No.1 St. Rita stays perfect, blows out No.18 Providence

CHICAGO, IL – On a sunny yet windy day in the Catholic League Blue, No. 1 St. Rita took full advantage of the offensive winds. The Mustangs made short work of the state’s No. 1 prospect, RHP Jake Godfrey, as they launched five homeruns pounding No. 18 Providence 14-1.

In an anticipated outing of one of the top draft prospects in the state against Illinois’ top ranked team, the scouts didn’t have to stay long on Saturday as St. Rita (25-0) struck early and often on the LSU-bound Godfrey. Godfrey only lasted an inning and a third surrendering nine runs on six hits, four of which left the park.

Senior Jake Shepski (Notre Dame, 2014) and junior Tyler Halas (Tennessee, 2015) got things started with back to back RBI singles in the first. Then senior first baseman Nick Goldsmith delivered the big blow with a three-run shot to left. Three batters later senior second baseman Chris Delgadillo delivered a solo blast of his own to give the Mustangs a quick 6-0 lead after one.

The St. Rita offense wasn’t done with Godfrey just yet. Two batters in to the second, junior Shane Peisker delivered a two-run blast to right. Then Tyler Halas delivered the knock-out punch with a no-doubter to left center, chasing Godfrey form the game.

Xavier commit, Nate Soria capped off the five run second with a two-run homer of his own. The St. Rita offense finished with 12 hits in 24 at bats including five homeruns and a double.

Providence (15-8) never could muster an answer for the Mustang offense as winning pitcher Tyler Halas kept the ball on the ground and in the park. Halas finished with four strikeouts and six groundball outs in his four innings of work. Jake Shepski pitched the final inning and posted two strikeouts.

The win keeps St. Rita perfect at 25-0 on the season, riding the momentum into Monday’s much anticipated contest at Catholic League Blue foe, No. 8 St. Laurence.
