movement, looked to lift the baseball during round, showed primarily middle to opposite field contact. Defensively, fluid footwork, momentum towards target, clean exchanges, high three-quarter release, 85 mph from the outfield, accurate throws. On the mound, Coleman has a slow and deliberate delivery, hands work in rhythm with stride leg, directional towards target, loose arm, high three-quarter release. Fastball is 82-83 mph, arm side run, feel for a changeup at 75-76 mph, arm side run, located at the bottom of the zone, curveball showed sharp bite, 66-68 mph, 12-to-6 shape, slider was more gradual at 69-71 mph.

WILL MOORE RHP / OF 
LADUE HORTON WATKINS, MO / 2023

Moore is a 6-foot-2, 171-pound, right-handed hitting outfielder and right-handed pitcher in Missouri’s 2023 class. He ran a 7.53 second 60 and posted an exit velocity of 80 mph. At that plate, Moore starts in an athletic stance, minimal load, quiet hands, in line stride, high finish with hands, primarily contact to both the middle and opposite fields during batting practice. Defensively, smooth actions to the baseball, clean transfers, long arm stroke, clean action, positional velo of 84 mph, mostly accurate with throws. On the mound, Moore has an athletic build, projectable frame, controlled leg lift, accelerates down the mound, repeats with some effort, loose arm, high three-quarter release. Fastball is 80-82 mph, will turnover his 2 seam with more run, thrown for strikes, curveball is 65-66 mph, 11-to-5 shape, flashes some depth, thrown for strikes, changeup 70-71 mph, occasional run.

PARKER DAVISOF / 1B
FORT ZUMWALT EAST, MO / 2022

Davis is a 6-foot, 165-pound, right-handed hitting outfield prospect out of Fort Zumwalt East. He ran a 7.50 second 60 and posted an exit velocity of 80 mph at the event. At the plate, Davis starts slightly crouched, simple load, in line stride, uphill path to this swing, balanced throughout swing, gap-to-gap approach during round. Defensively, aggressive to the baseball, smooth actions in the outfield, clean transfers, long arm stroke, positional velocity of 83 mph.

DANIEL FLIER OF / RHP
CBC, MO / 2022

Flier is a 6-foot-1, 175-pound, left-handed hitting outfielder and right-handed pitcher in Missouri’s 2022 class. At the event, he ran a 7.35 second 60 and posted an exit velocity of 88 mph. During batting practice, Flier has an athletic frame with room to grow, relaxed and balanced set up, quiet hands with load, in line stride, quick hands, controls the barrel, mostly hard pull side with some contact to the opposite field gap. Defensively, fluid actions, momentum towards target, clean arm action, high three-quarter release, 82 mph positional velo, mostly accurate throws. On the mound, Flier has a frame that projects, works at a slower tempo, controlled leg lift, accelerates down the mound, repeats with regular effort, downhill loose arm action, high three-quarter slot. Fastball is 79-84 mph, run, thrown for strikes, curveball is 71-75 mph, late action, 11-to-5 shape, around the zone, showed some feel for his changeup, 74-76 mph, arm side run. 

SAM GORDLEY OF / RHP 
WENTZVILLE LIBERTY, MO / 2022

Gordley is a 5-foot-10, 148-pound, outfield prospect and right-handed pitcher in Missouri’s 2022 class. He ran a 7.87 second 60 and posted an exit velocity of 79 mph. At the plate, Gordley is lean, long limbs, smooth load, leverages a firm from side, flat bat path throughout the zone, sprayed the ball to all fields during batting practice. Defensively, aggressive to the baseball, clean transfers, momentum towards target, positional velo of 82 mph, mostly accurate throws. On the mound, Gordley has a wirey frame, projectable with room to grow, delivery is directional towards home plate with some effort, creates good angle with an over the top release. Gordley shows a 3 pitch mix for strikes, fastball is 79-82 mph, tops at 83 mph, late action to his arm side, curveball is late with sharp bite, 12-to-6 shape, 64-67 mph, changeup is 76-78 mph.

