Earlier this month, PBR was invited to attend the team workout of Team Rawlings at South Meck High School.  Head Coach, Brian Hoop, had several of his 2017, 2018, and 2019 players in attendance.  The team went through a full workout that included individual offensive and defensive time, around a pro-style workout format as well.

Below are player notes from the workout.  PBR will continue to be out this fall to watch and evaluate games, workouts, and showcases.  If your team is conducting a workout and would like PBR in attendance, please reach out to our Director of Scouting, Brandon Hall.

TEAM RAWLINGS - PLAYER NOTES

Jalen Austin, RHP, Forsyth Country Day, NC (2019)
Tall build with long limbs.  Worked from a high-3/4 slot with a whippy arm and an easy delivery.  Flashes athleticism with delivery while landing slightly across his line creating some deceptive cross-fire.  Fastball ranged 75-77 with a feel for his arm-side.  The Curveball touched 64, and was a bit inconsistent with its action while he fell off to his glove side.  Change-up was raw but flashed potential, sitting 66-68.  Offensively, Austin pre-set with an uphill angle in his shoulders and loaded down and in with his hands, creating some barrel awareness issues.  He ran a 7.65 in the sixty, on a soft surface.

Chase Bishop, C, Lake Norman HS, NC (2017)
Average build with a strong lower half in the 5-foot9, 175 pound frame.  Pop times ranged from 1.98 – 2.03, showing accuracy from a loose, efficient, short arm stroke.  From the crouch, the throws registered 75mph.  Offensively, Bishop works with a vertical bat and short stride.  A direct path to the ball flashed barrels during the BP rounds.  When on the barrel, back spin and some carry was produced.  Exit velocity topped at 84mph.  Ran a 8.19 sixty on a wet outfield.

Jed Bryant, C, North Davidson, NC (2017)
Physically strong, with quickness in his body.  Ran a 6.91 on a soft outfield surface.  Behind the plate, pop times ranged 2.06-2.25 with velocity from the crouch topping at 75mph.  Exchanges occurred high and the arm action had some effort.  Offensively, setup with a wide stance, leading to a small stride.  When on time, extension occurred, producing some power.  Exit velocity topped at 87mph.

Charlie Chason, C, Hough HS, NC (2019)
Pull approach offensively with quick hands.  Working from an athletic setup and average stride, showed aggressiveness throughout BP.  Exit velocity topped at 77, but the frame should add strength.  Behind the plate, pop times ranged 2.17-2.23.  Feet became long at times, hurting accuracy.  Positional velocity topped at 73 from behind the dish.  Ran a 7.93 on a soft surface.

Trey Carter, OF, Magna Vista HS, VA (2019)
Long athletic build.  Long arm action worked to a high-3/4 slot, topping at 77 on throws from the outfield.  Loose and easy, the front side did clear early causing some accuracy issues.  Offensively, showed some feel for the barrel.  Exit velocity topped at 80mph.  Ran a 7.60 sixty, on a soft outfield.

Adam Dempski, OF, Hough HS, NC (2018)
Strong, mature build with some strength in the 5-10, 175 pound frame.  Ran a 7.22 on a soft outfield surface.  Showed increased barrel awareness working with a small stride and limited load.  Good balance and head discipline created some ease with a swing that registered an exit velocity of 87mph.  From the outfield, there is some effort in the high-3/4 throwing action.  Top throw hit 78mph.

Alex Dunn, C, Mt. Tabor HS, (2018)
Loose actions created pop times ranging 2.10-2.50 and a top throw of 72mph from the crouch.  Feet became long at times hurting some accuracy.  Offensively, worked with a leg kick into a swing that emphasized extension and pull side.  A little rotational, the exit velocity topped at 73mph.  Ran a 7.76 sixty on a soft surface.

Ryan Gusto, RHP, Providence HS, NC (2017)
An intriguing build with long limbs and some quick twitch in the body.  Ran a 7.10 on a soft outfield.  Switch hitter that starts open on both sides and strides to even.  More pull conscious on the right side with a smooth load and aggressive demeanor.  From the left side, the aggression stays but the swing plays with more uphill.  Registered a top end exit velocity of 87.

