Charlotte MegaStar Scout Day: Catchers & Corner Infielders

Brandon Hall & Matt Payne
North Carolina Director of Scouting & PBR Assoc Scout

On Wednesday May 30th the Charlotte MegaStars held a Scout Day with Prep Baseball Report of North Carolina.  The Scout Day allowed the players from the MegaStars program to run through a full pro-style workout with players collecting verified stats from our independent service.  PBR Scouts were on hand to evaluate each prospect and players had the choice to add the evaluation and a video to their personal PBR profiles.

The updated statistics, evaluation, and video allow for a full PBR profile that can be shared with over 900 college coaches and Universities that subscribe to PBR.  With college and pro evaluators on hand, several players stood out, and have developed over the past few months.

Today we dive into some of the catchers and corner infielders from the workout.  Specifically we will look at two 2019 catchers and one 2021 catcher, along with five corner infielders from the 2019 and 2020 classes.  Marshall Raper (C, 2019) has advanced arm strength and was very accurate in the workout with a top pop time of 1.89. Luke Absher (3B, 2020) has some pop in his barrel with an exit velocity at 89 mph off the tee, leading Nicholas Kidd (3B, 2020) by just a tick, and all other corner guys.

Catcher Analysis

Timothy Keefauver C / SS / Clover High School, SC / 2021

6 feet, 140-pound lanky, projectable build. Still maturing and growth is to be expected.  Athletic with quickness, running a 7.05 sixty. Athleticism translates behind the plate with a quick release and accurate arm. Pop times ranged 2.15 - 2.38 with a release measuring 67 mph out of the crouch.  Soft hands with quick feet and clean, quick exchanges. A short arm action throwing from an over the top slot. Offensively, hits from the left side using an open setup with his weight going back in his load with a short stride. Gets his lower half through the ball with his barrel working short to the ball and staying level through the zone. Looks to stay gap to gap hitting line drives with good balance throughout his swing. Exit velocity recorded at 81 mph and should improve as he matures with added strength.

Marshall Raper C / 3B / Jay M Robinson, NC / 2019

Average frame at 6 feet 1, 190-pounds.  Some length and plenty of room to continue to add strength.  Quickness may increase as strength is added. Behind the plate he shows athleticism with quick feet and quick, clean exchanges with a short arm action leading to an over the top slot. Gets rid of the ball quickly with an accurate arm and carry to his throws at 82 mph out of the crouch.  Pop times ranged 1.89 - 1.97. Advanced accuracy as the ball stays true through the bag. Misses were on the bag but low. Athletic exchange and release. Offensively, works from the right side using a tall, balanced setup. Uses a short stride in his load getting his lower half through the ball. Looks to stay gap to gap with his barrel working level through the zone. Stays fluid throughout his swing with good rhythm and his exit velocity recorded at 89 mph.  Ran a 7.27 sixty.

Cole Robbins C / OF / Lake Norman, NC / 2019

Average frame at 5 feet 11, 170-pound build with room to add strength. Offensively he works from the right side with a balanced setup and uses a leg kick for his load. His bat works short to the ball at times, staying level through the zone and getting extension out front. He shows feel for his barrel, looking to stay in the middle of the field with a line drive approach and ball off the bat recorded at 85 mph.  Decent quickness in body but strength will improve and should help with measurables. Ran a 7.42 sixty, but flashed better off the line. Athletic behind the plate with average hands, fluid feet and clean exchanges. Pop times ranged 2.08 - 2.19. He uses a short arm action leading to an over the top slot. Shows some accuracy when he gets closed on his throws to second base. Arm speed peaked at 77 mph out of the hand.  Quickness over arm strength on throws.

Corner Infielder Analysis

Luke Absher 3B / RHP / Hibriten , NC / 2020

6 feet 5, 200-pound projectable build.  Lanky and beginning to add some strength to the frame.  Offensively he works from the right side with an athletic, tall, balanced setup. Gets his weight back smooth in his load with a short stride and getting his lower half through the ball. His barrel works level through the zone getting good extension out front showing a gap to gap line drive approach. Stays fluid throughout his swing with good balance and ball off the bat recorded at 89 mph. Showed the ability to keep his bat in the zone and hit line drives. On the infield he shows average hands with fluid feet and clean exchanges with a long arm action leading to an over the top slot. Shows an average arm with some accuracy that should play better with more looseness and playing through the ball more.  Arm peaked at 81 across the diamond. Ran a 7.67 sixty.

On the mound the lanky righty has arm side run on a fastball that lived in the zone at 76-78.  Exaggerated over-the-top slot creates a little funk for hitters to deal with. Clears the head for the release.  Quick arm, with a long arc to the over-the-top slot. Tall through balance with some rhythm in the delivery. Works level and on-line, landing with the toe strike slightly open.  Has feel for a downer, 12/6 breaking ball. Gradual tilt at 64-66. Window on the breaking ball should allow the fastball to elevate at times in the zone and above. Projection exists with the arm speed and length in the frame.

Cole Fuller 1B / 3B / Cox Mill, NC / 2020

6 feet, 180-pound strong build. Works from the right side offensively with an athletic, balanced setup. Shows a smooth load with his weight going back and short stride getting his lower half through the ball. Has feel for his barrel, working short to the ball, staying level through the zone and getting extension out front. Stays simple with a gap to gap approach and shows the ability to hit line drives. Fluid in his swing with good balance and his exit velocity recorded at 84 mph. On the infield he shows average hands with fluid feet, funneling to the center of his body with clean exchanges. Uses a longer arm action working to a high ¾ slot with accurate throws across the diamond.  Carry measured at 76 mph across the field. Ran a 7.64 sixty.

Nicholas Kidd 3B / RHP / West Caldwell, NC / 2020

6 feet 2, 210-pound build.  Strength is present with a strong lower half.   Hits from the right side using a balanced setup and toe tap for his load. Bat head wraps slightly but has feel for the barrel and stayed direct in a BP setting.  Shows strength in his swing with his exit velocity recorded at 88 mph and should improve as he learns to use his lower half more throughout his swing. More pull type approach looking to get the ball in the air with his barrel working uphill quickly after contact. On the infield he funnels to the center of his body with clean exchanges and long arm action working to a high ¾ slot. Shows an accurate arm at 77mph across the diamond that should play better as he looks to play through the ball with more fluidity.  Ran a 8.29 laser timed sixty.
Slow tempo and balanced throughout his delivery on the mound, fastball flooded the zone, straight at 71-75.  Has ability to locate to both sides. Long arm swing works to an over-the-top release. Gradual arc and tilt on the breaking ball at 60-62.  Lacked command but was around the zone.

Carson Rowland 1B / RHP / Westminster Catawba Christian, NC / 2019

6 feet 2, 200-pound build. Hits from the right side using a balanced setup and short stride for his load. Looks to stay in the middle of the field with a line drive approach. His barrel works short to the ball, staying level through the zone and getting extension out front. Loose hands with good balance throughout his swing. Exit velocity recorded at 81 mph and should improve as he gets his lower half through the ball more. At first base, average hands with fluid feet and clean exchanges.  On positional throws, arm lacks some carry at 66 mph across the diamond. Short arm action and repeats his release, making for accurate throws. Ran a 7.50 sixty.
