The 2017 high school season yielded many stellar individual performances across all corners of North Carolina. But one player stood above the rest:

MacKenzie Gore

Gore, a senior left handed pitcher from Whiteville HS, delivered a statistically dominant season while helping lead his team to the NCHSAA 1A State Championship.  The 6-foot-1, 170 pounder dominated hitters in the spring of 2017.  Going 11-0 with a minuscule 0.19 ERA was just the beginning.  The East Carolina commit worked 74.1 innings allowing 25 hits, striking out 158, while only walking 5 hitters.  Known for his prowess on the mound, Gore hit .478 at the plate with 19 extra base hits, including 7 home runs.  A known commodity in North Carolina for quite some time, Gore captured the attention of scouts from across the country, eventually being drafted in the first round, number three overall, by the San Diego Padres.

MacKenzie Gore’s all-around performance has earned him the 2017 Prep Baseball Report North Carolina Player of the Year honors.

Gore elevated himself above a great class of players in North Carolina this year and was selected by North Carolina Scouting Director Brandon Hall and his team of area scouts who covered the season throughout the spring. Player of the Year nominations are provided by high school coaches, pro scouts, and the PBR staff from across the state. Player of the Year criteria includes, but is not limited to, on-field production and positive character qualities that represent the state.