Archie Herring, 2B, Northern Guilford, NC (2020)
Quick twitch and athletic.  High waisted with a thin build that will add strength as he ages.  Ran a 6.85 on a soft outfield surface.  Flashed decent actions on the infield, with clean exchanges flashing quickness in his hands.  There is some effort in the throwing action that may clean with strength.   Topped at 72mph across the infield.  Switch hitter that is ahead on the right side.  Open stance, strides to closed and has an aggressive back-side through the ball.  From the left side, a vertical stance and high hands lead to a loop through the zone.  Top exit velocity of 81mph.

Jake Hylinski, RHP, Clover HS, SC (2019)
Works from an over-the-top slot with a long arm swing, from a repeat-able delivery.  Fastball topped at 79, sitting 77-79.  Both offspeed pitches were featured in the zone.  The curveball ranged 59-63 with an early 11/5 action.  The change sat 70-71.  Offensively, works from a tall stance with a load to a flat bat.  Finished with high hands through a rotational lower half.  Ran his sixty in 8.49 on a soft surface.

Jackson Lowery, LHP/1B, North Gaston HS, NC (2019)
Mature build.  High-3/4 slot working with an easy arm swing that loads the scap towards the top.  Strike thrower.  Early sink on fastballs to his arm side.  Fastball sat 77-79.  The change-up flashed average to above at 66-68, with confidence and feel.  Curveball lacked some handspeed and rolled through the zone, ranging 60-62.  Showed a long arm action from first base, topping at 77 across the infield.  Hands were stiff at times, but he did catch the ball, and showed feel around the bag.  Sixty time came in at 8.37 on a soft outfield.

Matthew Lucas, C, Metrolina Christian, NC (2019)
Catcher that showed consistency across his throws.  5-foot-8, 175 pounds, with pop times ranging 2.11-2.15, and the velocity topped at 70mph from the crouch.  Worked easy, with accuracy, utilizing a strong arm swing and short footwork.  Offensively, presented a strong lower half, from an average build.  Load to a vertical position with a small stride.  Average batspeed allows from some power projection when on the barrel.  Exit velocity topped at 83mph.  Registered a 8.08 sixty on a soft surface.

Bryce Masters, LHP/OF, Hough HS, NC (2018)
Tall, lanky build creates some intrigue.  Long arm swing that pauses at the bottom works to a high-3/4 slot.  There is some stiffness, but he showed an ability to command the strike zone throughout the bullpen.  Fastball sat 71-74.  Change-up presented fade and deception, ranging 69-71.  The curveball rolled through the zone, but did work within the zone at 63. Offensively, works with an aggressive stride and can get a little hookey with the swing as it sweeps through the zone.  Exit velocity topped at 84mph.  Ran a 7.64 sixty on a soft surface.  Registered a positional velocity of 72mph from the outfield.

Dylan Mauldin, OF, Ashbrook, NC (2019)
Tall, lanky build.  Offensively sets up with a tall base and loads to a vertical bat with a slight rush.  At times a little hookey as the bat sweeps through the zone.  Registered an exit velocity of 87mph, showing strength and potential future power.  Ran a 7.19 sixty on a soft surface.  From the outfield, registered 82mph throwing with a loose, high-3/4 slot, with a long arm swing.

Brody McCullough, SS, Sheets Memorial Christian, NC (2018)
Lean build that produced a flat swing from the right side.  An early strider, the batspeed was at least average.  Exit velocity tested at 81mph.  From the infield, showed an ability to catch the baseball with fluid hands while playing through most ground balls.  A long arm action worked to a positional velocity of 79mph.  Registered a 7.54 in his sixty.

Hunter Macomber, RHP, AC Reynolds, NC (2018)
An over-the-top slot that fights some uphill tilt in his shoulders at balance creates some depth on fastball when located at the bottom of the zone.  Fought to control the up/down direction of fastball at times, but generally around the glove.  Fastball topped at 81.  Change-up flashed as at least average, sitting 73-75.  Breaking ball ranged 67-68 and was inconsistent, lacking spin at times.  Registered a sixty time of 7.76 on a soft surface.

Cade McGahan, RHP/SS, Hough HS, NC (2019)
Listed at 5-foot-11, 165 pounds working from a high-3/4 slot with a long arm swing and a slight hook of the hand at the bottom of the arm path.  Fastball touched 74.  Athletic delivery, with a feel for spinning his curveball.  The breaker sat 65-66.  Change-up presented some fade and feel, sitting 68-73.  On the infield, McGahan flashed above arm strength for his class, working 79mph across the infield, from a high-3/4 slot with a long arm swing.  Footwork was ok, while the hands lacked some fluidity receiving ground balls.  Offensively topped at 80mph on the exit velocity and ran a 7.44 sixty on a soft surface.

