2020 Recruiting Class Breakdown: Ball State

The NCAA's early signing period is wrapping up this week. In the coming days we are recapping the 2020 high school recruiting classes for each D1 school in Indiana with in-state recruits. Here we look at Ball State.

Coach Maloney and staff are bringing in three prospects ranked in Indiana's Top 50, including right-handed pitcher Ty Johnson (Lawrence North HS) who is ranked No. 4 overall in Indiana. Johnson is one of those "late bloomers" headed to Muncie next year. The 6-foot-6, 195 pounder is one of the biggest risers we've seen of late. Last February he was 80-84 with his fastball at the Preseason All-State with a slow breaking ball at 62-65. When we saw him again in the spring he had increased his fastball velocity to 85-89 and was 69-71 with his breaking ball. By the time the fall season ended, Johnson had solidified himself as a legitimate draft prospect with a consistent 88-91 mph fastball and a 73-75 mph breaking ball with true depth and swing and miss potential. Aiden Hinds (Delta HS) is a 6-foot-1, 170 pound athletic defender with arm strength (91 across the infield) and speed (6.95-60). His swing continues to progress with his added strength and athleticism. Sam Klein (Bloomington North HS) is a projectable 6-foot-4, 185 pound RHP with above average arm speed and a fastball currently reaching the mid-80's with more in the tank. Klein currently throws two breaking balls; a 70-74 mph CB with depth and a 78-79 mph SL with tight spin.

Scouting Report
Johnson continued to increase his draft stock with an impressive outing for Team Indiana. Long, lean projectable pitchers frame at 6-foot-6, 195 pounds. The right-hander was 88-91 with life on his fastball. Works predominantly from the stretch. High 3/4 arm action with above average arm speed, shorter arm stroke; easy effort in the delivery. Breaking ball has developed into a potential swing and miss pitch at the next level; 12/6 shape with depth at 73-75; a much improved pitch from when we saw him earlier in the year. 3IP, 6K, 3H, 1R, 2BB.
