SCOUT BLOG

Peter Perez, 3B, Myers Park HS, 2023
Athletic build with broad shoulders. Moves well initially at 3B. Physical presence at the top of the lineup for Myers Park. Balanced and tall with a simple rock into his load.  Average bat speed. Works level and shows solid strength through contact. Gap to gap approach but works for extension in positive counts. Laced two line drives, including a 2 RBI single.

Ike Schmidly, OF, Myers Park HS, 2023
James Madison commit. Stands 6-foot-2, 195 pounds. Advanced runner that covered ground with ease in CF.  Moves athletically and a natural catcher of the ball in the OF. Right handed hitter works from a tall, balanced base. Good bat speed with average barrel feel.  When on the barrel the ball exploded off the bat. Line drive single to right and a grand slam to left.

William Greenway, RHP,  Myers Park HS, 2024
Thin frame at 6-foot, 175 pounds. Simple, stable delivery working level and in-line. Lands on-line and square at foot-strike with a natural finish working through the plate. Short to medium arm action with some effort to a high-3/4 slot.  Average to above arm speed. Fastball at 84-86 early, settling at 81-83. Late arm side movement. Spin rate ranged 2300-2410rpm. Slider was erratic and is still maturing. Ranged 76-78, 2250rpm. Lacked pure feel for any one spot but showed an ability to work through some adversity and make pitches from the stretch.

Clay Masonis, RHP, Myers Park HS, 2024
Average build. Stands 6-foot-1, 170 pounds. Short stint and he attacked the zone with a solid fastball, slider mix.  Fastball at 84-87 in the wind up, dipping to 81-83 in the stretch. Early horizontal run, out of the hand. Slider sat 78-79, 2350rpm. Simple delivery working level and on-line. Medium arm action to a high-3/4 slot.

Luke McGrath, RHP, Myers Park HS, 2023
James Madison commit. Athletic frame at 6-foot-1, 185 pounds. Elite ride and carry on the fastball at 88-90, spinning at 2430-2570rpm. Swing and miss in the zone when located at mid-thigh or above. Slider worked out of a similar window with late, hard tilt at 80, 2350-2500rpm.  Attacked hitters with pace and stuff.  Simple delivery. Stable. Repeats. Short, natural arm action loading the scapular. Works to a high-3/4 slot.  Excellent arm speed. Good direction with some rotation to the 1B side through his finish.

Ryan Hawkins, SS, East Mecklenburg HS, 2023
Small frame with strength and quickness present. Stands 5-foot-7, 155 pounds. Right handed hitter works from a tall, balanced base. Simple load. Works level with average to above bat speed and strength through contact.  Showed excellent ball to barrel feel while working to stay within the strike zone. Three hard hit singles on the day, working from the pull-side gap to the right field line.  Played SS. Aggressive feet with solid hands.  Some effort in the exchange and release. May be more fitted for 2B or the OF at the next level.  Quickness should allow him to transition to the OF with some ease.

Brantley Truitt, OF, East Mecklenburg HS, 2023
Strength and quickness present at 6-foot, 170 pounds. Defined muscular strength in the lower half. Advanced runner that showed off an ability to cover gap-to-gap with his speed. Left handed hitter works from a tall, upright base. Waggle in the hands and bat. Slight kick to rock back with an average stride. Flashed advanced bat speed. Lacked pure barrel feel, missing some balls he had the chance to drive. Opening night and we will check back later in the spring to see the barrel feel improve.
