Coastal Plains League All-Star Game- Prospect Report

Matt Payne
Assistant Scout, PBR of North Carolina

The Coastal Plains League (CPL) held its 20th All-Star game on July 9th at Lexington County Baseball Stadium in Lexington, SC.  The league features college players from across the country playing a 52 game schedule between late May and early August. The league map now includes teams in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia.

For the All-Star game, players were divided into teams with the National All-Stars made up of the South and West divisions and the American All-Stars coming from the North and East divisions.  The National All-Stars took the win, 9-4 over the American All-Stars, in a game that featured a 4 run first for the Nationals. After building a 9-2 lead, the Nationals would give up two more runs in the 5th before the pitching and defense took over, throwing zeros on the board for the final 4 innings of play.

The path to the 2019 MLB Draft has begun for many prospects.  Several players from the CPL All-Star game will be followed throughout the summer and into next spring.  Kenny Wells (RHP, Seton Hill University) jumped onto the stage with a big outing versus Team USA in an exhibition earlier in the summer.  The closer got the start as the top vote getter for the event and did not disappoint with his stuff. Below are player reports on several prospects as we continue to move forward.

CPL All-Star Game Player Analysis
