Rain and arctic air filled North Carolina in the early part of the week.  With games being cancelled due to the weather or field conditions, the schedule for the week was backed up with a lot of good teams playing, across the state, over Friday and Saturday.  Prep Baseball Report, in it on-going quest to be the No. 1 source for High School Baseball in North Carolina was out covering the games and players involved.

Quick Strike Offense Leads Providence Day Over South Lake Christian

South Lake Christian worked to scrap and put two runs on the board in the top of the first, but Providence Day quickly answered in the home half.  Leadoff hitter, Bryce Daniel (2018, MIF, Dartmouth commit) found the barrel with a leadoff single to get the inning started.  After a ground out and a walk, Zach Iverson (2017, OF, Young Harris commit) put a charge in a hanging change-up driving it out of right field.  A no-doubter off the bat, the left handed hitter put Providence Day ahead to stay.  Adding runs in the fourth and fifth, Providence Day would prevail 5-2.

South Lake starter, Jason Hudak (2018, RHP, UNC Wilmington commit) worked into the fourth, giving up four runs, all earned.  Hudak walked five and struck out 2.

On the bump for Providence Day, 2017 RHP George Carrol kept a talented South Lake Christian offense off balance.  Not overpowering, the fastball ranged 71-75.  Carrol used a good mix of change-up and breaking ball to keep the Eagle hitters at bay.  Defensively, Max Lahn (2017, SS, Denison commit) and Daniel were very steady in the middle of the field, allow Carrol to pound the strike zone.  Carrol worked five innings, throwing 61 pitches, 41 for strikes.  He worked ahead with first pitch strikes, in 1- of the 18 at-bats he faced.

Charlotte Christian Uses a Late Push to Overcome Richmond

Nick Murrer (2017, INF, Lenoir Rhyne commit) singled home the winning run in the bottom of the 9th inning to end an epic battle between two teams with very high aspirations for the year.  Charlotte Christian scored two in the seventh to overcome a 3-1 deficit.

The story in throughout the first six innings were the pitchers.  For Richmond, Jonathan Lee (2018, LHP) was dominant, flooding the zone with a steady mix of fastball and curveball.  Keeping the Knights off balance, Lee worked into the 7th, punching 5, walking 2, and only surrendering 1 earned run.  A full scouting report on Lee will be up on the NC HS Scout Blog.

Charlotte Christian countered with 2017 RHP Scottie Wallace, a Wofford commit.  Wallace battled to find his stuff in the early going, but was sharp as he entered the latter half of the game.  Working 7 innings, he gave up 7 hits, striking out 5, and only issuing one walk.  Of the three runs, only one was earned.   Wallace received a no-decision after a dramatic bottom of the 7th.

Lee looked to complete the game and get the win in the 7th for Richmond.  Issuing a leadoff walk, followed by an error, the Knights were looking to build a come back.  A SAC bunt from the seven-hole hitter brought up Trey Donathan (2020, INF).  Trey worked a great at-bat, fouling off eight 2 strike pitches to work a thirteen pitch walk and load the bases.  A similar at-bat from the nine-hole hitter, Jonathan Jagielski (2018, 1B), as he singled on the tenth pitch of the at-bat to right field, scoring one and keeping the bases loaded.

Jack Webb (2017, RHP, USC Sumter JC commit) relieved Lee as Charlotte Christian leadoff hitter, Nick Murrer step in the box.  Murrer, living right, singled down the first base line, between the plate and the pitchers mound, settling on the foul line, scoring the tying run.  Webb showed some grit, striking out the next two hitters, with the bases loaded, sending the game to an extra frame.

Lefty Nick Suarez (2017, Lenoir Rhyne commit) worked two clean innings for the win, sending the game into  the bottom of the ninth.  JT Killen (2019, LHP) started the ninth off with a single.  Sacrificed to second, as the winning run, Charlotte Christian flipped the order when Jagielski earned a walk.  Murrer got a 1-1 pitch and hit a hard ground ball to center field, scoring Killen and giving the Knights the win.
