NC Preseason All-State: Infielders Part II - 2019 & 2020 Grads

The premier winter showcase event for baseball players in North Carolina took place at On Deck Baseball Academy in Pineville, NC on Saturday January 28th.  The invite only event featured 76 of the top players in North Carolina.  Running through an extended pro-style workout, position players were able to show off their talents on defense, in the cages, and with a series of speed and agility tests.  The pitchers threw controlled bullpens, keeping in mind it is still January, showcasing their delivery, arm slot and arm action.  

Below is a look at the infielders from the 2017 & 2018 classes.  Each player was able to showcase his ability on defense and in the box.

INFIELDERS


2019

Cameron Greene, 2B, Charlotte Country Day School, NC

Lanky and athletic build, listed at 5-foot-11, 160 pounds with room on the frame for strength.  Ran a 4.19 thirty and recorded a 8-foot-1 standing broad jump.  Good actions on the infield.  Catches the ball with ease funneling to the mid-section.  Sort hands, quick, fluid feet and clean exchanges.  Athleticism shows on defense.  Short arm swing to a high-3/4 slot showing good accuracy and some carry. Flashed the ability to use different arm angles.   Arm strength measured at 76 across the diamond.  Offensively, works with good balance from an athletic stance and short stride.  Mechanical actions work to a level swing with a pull tendency.  Exit velocity measured at 80 off the barrel.

 

Caleb Fluno, 3B, Home Schooled (Wake County Warriors), NC

Physical and strong with quickness in the body that is listed at 6-foot-4, 182 pounds.  Showed aggressiveness with a quick bat through the zone, exit velocity testing at 88mph.  Works from a tall, athletic base.  Short stride with a load to get the barrel to vertical creates a whippy, aggressive swing.  Strong and does not get cheated.  Strength over quickness in swing right now, working with uphill leverage.  Ran a 4.22 thirty with an explosive 9-foot-3 standing broad jump.  On the infield, shows soft hands, lacking a funnel into the exchange.  Feet show athleticism, although not always timed to work with the hands.  Long arm swing, loose, works to a high-3/4 slot with some accuracy.  Arm strength showed 75 across the diamond.

 

Alex Sniffen, 3B, New Hanover HS, NC

Physical with strength in a 6-foot-4, 218 pound frame.  Ball jumped off the barrel registering a 90mph exit speed.  Tall stance and athletic base.  Hands drop slightly as the stride gains ground with aggression.  Fast bat works with uphill leverage, wanting extension and working to the pull side.  Future power potential is evident.  Caught the ball on the infield, showing soft hands and rhythm in the feet.  Clean exchanges work to an over-the-top slot showing carry with average accuracy.  Arm speed topped at 81.  Ran a 4.44 thirty and recorded a 7-foot-6 broad jump.

 

Casey Shipman, 1B, Gray’s Creek HS, NC

Some quickness in the body.  Listed at 5-foot-11, 180 pounds ran a 4.19 thirty and registered a 7-foot-8 standing broad jump.  Open stance worked to a short stride producing a level swing.  Stayed gap-to-gap.  Average barrel awareness.  Exit velocity tested at 75 off the bat.  Short arm action works to a high-3/4  slot showing some accuracy.  Hands speed topped at 62. 

 

DeAngelo Giles, SS, High Point Central, NC

Does a lot of things well with projection left.  5-foot-11, 170 pounds, starts open, using a leg kick and short stride to generate better than average bat speed.  Some bat waggle throughout the load.  Exit velocity of 84, finding consistent barrel.  Path is level, working for extension and staying gap-to-gap with good rhythm.  At short, has rhythm and catches the ball funneling to the mid-section.  Hands work with ease to the exchange.  Some shoulder stiffness as the arm works to a high-3/4 slot showing some carry at 75mph across the field.  Ran a 4.25 thirty.  Standing broad jump tested at 7-foot-4.

 

Owen Harley, SS, Parkwood HS, NC

Young frame stands 5-foot-8, 145 pounds.  Ran a 4.03 thirty and tested with a 8-foot-4 standing broad jump.  In the box, works from an athletic stance with a short stride.  Good approach stays level with consistent line drives through the middle of the field.  Has barrel awareness with the barrel staying flat through the zone.  Exit velocity topped at 83.  Defensively, arm works with a long action to a high-3/4 slot showing some accuracy and average carry.  Arm strength topped at 76 across the diamond.  Active feet work to circle the ball with rhythm.  Late glove show and hands exchange around the mid-section.

 

Michael Misenheimer, SS, Piedmont HS, NC

Some athleticism in the 5-foot-11, 165 pound frame.  Caught the ball, clean exchanges work to a long arm path to a high-3/4 slot.  Some accuracy as arm strength tested at 72 across the infield.  Ran a 4.40 thirty and tested at 7-foot-10 in the standing broad jump.  In the box, sets up tall, using a smooth load of the hands, down and in, with a small stride.  Pull tendency with some hook action in the swing.  Shows some barrel awareness.  Exit velocity topped at 78.

