PLAINFIELD, IL – No. 11 Plainfield North squared off with crosstown foe Plainfield South on Tuesday. Both teams sent their senior ace to the mound and it lived up to the billing. North’s Kyle Strepek (Illinois-Springfield commit) and South’s Shane Ritter (Iowa commit) matched goose eggs through regulation, but it took extras for the North Tigers to get a walk-off single from Zach Jarosz and a 1-0 win.
Strepek worked eight innings striking out six and scattering five hits. The southpaw senior worked quickly with a low 80’s fastball and sweeping breaking ball that hat the Cougar hitters off balance all day.
It looked like South had North on the ropes in the ninth when the Tigers went to the bullpen. Marco Escobar was hit by a pitch to lead off the ninth. Then on a hit and run, Marco Melgoza shot a single to right where North right fielder Josh Garner (more known for is upper 80’s fastball) gunned down Escobar at third, negating what would be a 1st and 3rd situation with nobody out. North relief pitcher Adam Zuk then settled in to get the remaining two outs with a Konnor Ash singled sandwiched between.
South’s RHP Shane Ritter was nearly unhittable over nine innings pitched. The Iowa commit struck out six allowing only three hits and just one runner to reach second base. Ritter’s running fastball sat in the upper 80’s most of his outing and induced 14 groundball outs to just three flyouts.
South went to the bullpen in the tenth. Matt Babuskow led it off with a jam shot single to center, two base on balls later and the bases were loaded with nobody out. With an inevitable outcome, it was just a matter of who the hero would be for the Tigers. Zach Jarosz wasted no time and laced a clean single to right past a drawn in infield picking up the walk-off win in the tenth.
