ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, IL- Not often is your starting catcher your 3-hitter and closer, unless you are Florida State circa 2008. Well on Monday Sam Ferri did his best Buster Posey impression in the Dons 7-0 victory over Hersey on a frigid afternoon. Ferri commanded the pitching staff for 5 innings, went 3-4 at the plate, and closed out the victory on the mound. The Arizona State recruit impressed most on the mound working one inning and striking out two. His fastball sat in the 88-91 mph range for his one inning of work complimented by a hard slider at 80 mph.

Notre Dame pounded out 10 hits in the first six innings but only had 2 runs to show for it thanks to botched 1st and 3rd play and a sacrifice fly by Joe Rimac. In the top of the 7th the Dons sent 10 men to the plate scoring 5 times to take a 7-0 lead, highlighted by a 2-run single by Ian Steigerwald scoring Matthew Segovia and David Wendel.

Scott Kutschke got the start for Notre Dame working 3 innings and facing one over the minimum after a 1-out single was erased by a double play in the 2nd inning. After Kutschke stranded a runner on third to end the 3rd inning, Adnan Sator, Brandon Nowak, along with Ferri combined to allow a hit and two walks as no Hersey runner managed to get past first base the rest of the way.

Tom Norton, Sam Ferri, and Matthew Segovia combined to go 9-13 with 3 runs scored.

No. 10 Notre Dame improved to 5-1 on the year and will return to action tomorrow against Maine South in Niles. Hersey drops to 1-4 on the season and returns to action on Thursday at home against St. Viator.

More in-depth player notes will be posted in the Illinois Scout Blog later.