 

Grayson Preslar, SS, Anson HS, NC

Intriguing switch hitter that catches the ball with ease at short.  Lean, young frame, stands 5-foot-11, 165 pounds.  Fluid feet and clean exchanges as he works to play through the ball, showcase the hands.  At times high though his hips in the fielding position.  Short arm action to a high-3/4 slot peaked at 70 across the diamond.  Left handed swing worked with an exit velocity of 85.  Athletic setup with a limited stride and weight shift back to start the timing.  A little hooky with average barrel awareness.  From the right side, exit velocity topped at 84.  Works with a vertical bat and a tall base.  Short stride gets to a pull tendency.  Good rhythm.  Ran a 4.06 thirty and turned in a standing broad jump of 8-foot-8.

 

Trey Donathan, SS, Charlotte Christian, NC

Power and quickness packed into a 5-foot-9, 165 pound frame.  Aggressive in the box, never cheated on the swing.  Balanced and athletic to start, uses a big leg kick to load the backside.  Quick bat through the zone uses an explosive lower half.  Uphill leverage with a pull tendency.  Average barrel awareness.  Exit velocity tested at 83.  Ball showed better carry off the barrel.  Arm carried on the infield, topping at 85.  Tends to be active with his feet, creating wide angles, working around balls.  Clean exchanges, while playing though the ball.  Short arm action gets to a high-3/4 slot.  Ran a 4.19 thirty.  Standing broad jump tested at 8-foot-5.

 

Wes Bowlin, 1B, Metrolina Christian Academy, NC

Listed at 6-foot, 190 pounds.  Tall stance uses a leg kick, loading the barrel to a vertical position.  Very aggressive, wanting extension, while working to the pull side.  Exit velocity topped at 83.  Showed an ability to catch the ball on the infield.  Long exchange works to a an over-the-top slot with a long arm swing.  Some accuracy.  Arm strength tested at 67.  Ran a 4.41 thirty.  Standing broad jump topped at 7-foot-8.

 

Xander Hamilton, 1B, Broughton HS, NC

Physically imposing at 6-foot-4, 195 pounds.  Works from an athletic and tall base as a right handed hitter.  Leg kick works to an average stride, loading the back side.  Better than average batspeed works to some uphill leverage while wanting extension.  Some length in the swing, with average barrel awareness.  Exit velocity topped at 84, flashing better carry at times.  Ran a 4.13 thirty with a 8-foot-8 standing broad jump.  Across the infield, short arm action worked to a high-3/4 slot with arm speed measuring at 78.  Ball has life and carry with some accuracy.  Hands and feet work to create some rhythm.  Tends to stab when the feet get heavy.

 

Ronald Evans II, SS, Leesville Road HS, NC

Strong and athletic at 6-foot-2, 200 pounds.  Works with ease throughout a lot of his game.  Future power potential is evident.  Exit velocity topped at 90 with some uphill leverage and extension with better than average bat speed.  Starts open, with a tall base.  Long, aggressive stride has rhythm, staying gap-to-gap.  Consistent with approach and aggression.  Ran a 4.07 thirty and produced an explosive 9-foot broad jump.  At short, plays with ease and a calm nature.  Arm swing works to the play in front of him allowing for multiple arm slots and accuracy.  A typical high-3/4 slot measured at 80mph across the infield. 

 

Dominic Ciccone, 1B, Piedmont HS, NC

Physical 6-foot-3, 215 pounder.  Tall stance, loading back, with a short stride.  Some uphill leverage with a pull tendency, the exit velocity measured at 87 off the barrel.  Strength in the body.  Strength over quickness in the swing.  Ran a 4.28 thirty.  Standing broad jump measured 7-foot-6.  On the infield, long arm swing works to an over-the-top slot.  Showed accuracy.  Arm strength topped at 69. 

 

Hunter Hutchens, 1B, East Forsyth HS, NC

Lanky body that suggests it can handle additional strength.  Listed at 6-foot-1, 180 pounds.  Tall stance works with a leg kick and aggressive stride.  Some uphill leverage, wanting extension, with a pull tendency.  Exit velocity tested at 85 off the barrel.  Aggressive with the ability to drive the ball when on the barrel.  On defense, shows athleticism in the feet, working with rhythm and ease on transfers to a short, high-3/4 slot.  Very accurate.  Ran a 4.34 thirty.  Standing broad jump tested at 8-foot.

 

Landen Harris, 1B, South View HS, NC

Athletic feet for his size, listed at 6-foot-4, 240 pounds.  Tends to work through balls on defense, creating a clean exchange and working to a high-3/4 slot with a long arm arc.  Shows accuracy.  Offensively, works from a balanced setup with a short stride.  Average bat speed works to the pull side sweeping through the zone.  Exit velocity topped at 87 off the barrel.  Ran a 4.66 thirty.  Standing broad jump tested at 7-foot-3.

 

2020

Preston Hall, 3B, Stuart Cramer HS, NC

Athletic and aggressive in a 6-foot, 175 pound frame.  Swings it from the right side with good head discipline.  Balanced and athletic setup.  Short stride with an easy load works to create better than average bat speed.  Exit velocity tested at 82.  Swing stays level, wanting extension with a pull tendency.  Fluid rhythm.  From the infield, hands worked with some softness.  Feet work around the ball, a v-cut action, playing through the ball.  Arm action works to the play, settling at a high-3/4 slot with accuracy and measuring 79 across the infield.  Ran a 4.21 thirty.  Standing broad jump tested at 8-foot-6.
