MS All State Games: Pitching Analysis

Jackson, MS – For the second year the MS All-State Games revealed more depth in both the 2020 and 2021 class, along with several 2019 standouts. Statistics and video have already been uploaded into players profiles. The last few weeks we began rolling out player reports with the outfielders and infielders.

Today we take a deeper look into the pitchers that were in attendance.

+ Cole Ables, LHP/OF, Benton Academy, 2019      
Average 5-foot-11, 165-pound frame with athletic build. Left-handed pitcher with short arm action into high-3/4 release and quick hand speed out front. Solid balance, and regular effort in delivery. Slowed rhythm, shoulders stay down, in-line direction, lands closed, and finishes athletic. Fastball sat 72-76 mph, touching 77 mph with natural arm side run. Breaking ball was thrown with near fastball arm speed at 63-64 mph while flashing a changeup at 69-70 mph.

+ Guice Hill, RHP/2B, Humphreys Academy, 2019
Medium, athletic 5-foot-9, 180-pound frame. Right-handed pitcher starting in a lowered, crouched position. Up-tempo rhythm working into a high-¾ release with level shoulders working down the mound. Finishes athletically and off to the first base side.  Fastball was commanded around the zone at 68-70 mph while breaking ball was thrown at 60-62 mph and showed early, gradual 11/5 shape. 

+ Matt Jones, OF/RHP, Jim Hill, 2020
Athletic 5-foot-6, 150-pound frame. Right-handed pitcher throwing from high-¾ release with fluid rhythm and regular effort in delivery. Level shoulders as he works downhill with in-line direction, landing square and finishing athletically. Fastball was thrown around the zone at 65-70 mph. Breaking ball showed early 11/5 shape at 55-58 mph. 

+ Leif Moore, SS/RHP, St. Martin, 2019
Pearl River CC recruit. Athletic 5-foot-11, 180-pound right-hander with lean build and room to add strength. Showed polish, and athleticism to his delivery with feel for the position. Medium arm stroke into high-3/4 release with quick arm speed and regular effort. Pitched 85-88 mph with his fastball, showing ability to command the pitch to both sides of the plate with life to the arm side. Breaking ball showed near 12/6 shape with quality spin and depth at 70-72 mph. Also showed feel for a changeup with fastball arm speed, deception and fade action at 78-79 mph.

+ Colton Neal, OF/RHP, Lewisburg, 2022
Athletic 5-foot-9, 165-pound frame with plenty of room to add strength over the next couple of years. The right-hander located his fastball to both sides of the plate at 73-77 mph, touching 78 mph, and received several swings and misses on this sinking fastball. Worked with a long arm swing from back to front, into a high-3/4 release with looseness in delivery.

+ Eric Newsom, OF/RHP, Germantown, 2019
Physical 6-foot-3, 220-pound frame with athletic build. Short arm action into high-3/4 release with quick arm speed, solid balance, and regular effort. Athletic delivery working with in-line direction finishing off to the first base side. . Fastball sat 86-87 mph, touching 88 mph with heaviness and sink. Breaking ball showed near 12/6 shape and good spin at 71-73 mph. Also showed a changeup with near fastball arm speed and sinking action at 78-80 mph.

+ Cole Pittman, OF/RHP, Porters Chapel Academy, 2019
Wiry 6-foot-2, 180-pound frame with room for added strength. Right-handed pitcher throwing from high-¾ release with fluid rhythm and stiffness, effort in delivery. Fastball sat 76-77 mph and was commanded around the zone. Breaking ball showed spin, depth and 11/5-shape at 63-69 mph and change was thrown at 70-71 mph.

+ Robert Riggin, SS/2B, Raymond, 2020
Medium 6-foot-1, 188-pound frame, with present strength in build. Right-handed pitcher throwing from high-¾ release, with solid balance, and regular effort in delivery. Fluid rhythm with slightly tilted shoulders and in-line direction working down mound, finishes athletically. Fastball was commanded around the zone at 78-82 mph with angle when down in the zone. Breaking ball showed 11/5-shape with depth at 65-69 mph

+ Justin Robinson, RHP/OF, Pearl River Central, 2022
Maturing 5-foot-9, 136-pound frame with room to continue to fill. Right-handed pitcher works from a high-3/4 slot with a medium arm stroke and rhythm in delivery. Works down mound with direction finishing tall and slightly off to the first base side. Fastball was thrown around the zone at 72-74 mph, touching 75 mph with angle when down in the zone and arm side run. Breaking ball showed early shape at 60-61 mph, while change was thrown at 67-68 mph.

+ Jackson Roy, 3B/1B, Oxford, 2020
Medium build 6-foot, 190-pound frame. Right-handed pitcher works from a high-3/4 slot with a medium arm stroke and rhythm in delivery. Works down mound with direction finishing tall and slightly off to the first base side. Fastball scattered the zone at 70-72 mph.

+ Mac Sims, RHP/SS, DeSoto Central, 2020
Athletic 5-foot-11, 170-pound frame with room for added strength.. Right-handed pitcher throwing from multiple release points with fluid rhythm and easy effort in delivery. Works down mound with in-line direction, finishing athletically. With a medium arm stroke and quick hand speed, his fastball was 80-83 mph, touching 84 mph. Spun several sliders from a lower slot that showed late breaking action at 70-71 mph while change up was 72-73 mph.

+ Cole Tolbert, 3B/RHP, West Jones, 2021
Projectable 6-foot-3, 205-pound frame with long levers and room to fill. Right-handed pitcher throwing from high-¾ release, with solid balance, regular effort and looseness in arm action. A long arm swing working into a high-¾ release producing heavy arm side run at 80-86 mph, topping out once at 88 mph. His curveball was 66-67, and also showed feel for a changeup with fading action at 72-73 mph. Displayed a confident presence on the mound.

+ Elijah Watts, 3B/RHP, Resurrection Catholic, 2020
Hulky 6-foot-2, 215-pound frame. Right-handed pitcher throwing from high-¾ release with fluid rhythm and loose, quick arm stroke with regular effort in delivery. Fastball sat 79-80 mph and was commanded around the zone, topping at 81 mph. Breaking ball showed gradual 11/5-shape at 66-68 mph and change was thrown at 72-73 mph.

+ Brady Windham, OF/RHP, Richland, 2019
Medium 5-foot-9, 170-pound frame, with present strength in build. Right-handed pitcher throwing from high-¾ release, with solid balance, and regular effort in delivery. Fluid rhythm with slightly tilted shoulders and in-line direction working down mound, finishes athletically. Fastball was commanded around the zone at 80-83 mph with angle when down in the zone. Breaking ball had 11/5-shape with depth at 70-72 mph.
