July 6, 2011
Brett Lilek, who?s the No. 1-ranked prospect in the Class of 2012, has committed to Arizona State University. Lilek, a 6-foot-3, 190-pound LHP from Marian Catholic HS, has been the top-ranked prospect in the class since early in his sophomore year.
At the Area Code tryouts last week, Lilek showed why he was one of the nation?s most coveted left-handers when he flashed a 90-93 mph fastball to go along with an 80-82 mph slider during his bullpen session.
In other news, Nick Bates, a Class of 2011 RHP from Sandburg HS, has committed to St. Louis University. The 5-foot-11, 185-pound Bates emerged in the spring as a top-level right-handed pitcher. At the Prep Baseball Report Top Prospect Showcase on June 16, Bates impressed with his 87-89 mph fastball, and ability to throw three quality pitches.
