Top Unsigned Prospect Showcase: Catchers Analysis

On Sunday, October 30, Prep Baseball Report Kansas/Missouri held the Top Unsigned Prospect Showcase at Hoover Field in Wichita, Kansas.  Nearly 50 players from the 2018 and 2017 classes participated. 

Player profiles have been updated with profile pictures, velos, running times and video.  College recruiters can now update their ScoutPlus dashboard accordingly.  We will take an in-depth look at the catchers from event today.  A group of talented payers, six with pop times below 2.05, and five with a positional velo of 73 mph or higher.

KANSAS CATCHERS

Chase Broeker, C, Leavenworth (KS), 2018
Broeker is a strong 6-foot-1 200-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 208 class.  He ran a 7.68 60 and a 4.75 home to first.  He has an 85 mph positional velo. At the plate, balanced set up, short and efficient stride, in line, loose hands with quick bat speed, hard pull side line drives during batting practice. Behind the plate, pop times between 2.01 and 2.13-seconds, one of the top pop times for the event, 75 mph positional velo,  one of the top catchers velos of the event, quick actions, over the top release, feet in sync with hands, momentum through the catch, accurate thrower.

Connor Ellefson, C, Blue Valley Northwest (KS), 2017
Ellefson is a 6-foot-1 195-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2017 class.  He ran a 7.32 60 and a 4.52 home to first.  He has a 93 mph exit velo, one of the top RHH exit velos at the event. At the plate, thin and open stance, hands load during in line stride, aggressive and quick swing, consistent hard middle of the cage contact during batting practice.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.03 and 2.12-seconds, one of the top pop times of the event, 74 mph positional velo, one of the top catchers pop times of the event, quick and high exchange, over the top release, throws have carry, feet work with hands, soft hands, mostly accurate throws with carry.

Connor Hughes, C, Olathe North (KS), 2017
Hughes is a durable 5-foot-11 185-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2017 class. He ran a 7.59 60 and 4.78 home to first.  He has an 89 mph exit velo. At the plate, balanced stance, smooth load into back side, short stride, aggressive swing, takes a hack, pull side power with mostly pull side contact during batting practice, quick bat speed.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.05 and 2.27-seconds, 68 mph positional velo, clean and consistent, high exchange with over the to release, momentum though the catch, mostly accurate throws.

Griffin Larsen, C, Shawnee Mission South (KS), 2018
Larsen is a 5-foot-10 185-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2018 class.  He ran a 7.36 60 and a 4.45 home-to-first.  He has an 88 mph exit velo. At the plate, thin set up, controlled load, in line stride, loose and quick hands, swing produced middle to pull side line drives during batting practice, flashed power and strength.  Behind the plate, pop times between 1.94 and 2.07-seconds, top pop time of the event, 76 mph positional velo, top catchers velo of the event, quick actions, clean exchange, compact stance to receive, momentum through the catch, throws flashed carry, mostly accurate.

Mitchell Light, C, Pittsburg (KS), 2018
Light is a 5-foot-10 175-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2018 class.  He ran a 7.58 60 and a 4.38 home to first.  He has a 74 mph exit velo. At the plate, open stance, slightly open stride, has bat control and feel for the barrel, gap-to-gap approach.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.12 and 2.33-seconds, 67 mph positional velo, sits low to receive, clean transfer with high exchange, fluid footwork, accurate throws.

Caleb Ostronic, C, Eudora (KS), 2018
Ostronic is a 6-foot-1 185-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2018 class.  He ran a 8.33 60 and a 4.90 home to first.  He has an 80 mph exit velo. At the plate, athletic stance, short stride, smooth load with little hand movement, swing produced middle to opposite field line drives.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.23 and 2.38-seconds, 68 mph positional velo, over the top release, long arm circle, momentum through the catch, fluid footwork, mostly accurate throws.

Colten Richardson, C, Valley Center (KS), 2018
Richardson is a 5-foot-9 155-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2018 class.  He ran a 7.57 60 and a 4.41 home-to-first.  He has a 75 mph exit velo. At the plate, balanced stance, minimal stride with smooth load, level through the zone, gap-to-gap approach.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.11 and 2.21-seconds, 73 mph positional velo, one of the top catchers velos for the event, loose over the top arm slot, compact set up, quick exchange, works in sync with feet, fluid footwork, mostly accurate throws. 

Kreighton Rogers, C, Campus (KS), 2017
Rogers is a 5-foot-10 180-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2017 class.  He ran a 7.79 60 and a 4.65 home-to-first.  He has an 80 mph exit velo. At the plate, open stance, controlled leg kick, power to the pull side, showed ability to go other way, quick bat speed, aggressive.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.12 and 2.28-seconds, 72 mph positional velo, athletic actions, loose and quick over the top release, sits low, high exchange, quick feet, accurate throws with carry.

Dawson Sramek, C, Maize (KS), 2017
Sramek is a 5-foot-10 160-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2017 class.  He ran a 6.92 60 , one of the top times of the event, and a 4.25 home-to-first, one of the top times among RHH.  He has an 84 mph exit velo. At the plate, balanced set up, in line stance with short in line stride, minimal hand load with smooth rhythm, level path, middle of the cage contact during batting practice.  Behind the plate, 2.12 to 2.22-seconds pop times, 71 mph positional velo, high three quarters release, quick release, fluid footwork, momentum through the catch, moves well to block, mostly accurate throws.

Cooper Turpin, C, Salina Sacred Heart (KS), 2018
Turpin is a 6-foot-1 145-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2018 class.  He ran a 7.57 60 and a 4.62 home-to-first.  H e has an 80 mph exit velo. At the plate, slightly open stance, hands walk away from stride, level path through zone, loose hands, consistent middle of the cage contact.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.00 and 2.15-seconds, one of the top pop times of the event, 73 mph positional velo, one of the top catchers velos for the event, high three quarters arm slot, quick feet in sync with quick catch and throw, somewhat accurate throws, some throws flashing carry.

MISSOURI CATCHERS

Brett Baker, C, Blue Springs South (MO), 2018
Baker is a 5-foot-11 172-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2018 class.  He ran a 8.03 60 and a 4.88 home to first.  He has an exit velo of 81 mph. At the plate, starts slightly open, early stride to toe touch, swing produced line drives to the middle and pull side of cage in batting practice, hands dominate swing, level through the zone.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.12 and 2.30-seconds, 69 mph positional velo, over the top release with fluid exchange and footwork, some throws flashing carry, mostly accurate.

Adam Lackey, C, Eureka (MO), 2017
Lackey is a 6-foot 185-pound right-handed hitting catcher from Missouri’s 2017 class, recently committed to Concordia (IL).  He ran a 7.88 60 and 4.69 home-to-first.  He has an 85 mph exit velo. At the plate, balanced stance, no wasted movement in load, closed stride, swing produced middle to opposite field line drives during batting practice.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.09 and 2.33-seconds, 71 mph positional velo, over the top release, efficient exchange keeping hands high, moves well on blocks, fluid footwork, mostly accurate throws, flashing carry.

Jackson Rehkow, C, Blue Springs South (MO), 2017
Rehkow is a 6-foot-1 210-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2017 class.  He ran a 7.43 60 and 4.50 home to first.  He has an 85 mph exit velo. At the plate, balanced stance, reverse toe tap, aggressive swing, quick hands and fast bat, level through the zone, consistent hard line drives to the middle of the cage during batting practice.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.00 and 2.13-seconds, one of the top pop times of the event, 74 mph positional velo, one of the top catchers velos for the event, fluid glove to hand exchange, over the top release, hands work with feet to create momentum to throw, accurate throws with carry.
