2019 Top Prospect Games - 2021 & 2022 Pitcher Analysis

Brandon Hall & Matt Payne
NC Executive Director & Scouting Director

One of the premier events each summer on the PBR docket is the North Carolina Top Prospect Games.  This year, the Top Prospect Games took place on August 7th at Campbell University with over 50 of the top players from North Carolina in attendance.   Position players worked through a full pro-style workout, followed by a controlled scrimmage with pitchers throwing live to hitters.  PBR scouts were on hand to collect stats, notes, and evaluations on each player in attendance.

We continue the deep dive into information and players from the Top Prospect Games.  Below is a look at the six 2021 & 2022 pitchers that threw at the event.  Each arm projects to continue to make jumps with a lefty up to 91 and several 2022s beginning to make their name.

Top Prospect Games: 2021 & 2022 Pitchers

Jacob Coffin LHP / OF / Apex , NC / 2021

Average frame, standing 5-foot-10, 150 pounds.  Simple delivery, stable over the rubber with a high leg kick up to his chin.  Long arm swing with the hands positioned high as they break.  High front side for some deception.  Loose, above average arm speed to a high-3/4 slot.  Works level, landing on-line, and square.  Fastball played straight, flooding the zone at 79-82.  Slight hump out of the hand on the breaking ball with gradual 1/7 tilt at 61-66.  Straight change-up, slowing the arm somewhat, sitting at 68.

Drew Lanzo LHP / OF / Hickory Grove Christian, NC / 2022

Average frame, standing 6-foot, 165 pounds.  Compact delivery with an average leg lift.  Repeats the delivery.  Stable over the rubber.  Good rhythm, building tempo in the delivery.  Level and on-line, lands with a slightly closed toe.  Small fall to the 3B side through extension.  Above average arm speed.  Long, loose arm swing getting to a high-3/4 slot.  Slight elbow lead as the arm works to the top of its arc.  Fastball flooded the zone, with arm side run.  Fastball ranged 77-79.  Breaking ball works with a sweeping 2/8 arc and gradual movement at 62-65.  Depth is present.  Big break.  Has feel for landing and expanding the spin pitch.  Arm speed and youth suggest there is more room to his ceiling.  Pitch-ability is present and stuff should continue to elevate.

Tanner Lyne RHP / 3B / CFA Academy, NC / 2022

5 foot 10, 205-pound build.  Powerful lower half.  Strike thrower, showing the ability to locate down to the glove side and the ability to elevate for strikes and chase.  Flooded the zone with the fastball, up to 86.  Choppy delivery, maintaining stability over the rubber.  Works level and on-line, landing in-line and square.  Short, scapular loading arm action.  Above average arm speed.  High-3/4 release with average extension.  In the wind-up the fastball sat 82-86, spinning with rpm between 2000-2270.  Velocity dipped a bit in the stretch to 79-80.  Breaking ball will continue to develop.  Late 11/5 tilt, sitting 71-73.  Slows the arm a bit.  Depth is present, working out of a similar window to the fastball.  Works with pace and attacks with both fastball and breaking ball.
Offensively, slightly open setup with higher hands from the right side of the plate.  Hands work down and back during his load with an average stride.  Barrel works uphill through the zone with a pull tendency.  Some strength to his pull side with his exit velocity recorded at 90 mph.  Feet work around the ball on the infield with average hands.  Funnels to his midsection after catch, with clean transfers and a long arm action, throwing form a high ¾ slot.  Accurate arm that topped at 81 mph across the diamond. Recorded a 8.11 in the 60.

Cyle Phelan LHP / OF / Fuquay Varina, NC / 2021

Elite left-hander with strength in his lower half and athletic frame at 6-foot-1, 200 pounds.  Broad shoulders.  Arm strength and arm speed, bumping 91 while showing advanced secondary stuff.  Easy, repeatable delivery.  Stable over the rubber.  Average leg kick.  Long, loose arm swing to an over-the-top slot.  Some rhythm throughout, working level and slightly closed at balance.  Lands on-line and square, finishing with good extension.  Fastball flooded the zone sitting 88-90, and ranging 85-91.  From TrackMan, the fastball spin rate ranged 1850 – 1915.  Sharp, power breaking ball with late, 12/6 tilt at 69-71.  Around the zone, lacking pure feel for the spin pitch.   Spin on the breaking ball up to 2150.  Good feel and hand speed on the change-up at 74.

Matt Poole RHP / OF / Corinth Holders, NC / 2021

Slender frame at 6-foot-2, 170 pounds.  Around the zone, lacking pure command of any one pitch or one spot.  Athletic presence.  Stretch only.  Kick to the chin with a slight hand pump.  Long, levered arm swing, wrapping behind the body line, with above average arm speed to a high-3/4 slot.  Stable head throughout.  Lands on-line with a slightly closed front foot.  Fastball is heavy, some late arm side sink, at 80-83.  Late tilt to the breaking ball, working with similar hand speed to that of the fastball.  11/5 tilt at 67-70.  As the frame continues to add strength, the stuff should continue to tick up.

Cole Schiff LHP / 1B / Heritage, NC / 2021

6 foot 4, 190-pound frame with room to add strength.  Broad, sloping shoulders.  Simple side step, lifting to the bottom of the chest.  Slight pelvic tilt at balance.  Closed and tall at balance, works down the hill, landing across his line and square with the front foot.  Slight fall to the 3B side on extension.  Long, loose arm swing with average arm speed, working to a high-3/4 slot.  Fastball was around the zone, with run, at 80-83.  Curveball worked with 1/7 tilt, occasionally around the pitch creating more sweeping action.  Similar window and hand speed to the fastball, ranging 69-72.  As he fills out the large frame, the arm strength should tick stuff up.
Hits from the left side, staring with his weight on his back leg.  Dives into the plate with an average stride.  Loose hands with pop to his pull side.  Has lift in his swing with above average bat speed.  Doubled to left field during game action.  Exit velocity recorded at 94 mph.  Fluid feet off the bag at first base with average hands.  Clean transfers, with a long arm action, throwing from a high ¾ slot.  Positional velocity topped at 76 mph.  Recorded a 7.88 in the 60.
