PBR Illinois Player Of The Week: C Matt McCormick

By Andy Sroka

Matt McCormick (West Virginia) incinerated box scores all week long during his team’s trip to Tucson, Arizona. St. Laurence was working on defending its Chris Moon Memorial Tournament title when McCormick took matters into his own hands at the plate and is our PBR Illinois Player of the Week as a result.

The West Virginia-bound catcher drove in an unfathomable 19 runs last week and homered in three straight games, capped by a two-homer game on Thursday against Rio Rico High School (AZ). McCormick slugged the Vikings to a successful defense of their tournament crown by going 12-for-16 with four home runs, three doubles, and a triple, and tallied almost 20 RBIs over a four-game span.

We recently updated our Illinois class of 2019 rankings and McCormick remained near the top, currently ranked No. 4 in Illinois and is the top-ranked catcher. He is arguably the best pure hitter in the class.

For his efforts, McCormick has been named the PBR Player of the Week for the week of March 26 through April 1.

Stay tuned for our Weekly Diamond Notes that will be published this Friday. There we’ll take a look at players who narrowly missed out on a Player of the Week honor but deserve some recognition nonetheless.
