Team Easton Scout Day: Blast Motion Board

By: Diego Solares
Staff Writer, Associate Scout

On Tuesday, October 5, the PBR Illinois staff traveled to Glen Ellyn, Illinois, to host the Team Easton Scout Day at the College of DuPage. This event gave our staff an opportunity to get an up close look at roughly 40+ prospects from the Team Easton travel program, representing the 2022-to-2025 graduating classes.

Earlier today we published a Statistical Analysis, bringing you a quick statistical analysis of those that participated in the event, as well as a quick nugget on which players stood out. We then started to dive deeper into the data, looking at the pitch metrics and batted ball numbers from this event inside our TrackMan Files piece.

Now we'll continue to roll out the data we gathered from this event by taking a look at the swing metrics collected during batting practice thanks to our Blast Motion sensors. Below we'll highlight which players from this event stood out amongst their peers from a swing metrics standpoint.

Hand Speed (Peak & Average)

Rank Name State School Class Pos Hand Speed (max)
1 Dimitri Spatharakis IL Lemont 2022 OF 24.8 mph
2 Max Pavlik IL Hinsdale Central 2023 3B 23.9 mph
3 Patrick Kulaga IL Naperville Central 2023 C 23.7 mph
4 Rocco Tenuta IL St. Francis 2023 SS 23.5 mph
^ Drake Brown IL Naperville North 2024 3B 23.5 mph
5 Andrew Trantina IL Lyons Township 2024 3B 23.4 mph

Rank Name State School Class Pos Hand Speed (avg)
1 Patrick Kulaga IL Naperville Central 2023 C 23.0 mph
2 Dimitri Spatharakis IL Lemont 2022 OF 22.5 mph
3 Drake Brown IL Naperville North 2024 3B 22.3 mph
4 Rocco Tenuta IL St. Francis 2023 SS 22.1 mph

Peak Hand Speed: The observed maximum speed as measured on the handle of the bat (measured six inches from the knob of the bat). Peak Hand Speed will occur prior to the moment of impact, very close to the commit time in the swing when the wrists unhinge.

Bat Speed (Average)

Rank Name State School Class Pos Bat Speed (avg)
1 Max Pavlik IL Hinsdale Central 2023 3B 71.9 mph
2 Aayush Modi IL Naperville North 2024 1B 71.6 mph
3 Dimitri Spatharakis IL Lemont 2022 OF 70.7 mph
4 Andrew Trantina IL Lyons Township 2024 3B 70.5 mph

Bat Speed: The observed speed of the sweet spot of the bat at impact. The sweet spot of the bat is measured six inches from the tip of the bat.

Rotational Acceleration (Peak & Average)

Rank Name State School Class Pos Rot. Acc (max)
1 Christopher Rowe IL Naperville North 2023 OF 26.9 g
2 Rocco Tenuta IL St. Francis 2023 SS 26.4 g
3 Timothy O'Connell IL St. Rita 2023 SS 25.8 g
4 Alex Spatharakis IL Lemont 2025 SS 22.9 g
^ Drake Brown IL Naperville North 2024 3B 22.9 g
5 Ryder Johnson IL St. Rita of Cascia 2023 OF 21.0 g

Rank Name State School Class Pos Rot. Acc (avg)
1 Christopher Rowe IL Naperville North 2023 OF 22.2 g
2 Rocco Tenuta IL St. Francis 2023 SS 21.7 g

Body Rotation: A swing that has the appropriate relative contributions of body and bat rotations is an efficient and Powerful swing that maintains proper sequencing. An efficient baseball swing is one in which the body creates the initial movements, which is then transferred to the arms and out to the bat, thereby maximizing Bat Speed through this proximal-to-distal kinematic sequencing movement pattern.
