Nonconference

No. 1 St. Laurence (11-0) received a battle from highly-ranked Gainesville Florida’s PK Young High School (16-4), as Illinois’  best defeated Young 2-1 in Burbank on Tuesday.

Viking senior SS Mike Rotkvich doubled home the first Viking run in the bottom of the fourth and scored on sophomore Brad Wood’s RBI single for a 2-0 lead. Viking junior RHP Kyle Esland (1-0) scattered seven hits and held the Floridians to one run in five innings to pick up the win on the mound.

On Wednesday, the Vikings will travel to River Forest for a Catholic League Crossover battle with Fenwick (7-1, 1-1 White) at 4:30. The game can be seen LIVE at 4:30 on:

Whenever No. 3 New Trier (3-1) and Loyola (2-9) meet in the annual “North Shore War” you can use the old cliché that you can throw out the records. Once again this fact was evident as Loyola stunned the Trevians 3-2 on Tuesday. Rambler junior Danny Rafferty singled home the game-winner as the Ramblers stunned the Trevians 3-2 in Glenview on Tuesday. Rambler starting and winning pitcher Mike Madigan baffled the Trevians as Madigan fired a two-hitter.

No. 7 Providence Catholic (8-3) was stunned by Naperville Central (5-3) and ace RHP Ian Lewandowski (2-0), who fired a five-hit shutout at the Celtics as the Redhawks prevailed 1-0 on Tuesday. Providence’s University of Notre Dame-bound Mike Hearne matched Lewandowski with six shutout innings before being relieved by Celtic senior Cristian Ochoa (0-1) to start the Redhawk seventh. Lewandowski led off the inning with a single and the Redhawks won the game on a Providence miscue, sending the large Naperville Central contingent home happy.

No. 8 Andrew (7-2) got stung by Lincoln-Way East 6-2. L-W East’s (5-3) senior Evan Bloomfield drove home three for the victorious Griffins. On Wednesday, the PBR’s Executive Director Sean Duncan will be in Tinley Park where the T-Bolts will host No. 11 Joliet Catholic (4-3) at 4:30.

No. 13 Simeon (9-2) took a long bus ride down I-57 to Harrisburg and defeated Harrisburg 2-0. Sophomore Darius Day (4-0) baffled the Bulldog hitters as the No. 1 sophomore in the State of Illinois fired a five-hit shutout at the Bulldogs. The Wolverines junior trio of Louisville-bound SS Corey Ray (3B, R), Ro Coleman (2-for-3, R) and Elbert Dunnigan (1-for-3, RBI) led the Wolverine attack. Harrisburg falls to 8-3-1.  

No. 13 Simeon will battle with No. 19 Benton (11-1) at Benton City Park at 10 a.m.

No. 21 Carmel (6-2) got ambushed in Cary on Tuesday by Cary-Grove 12-3.

C-G (5-6) received a route-going performance from Trojan starting pitcher Ryan Kaveny (3-0) who struck out 11 in his masterpiece on Tuesday.

No. 22 Lincoln-Way North (6-2) crushed Joliet West 15-0 in five innings in Southwest Suburban Conference crossover on Tuesday. Phoenix senior RHP Alex Lesiak (1-0) struck out seven and fired a five-inning no-hitter at the Steelmen. Phoenix junior Josh Reid plated a pair for the Phoenix.

No. 23 Niles West (9-1) smashed Von Steuben 6-1 behind a one-hitter from Wolves starting pitcher Jason Meger (2-1). Meger fanned eight. 

Brother Rice (7-2) defeated Wheaton Warrenville South 4-1 behind Crusader starting pitcher Kyle Bernaciak, who allowed no runs in his five innings of work and struck out four Tigers to pick up the win. Crusader senior Dom Albanese plated a pair for the Crusaders.

Maine South (5-3) was led by its senior battery of LHP Pat Aloisio (3-0) and Iowa-bound C Jimmy Frankos on Tuesday as the Hawks beat Notre Dame 4-2. Aloisio fired a five-hitter at the Dons and Frankos plated a pair of Hawk runs.

Sandburg (4-2-1) crushed Thornwood 15-2 in a Southwest Suburban crossover on Tuesday.

Huntley (5-4) defeated Glenbard East 6-0 behind a three-hitter from Red Raider senior RHP Craig Klein (2-1). Junior Bryce Only had a pair of hits and drove home a Red Raider run.

