NEW LENOX, IL – No. 6 Providence Catholic staved off Lincoln-Way West 5-4, advancing to the championship game of the WJOL/Don Ladas Memorial Tournament, which we be played Saturday evening.

Lincoln-Way West (3-3-1) trailed 5-3 entering the top of the seventh inning. With two outs, Mike Majcher scored from third on a groundball that got by the Providence Catholic third baseman. The error cut the lead to 5-4 and put the tying run on second base and go-ahead run on first. RHP Dakota Kotowski was able shut the door however, by inducing a fly ball to Gaoshua Williams, the Providence Catholic center fielder, which ended the comeback bid.

Providence Catholic (4-1) held a four-run lead heading to the fifth inning before Lincoln-Way West made things interesting, scoring the final three runs of the game. The Warriors got one run back in the fifth on a sacrifice fly from Vinny Schroeder and scored two more runs in the sixth. Connor Lowman scored Kevin Davis on a groundout to second base and Noah Hibler, a Webster commit, brought in Jimmy Helfrich on a single to right field.

Providence Catholic did all of their damage in the first five innings. The Celtics scored one in the first, two in the fourth and two more in the fifth. Senior outfielder Drew Hunniford, a Saint Xavier commit, delivered the big blow in the fourth, a two out, two-run double to left center field. Second baseman Ryan Kaup added a run scoring single in the fifth and later scored on a bases loaded walk to Hunniford. Gaoshua Williams, a Central Michigan recruit, reached base safely four times, scored two runs and stole two bases for the Celtics.

Sophomore right-handed pitcher Bryce Barnett, an Arizona State commit, got the start on the mound for Providence Catholic. Barnett worked 84-86 mph for much of his start and allowed one earned run in his four-plus innings of work. Barnett, who got the win, scattered two hits, struck out two and walked three.

With the win Providence Catholic moves on to the championship game tonight against Plainfield Central. The game time is slated for 7:30 pm at Silver Cross Field in Joliet.