RILEY CLANCYOF / LHP 
ST. JOHN VIANNEY, MO / 2021

Clancy is a big and physical 6-foot and 190-pound left-handed hitting outfielder from St. Louis’ Vianney HS. He graduates in their 2021 class. At the event, he ran a 7.07 second 60, which is consistent with previous events. During batting practice, Clancy starts in an athletic stance, smooth load with hands, in line stride, aggressive swing with a quick bat, showed hard contact throughout round and sprayed balls to all fields. Defensively in the outfield, attacks the baseball, clean exchanges, momentum towards target, positional velo of 78 mph, mostly accurate throws.

BRAYDEN RUBELLHP / OF 
FRANCIS HOWELL CENTRAL, MO / 2023

Rubel is a slender and athletic 6-foot, 165-pound, left-handed pitcher and outfielder in Missouri’s 2023 class. He ran a 7.53 second 60 and posted an exit velocity of 80 mph. At the plate, Rubel starts slightly open with hands resting on back shoulder, simple load with minimal hand movement, in line stride, aggressive with back hip, high finish with hands, during round primarily had contact to the middle and opposite fields. Defensively, clean exchanges, momentum towards target, positional velo of 78 mph with accurate throws. On the mound, Rubel shows a three pitch mix for strikes, high leg kick, high glove side for added deception, crossfire delivery with stride making it tough for LHH to pick up the baseball, consistently works downhill, accelerates down the mound, three-quarter release. Fastball is 73-76 mph with some arm side run, curveball is 65-69 mph, 1-to-7 shape, mostly gradual action, showed some feel for his changeup at 68-69 mph, fading action, occasional sink. 

JACOB MCFARLANDOF / 1B 
TIMBERLAND , MO / 2022

McFarland is a long and lean 6-foot-1, 145-pound, right-handed hitting outfielder in Missouri’s 2022 class. At the event he showed some foot speed for his size and ran a 7.12 second 60. At the plate, McFarland shows a projectable frame with room to grow, long limbs, starts in an upright stance, leg lift into load, slightly open stride, some feel for the barrel, during batting practice showed contact primarily to the middle of the field with occasional lift. In the outfield, attacks the baseball, clean transfers, works lower to the ground, over the top release, positional velo of 78 mph, fairly accurate with throws.

HUNTER PETHANOF / OF 
BOONVILLE, MO / 2021

Pethan is a 5-foot-8, 160-pound, outfield prospect in Missouri’s 2021 class out of Boonville HS. At the event he ran a 6.90 second 60. At the plate, recorded an exit velocity of 82 mph, starts a little wider with his lower half, in line stride, flat bat path, during batting practice Pethan showed fly ball contact to center and opposite field. Defensively, attacks the baseball, clean transfers, positional velo of 76 mph, mostly accurate throws. 

CARTER SMITHLHP / OF 
FORT ZUMWALT WEST, MO / 2022

Smith is a 5-foot-9, 145-pound, left-handed pitcher and outfielder in Missouri’s 2022 class. He ran a 7.46 second 60 and posted an exit velocity of 82 mph. At the plate, Smith starts with a slightly open stance, simple load, in line stride, showed hard contact during round. Defensively in the outfield, attacks the baseball, clean transfers, momentum towards target. Fastball plays well between 73-76 mph, occasional run, curveball is 60-63 mph, sharp bite at times, 1-to-7 shape, changeup is 60-63 mph, some are side run.  

JACKSON COURTNEYOF / 3B 
BELLEVILLE WEST, IL / 2023

Courtney is a 5-foot-2, 130-pound, right-handed hitting outfielder in Illinois's 2023 class. He ran a 7.32 second 60 and posted an exit velocity of 73 mph. At the plate, Courtney starts in a relaxed and upright position, simple load, quiet hands, remains balanced throughout, showed middle and opposite field contact during round. Defensively, Courtney attacks the baseball, long arm stroke, clean arm action, positional velo of 76 mph with accurate throws.