Lockport (5-4) defeated Bradley-Bourbonnais 6-1 in a Southwest Suburban crossover on Tuesday. Porter junior Ron Sessler led the Porter onslaught with three hits and three RBI. Porter senior Dave Matthews picked up the win on the mound for Lockport.

Homewood Flossmoor (5-2) blasted Thornton 14-0 in five innings in a Southwest Suburban Conference crossover on Tuesday. Viking junior Ethan Chamberlain was prfect with two doubles and a home run and drove home four Viking runs.

Sandburg (4-2-1) crushed Thornwood 10-0 in a five-inning Southwest Suburban crossover on Tuesday. Eagle junior David Cronin plated three runs for Sandburg.

Gordon Tech (11-1), the Catholic White co-leaders, beat up on Maine East 11-1 in five innings on Tuesday. Ram senior Mike Malave (1-0) picked up the win on the mound with a solid 4 2/3 innings of scoreless baseball.

Normal West (9-3) defeated Springfield 6-2 on Tuesday behind 6-foot-2 245 pound junior Josh Appel (1-0) allowed one run and three hits in his solid six-inning season opeing performance. University of Illinois-recruit junior Matthew James had a 1-2-3 7th to finish the game.

James added two hits at the plate. Junior C Adam McGinnis had two hits and two RBI to lead the Wildcats.

Crystal Lake South (7-4) blasted Hoffman Estates 8-3, behind Indiana State-bound Nick Martin. Martin had pair of hits and drove home three Gator runs. Gator junior 1B Max Meitzler continued his torrid hitting with three more hits and an RBI. Gator junior starting pitcher Tyler Hall (1-1) allowed three hits and three runs in his solid six-inning start.

Herscher (11-3) blasted Beecher 11-0 in five innings. Tiger senior Matt Webber improved to 2-1 on the mound with a two-hit shutout. Tiger Brandon Muhlstadt had a pair of hits, including a double and plated a pair of Tiger runs.

Metro Suburban

Glenbard South (6-3; 1-0) prevailed in the Raiders’ MSC opener by defeating Riverside-Brookfield 5-3. Eastern Illinois-bound Mitch Gasbarro fired a complete game on the mound for the Raiders and drove in a pair of runs.

North Suburban Lake

No. 16 Mundelein (11-2; 1-0) blanked Lake Forest 6-0 behind Mustang Jared Mandel’s 6 1/3 shutout innings on Tuesday.

Lake Zurich (9-2; 1-0) defeated Warren 5-2 behind a two-hitter from Purdue-bound RHP Mike Lutz (3-0). Lutz fanned a dozen Blue Devils. John Orlando had a huge two-run single to give the Bears a 4-2 lead they would not relinquish.

Stevenson (4-3; 1-0) defeated Zion Benton 9-1 behind Patriot starting pitcher Matt Allen, who threw five shutout innings at the Z-B’s

South Suburban Blue

Bremen (10-5; 2-0) slammed Hillcrest 13-0 in five innings on Tuesday. Brave junior Jesse Vasquez (2-0) fired four scoreless innings to pick up the win on the mound for Bremen. Senior Niko Garafalo singled, homered and drove home a pair for the SSC-Blue leaders.

Lemont (5-4; 1-1) bounced back from its loss to No. 20 Oak Forest (5-2; 1-1) on Monday  with a resounding 9-4 triumph at home in Lemont on Tuesday. Indian sophomore C Mike Papierski led the Lemont attack with two hits and two RBI.

South Suburban Red

Reavis (5-6; 3-0) crushed Argo 15-1 in five innings as ram senior David Beltran had a perfect 3-for-3 day at the plate with a triple and four RBI.

Oak Lawn (6-4; 2-0) defeated Shepard again 9-4 on Tuesday. Spartan senior pinch-hitter Dan Townsend had the big blow for the Spartans with a bases-clearing triple. Sophomore Matt Dunne had two hits and drove home three Spartan runs. Senior Brian Barnhouse had two hits and two RBI and senior Cody Marek had a perfect 2-for-2 day with an RBI.

Evergreen Park (4-5; 2-0) smashed Eisenhower 14-0 in five innings. Mustang senior Mike Reuter had three hits and plated a pair. Mustang Jack Ryan had a perfect day with three hits and three RBI for EP.

Defending SSC-Red champions Richards (5-5; 1-0) opened defense of the Bulldogs 2011 SSC-Red crown with a resounding 15-5 crossover victory over TF South. Bulldog junior 2B Jimmy Wujcik had three hits and three RBI to lead the ‘Dogs. Bulldog senior Chris Elliot chipped in with two hits and three RBI.

