PBR Scout Day: Carolina Rockies - Outfielder Analysis

By Brandon Hall
North Carolina

Saturday August 19th saw nearly thirty players from the Carolina Rockies organization gather at Forsyth Country Day School for a PBR Scout Day.  The Rockies organization is run out of the Greensboro / High Point area, drawing players from the Triad Area of North Carolina, and beyond.

The event allowed players to run through a full workout in front of PBR’s staff.  As part of the scout day, each player is receiving a full PBR player profile page equipped with verified stats, evaluations, and video.  Stories of the event will be posted in the “news” section of PBR in the coming week, giving more individual details on the player’s performance at the Scout Day.

The outfield group for the Rockies are a continued work in progress as many have a lot of projection left in their frames.  2019 OF David Asbill led the group with an impressive round of BP followed by showing some versatility and working out on the infield.  a 7.23 sixty and an exit velocity of 83 off the barrel should only get better as there is strength added to the athletic frame.

Scout Day Quick Hitters

Outfield Analysis

Carlos Amezquita OF / SS / West Forsyth, NC / 2019

Athletically built with a 5-foot-11, 150 pound frame.  Quickness is present.  Ran a 7.18 sixty.  Athletic stance from the right side, slightly open.  Loads the bat head from a vertical position to a lagged position, using a short stride.  Loose throughout with average bat speed, looking for extension.  Good barrel ability showing a pull emphasis.  Exit velocity touched 74, playing better on field.  Projection exists.  Cautious through the ball in the outfield.  Easy transition to a short, strong arm swing and high-3/4 slot.  Positional velocity peaked at 71 showing decent carry and some accuracy.

David Asbill OF / SS / Reagan, NC / 2019

Thin frame with room for strength at 5-foot-10, 150 pounds.  Has quickness, running a 7.23 sixty.  Primary outfielder, has versatility, working out with the infielders on the day.  Fluid through the baseball with good hands.  Hips play a little high at point of the catch.  Clean exchanges, working to play through the ball.  Arm works with looseness in a short arm swing to a high-3/4 slot, showing an ability to be athletic with the slot on the move.  Advanced accuracy with carry at 78 across the infield.  Right handed hitter works from a balanced, athletic stance, loading back with a leg kick to shift the weight.  Short stride.  Bat head works from a vertical position with the lead arm getting to a position of strength.  Aggressive demeanor.  Average barrel awareness.  Better than average bat speed produced an exit velocity of 83 off the barrel.  More coming.  Works level, peppering line drives through the middle of the field.  Has looseness.
On the mound the fastball plays straight but firm at 77-78, filling the strike zone up.  Change-up is a little hard at 74, working with near fastball hand speed.  Change does have fade and could create issues for hitters with the movement.  The breaking ball sat 70-73 with inconsistent shape as the hand gets around the pitch early.  Works from a high-3/4 slot with a long arm action.  Rushes through balance at times, working to stay tall as the shoulders work level.  Lands on-line, falling to the 1B side through his finish.  Some effort through a choppy delivery.

Dalton Tate Hudler OF / OF / Ashe County , NC / 2018

Thin build at 6-foot, 150 pounds.  Aggressive to the ball in the outfield, catching balls deep toward the body and transitioning to a long arm action, working from an over-the-top slot.  Shows accuracy.  Positional velocity peaked at 73 out of the hand.  Right handed hitter works from a tall base, open, with the hands set high.  Vertical bat, the hands load down into his slot with a short stride.  Stays level in the zone, wanting extension as the bat sweeps the zone.  Exit velocity touched 81 off the barrel.  Ran a 7.56 sixty.

Spero Moutos SS / OF / Mount Tabor, NC / 2021

Young frame with maturity still ahead.  Average build, thin at 5-foot-6, 130 pounds.  Primary outfielder shows versatility working out on the infield.  Long arm action works to an over-the-top release measuring 70 across the infield with some accuracy.  Some athleticism in the release, matching the arm swing to the play.  Direct approach to the ball, sitting through the catch.  7.36 sixty should get better with strength as the first 30 yards was strong.  Right handed hitter works from a tall stance.  Vertical bat.  Short stride.  Length in swing at times with average bat speed.  Stayed in the middle of the field.  Exit velocity of 70 off the barrel.

Jacob Perez OF / LHP / West Rowan, NC / 2019

Right handed hitter has some length in his levers at 6-foot-2, 160 pounds.  Plenty of room to project strength.  Works from a wide, balanced stance.  Short to no stride as the hands load down slightly.  Showed barrel ability with an exit velocity of 82 coming from average bat speed.  Works level through the zone, staying gap-to-gap with good rhythm.  Some stiffness from setup to load but swing loosens after.  Ran a 7.30 sixty with a good burst off the line.  From the outfield, cautious through the ball with clean transitions to a long arm action with a high front side.  Over-the-top slot.  Showed some accuracy with a positional velocity of 74 out of the hand.
On the mound works with a high-3/4 slot and some quickness in the release from a long, loose arm swing.  Tall through balance with level shoulders.  Some effort as the stride foot lands on the open side.  Fastball played straight at 72-75.  Change up works with some deception in the hand speed at 69-70.  Occasional arm side run.  Breaking ball sat 61-63 rolling with early, gradual 12/6 tilt.  Feel for the zone with all three.
