Carmel LHP Alex Young commits, and other news



Alex Young, a LHP/OF who’s currently ranked No. 11 in the Class of 2012, has committed to Texas Christian University. The 6-foot-3, 190-pound Young first burst onto the scene last February when he earned top prospect at the loaded Prep Baseball Report Preseason All-State Showcase. At the event, came from a ¾ arm slot with a clean arm action and a fastball that sat 87-88 mph with late arm-side run. He displayed a dynamic core and lower half to go with good rhythm and tempo throughout his mechanics. Beyond his fastball, Young really impressed with his secondary pitches. His 76-78 mph changeup had late downward action. His curveball also projects to be a plus pitch at the next level; it demonstrated tight, late, hard break.

Although Young didn’t see much action on the mound as a junior, he nevertheless proved that he can play the outfield at the next level as well. The left-handed hitter has quick hands and power potential at the plate, in addition to a plus arm from the outfield. At the PBR Top Prospect Showcase in June, he ran a 7.02 60.

In other recruiting news, Aaron Kuper, a 6-foot-3, 205-pound C from Highland HS, has committed to Danville Area Community College. Kuper is a physically impressive catcher who possesses considerable raw ability. Defensively, he has a strong arm (81 mph from the crouch), and delivered a top pop time of 2.01. At the plate, Kuper displayed bat speed and used his strong lower half to flash some pull-side power potential. As a junior, he tallied 9 doubles and 24 RBI last spring.
