KS Diamond Notes: Week 1 & 2

Each week, KSHSAA coaches around the state submit to us their nominations for the PBR Kansas Player and Pitcher of the Week. While we can only pick one of each, there are always a number of other impressive performances that were in the mix for the award and deserve recognition. Here’s a look at some of the most notable from the first two weeks of games.
Week 1
Deacon Pomeroy C / RHP / Shawnee Heights, KS / 2025The Oklahoma State commit went 5-for-9 with three doubles and four RBI. The right-hander also threw a no-hitter vs KC Turner, racking up five innings pitched with seven strikeouts.

Braxton Martin RHP / SS / Bishop Carroll, KS / 2025If we would have posted a Pitcher of the Week in week 1, it would have went to the junior from Bishop Carroll. Martin tossed eight innings against rival Derby on 92 pitches, racking up seven punchouts and only allowing three hits and one walk.

Micah McGavran C / 3B / Olathe West High School, KS / 2025In his first three games of the season, McGavran had three triples and a home run which resulting in seven RBI and a slash line of: batting avg .364, OBP .462, OPS 1.643 and SLG was 1.182.

Brayden Walker SS / 2B / Olathe West, KS / 2025Walker posted a solid first week, going 3-for-5 and an OBP of .778 to go along with for stolen bases and four RBI.

Week 2
Carter Liezert RHP / RHP / Olathe East , KS / 2024The Northwest Missouri State comment tossed five innings racking up six strikeouts and allowing only four hits while shutting out one of the top offenses in the state.

Weston Lyerly RHP / Shawnee Mission East, KS / 2024The Indiana State commit earned the win going 6 and 1/3 with 12 strikeouts and allowing just two runs on three hits and three walks.

Justin Zerger OF / RHP / Newton, KS / 2024The Pamona-Pitzer College commit posted an average of .642 going 9-for-14, with three doubles, two triples, racking up 8 RBI and 7 walks, three of which were intentional walks. OBP .772 (17-22), SLG 1.143 (16/14), OPS 1.915.

Whit Rhodes RHP / Hesston, KS / 2024The Nebraska commit twirled a no-hitter for Hesston, going five innings and punching out 11 with six of those looking. 5 IP, 0 H, 11 K's - 6 looking.
