Brandon Hall
North Carolina Director of Scouting

One hundred of the top players from across North Carolina converged on Pineville, NC and the On Deck Academy to take part in the PBR Preseason All-State event.  In its third year, the Preseason All-State event has become one of the premier events in North Carolina for high caliber high school players.

Billed as one of the top events in the state, with an incredible roster put together the day did not disappoint.  Personal records, as well as event records were shattered throughout the day.

Seven uncommitted arms threw at the Preseason All-State.  Four of the arms were up to at least 84.  One arm worked out as a position player as well and profiles as a potential dual prospect at the next level.  Below are full evaluations, with statistics, and links back to the players' individual videos.

Preseason All-State Evaluations: 2019 Pitchers

Reid Dittner RHP / 1B / Apex Friendship, NC / 2019

Large frame with a strong lower half at 6-foot-4, 285 pounds.  Stable over the rubber.  Average leg lift to the bottom of the chest.  Hands rise to the chin before breaking. Front leg kicks out, swinging to foot strike.  Lands on-line and square.  Average arm swing, early to the top of his arm circle.  Strong position at foot strike.  Arm strength over arm speed.  Fastball at 85-86, heavy with sink.  Erratic early, dialed in control of the zone as the bullpen progressed.  11/5 tilt is early, producing big break in the curveball, ranging 71-72.  Has feel for the zone with the spin pitch.  Change-up sat 74 from a slower arm speed and is the distant 3rd pitch at this time.

Zack Michael OF / LHP / Apex, NC / 2019

5 foot 10, 170-pound athletic build.  Offensively he works from the left side with an athletic setup.  Fluid load with his hands working back with no stride.  Good balance throughout his swing with a controlled approach.  Loose hands with barrel whip through the zone.  Gets his barrel in the zone with it working slightly uphill after contact.  Feel for the barrel, driving the ball mostly middle to his pull side.  Above average bat speed with his exit velocity peaking at 90-mph.  Athletically plays through balls in the outfield with fluid feet and average hands.  Long, loose arm action, throwing from a high ¾ slot.  Arm has carry topping at 84 mph.  Recorded a 3.88 in the 30-yard dash, 4.52 in the 5-10-5, and 9-1 in the standing broad jump.
New to the mound, the athleticism and hand speed translates.  Slow tempo builds through the delivery.  Slight side step to an average leg kick.  On-line and level, lands square.  Back side fights to get through on time.  Medium arm swing to an over-the-top slot with a fast arm.  Fastball at 84-85, touching 86.   Erratic at times, the fastball played hard out of the hand.  Breaking ball with 1/7 tilt at 72-74.  Early action to the spin, hard at times with some feel for the zone.  Change-up has some sink from a slower arm speed sitting 73-75.

Penn Sealey RHP / 3B / Broughton, NC / 2019

Lanky and athletic at 6-foot-4, 180 pounds.  Easy to project more stuff coming as he matures the frame.  Length in his limbs.  Simple rocker creating tempo to an average leg lift with a slight tuck from the upper body.  Long, loose arm swing works to a high-3/4 slot.  Arm is quick.  Lands on-line at foot strike with a square toe.  Back side is aggressive allowing the head to remain stable throughout the delivery.  Fastball at 83-85, dipping to 82-83 from the stretch with a slide step.  Run to the arm side on the fastball.  Breaking ball rolls with a slight hump out of the hand at 70-72.  11/5 tilt with near fastball hand speed.  High ceiling as the body continues to add strength.

Spencer Calloway RHP / OF / East Forsyth , NC / 2019

Lanky 6-foot-1, 165 pounds.  Long limbs.  Plenty of room to continue to add strength.  Small rocker to an average leg kick.   Slightly coiled at balance, closing his line as the hands separate.  Lands across his line with a square toe, falling to the 1B side on release.  Short arm action allowing the hand to work outside the elbow as it gets to the top of its arc.  Over-the-top slot.  Fastball flooded the zone, straight, at 73-81.  Breaking ball has some depth with 11/5 tilt and gradual break at 62-66.  Flashed feel for his change-up at 71.  Good feel for the zone and moving the baseball.  Pounded the zone throughout the bullpen.

Jacob Carter RHP / Crest, NC / 2019

Strong frame and long legs with a high waist.  Stands 6-foot-4, 170 pounds.  Frame will continue to handle strength with more maturation.  Fastball up to 84, sitting 81-82 with ease, playing catch hand pounding the zone throughout the bullpen.  Breaking ball is hard and sharp at times with 11/5 tilt at 70-72.  Good feel for landing the spin pitch.  Change-up is straight with deception out of the hand at 74-76.  Simple delivery with a stable head over the rubber.  Average leg kick, remaining level and in-line.   Lands on-line with a slightly closed toe.  Average back side leads to some extension, finishing through his target.  Clean arm swing with a high-3/4 release and some hand speed.  Arm should continue to grow with this setup.

Clay Stanley RHP / 3B / J. H. Rose, NC / 2019

Average frame with strength present at 6-foot, 195 pounds.  Showed feel for three pitches, attacking the zone throughout the bullpen.  Simple delivery from the 1B side of the rubber.  Small rocker to an average leg kick to the bottom of the chest.  Slow tempo quickens as the hands break to a long arm swing and high-3/4 release.  Above average arm speed.  Lands across his line, square, fighting for extension as the body pulls to the 1B side.  Fastball has run at 80-81.  Breaking ball fights for rotation and an 11/5 tilt.  Good arm speed, ranging 72-73.  Change-up has fade and deception and is probably the second pitch at this time, sitting 73-76.  Good arm speed and aggression on the change.

Matthew Upchurch LHP / OF / Lincoln Charter, NC / 2019

Athletic frame with room to continue to add strength, standing 6-foot, 170 pounds.  Easy delivery, staying over the rubber with ease after a leg kick to the top of the chest, loading the back side.  Medium arm swing with strength to foot strike.  High-3/4 release with good arm speed present.  Swing the font leg to a foot strike on-line, and a slightly open front toe.  Some uphill leverage in the shoulders.  Fastball at 76-78, touching 81.  Some run when on the arm side.  Erratic early, but dialed in the zone as the bullpen progressed.  1/7 tilt to the breaking ball at 65-67.  Consistently down in the zone, thrown with some aggression.  Slight hump out of the hand.  Change-up was erratic but thrown with hand speed and deception.  Sitting 67-68, arm side run is present.