S. Illinois River-River-Mississippi

Nashville (11-0; 2-0) defeated Carterville 5-4 on Tuesday. Hornet freshman Dylan Mueller singled doubled and tripled and plated four RBI to lead the Nashville attack.

Anna-Jonesboro (7-2; 2-0) kept pace with Nashville with a 4-3 win over Pinckneyville on Tuesday.

S. Illinois River-River Ohio

No. 19 Benton (11-1; 2-0) defeated Murphysboro 9-4. After spotting the Red Devils a 3-0 lead the Rangers exploded for two in the third, three in the fourth and a game-clinching four-spot in the sixth.

Bradley-bound Ty Leffler hammered his 10th homer of the season and drove home four more runs. Trey Garrett went deep for the third time this season and drove in two runs and freshman Gus Gibbs hit his first dinger of ’12. Garrett threw a seven-hitter to improve to 3-0 on the mound.  

South Seven

No. 18 Mount Vernon (11-2; 2-0) shutout Marion 2-0. Ram 6-foot-4 sophomore Brock Fulkerson (3-1), fired a four-hit shutout at Marion. Senior Zane Xanders and junior Matt Williams drove home the two Ram runs.

Southwest Prairie

No. 5 Plainfield North (5-1; 0-1) went down meekly to Oswego (6-3; 1-0) and senior RHP Parker Meek on Tuesday. Meek fired a one-hitter with 8 strikeouts at Jackie’s Field of Dreams’ on Tuesday.

No. 6 Minooka (7-3; 1-0) defeated Plainfield East 6-2 on Tuesday.

Plainfield South (5-3; 1-0) fired the first missile in the huge opening SWPC  three-game series with archrival Plainfield Central (6-3-1; 0-1) on Tuesday. South edged Central 3-2 in 11 thrilling innings. South junior Matt Cranley scored the game-winner in the top of the 11th on a Central miscue.

Cougar junior Joe Dux picked up the win in relief and Cougar closer Mike Crowl nailed down the save. The two clubs will meet at South on Wednesday.

Oswego East (3-4; 1-0) blanked Romeoville 6-0 behind Auburn University-bound Matt Schultz (3-0). The future Tiger struck out 10 in his five scoreless innings of work. Wolves’ closer Matt Miller no-hit the Spartans over the last two innings to complete the combined no-no. It was the first no-hitter in Oswego East baseball history.

Southwestern

No. 14 Alton (8-1; 3-0) defeated Collinsville 7-3 to remain atop the Southwestern Conference standings.

No. 15 Edwardsville (7-1; 2-1) smashed Belleville East 9-1 on Tuesday. Tiger senior starting pitcher Alex Reish (1-0) allowed one run and three hits in his solid six-innings of work. Tiger 2B Jake Fisher had a 3-for-3 day at the plate with four RBI to lead the Tiger attack.

Suburban Christian Blue

Marmion (6-4; 2-0) completed its sweep of Chicago Christian 5-4 in eight exciting innings in Aurora on Tuesday. The Cadets rallied for two runs all after two out in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at 4-4. In the bottom of the eighth, Cadet senior Mike Pipp singled home the game-winner for the Cadets.

Upstate 8 Crossovers

South Elgin (4-1; 1-0 Valley) blanked Larkin 6-0 in the Storm’s U8C opener on Tuesday. Storm junior David Palmer (2-1) allowed one hit over six innings to pick up the win on the mound for the Storm. Palmer fanned 10 Royal hitters. Storm senior Ryan Ford led the Storm attack with a perfect 2-for-2 day with a pair of RBI. 

Neuqua Valley (5-3; 1-0 Valley) and University of Illinois-bound RHP Nick Blackburn beat St. Charles East 1-0. Blackburn (3-1) fired a three-hit shutout at the Fighting Saints.

West Suburban Gold

Hinsdale South (6-2; 2-1) outslugged Willowbrook 10-8 behind senior 1B Mitch Duckhorn and senior and Illinois State University bound Sean Beasley. Duckhorn went deep for the Hornets. Beasley (3-0) picked up the win on the mound fro the Hornets.

Downers Grove South (6-3; 2-1) won its rubber-match with Leyden 6-3 behind junior RHP Zach Burdi (1-1). The West Suburban Conference contenders meet in a huge twin-bill in Darien on Saturday morning at 10. The PBR’s Drake Skleba hopes to be in Darien for this WSC Gold showdown.