Austin Mitchell, RHP/SS, North Gaston, NC (2018)
Good presence on the bump.  Works from a high-3/4 slot with a strong, loose, arm swing, generating a quick hand and allowing for future growth.  Fastball sat 80-84 and looked to ride to the glove.  Change-up flashed average to above, ranging 73-75, with feel and slight fade.  Curveball sat 67-69.  Switch-hitter that worked from a tall, loose setup from both sides.  A simple approach and flat swing produced barrels from the right side.  The swing tends to sweep from the left side, but is still athletic.  Exit velocity topped at 83mph from the right side.  On the infield, Mitchell displayed quick hands, athleticism and an arm with carry from a short arm action.   Registered 81mph across the infield.  Ran his sixty in 7.50 on a soft surface.

Seth Morgan, SS, Northside Christian Academy, NC (2017)
Tall stance with a vertical bat led to a pull conscious BP and showed a quick, whippy bat.  Flashed power potential, registering 88mph on his exit velocity. From the infield, there is some effort in his hands and an average arm works from a high-3/4 slot with some effort.  Across the infield, topped at 76mph.  Ran his sixty in 7.50 on a soft surface

Nick Neal, 1B/OF, Southwest Guilford, NC (2019)
A monster that flashes athleticism and feel.  Working from a tall stance, with high hands, loads slightly down and in.  Wants to work slightly up hill through the baseball with looseness.  Future power is projectable, but the front side is leaving him at times right now.  Quickness is present, but strength plays ahead of quickness now.  Exit velocity topped at 92mph.  From the outfield, the arm is a little stiff working from slots that range low-3/4 to high-3/4, with a bit of a slingers action.  Lacked accuracy, while topping at 71mph.  Ran his sixty in 7.91 on a soft surface.

Jason Odem, LHP/1B, Forestview, NC (2018)
Big body with some feel on the mound.  High-3/4 slot with looseness and great rhythm, allowing for advanced feel for the zone early in his bullpen.  Fastball ranged 74-75 with an average at least change ranging 63-65.  The change was straight and flooded the zone.  Curveball was soft and inconsistent at 55-58.  The left-handed hitter showed some barrel awareness with a whippy bat.  Exit velocity reached 90mph.  At first base, flashed 75mph across the infield, with a shorter arm action.  Hands worked ok, when the feet were in position.  Registered a 8.23 on his sixty on a soft outfield.

Jordan Pendley, RHP, AC Reynolds, NC (2018)
Working from a high-3/4 slot with a short arm action.  Simple delivery this he repeats.  There is some effort through the release point as the fastball topped at 78.  The curveball sweeps through the zone, with early action, ranging 61-64.  Change-up sat 68-71.  Flashed feel for both offspeed pitches and the ability to fill the zone with them.  Offensively, the right handed hitter starts open and strides to even with some aggression.  With a vertical bat, he showed some barrel awareness and head discipline.  Ran a 7.94 sixty on a soft surface.

Tyler Roberts, OF, Davie County HS, NC (2017)
An athletic build that showed strength throughout the workout.  Simple setup in the box, led to a gap-to-gap approach.  Registered 85mph on the exit velocity test.  From the outfield, topped at 88mph from a high-3/4 slot with a long arm action.  Ran his sixty in a 7.51 on a soft outfield surface.

Michael Shelton, SS, North Davidson, NC (2019)
Left-handed hitter working with a small stride to produce some whip through the zone.  At times a little long, or hookey, there was consistent barrel contact.  Exit velocity topped at 74mph.  From shortstop, flashed average feet and hands with clean exchanges working into a top slot that registered 67mph across the infield.  Ran a 7.70 on a soft outfield.

Carson Simpson, SS, North Davidson, NC (2018)
Right handed hitter with a quick bat.  Tall setup that leads to a small dive and aggressive back side, produced a direct path to the ball and backspin.  Exit velocity topped at 74mph.  Will need to improve his barrel awareness.  On the infield, loose feet and athletic actions overshadowed some stiffness in his hands.  Carried a positional velocity of 79mph.  Ran his sixty in 7.54 on a soft surface.

Mason Stickney, OF/RHP, Parkwood HS, NC (2018)
An intriguing athlete with strength and quickness in a thin frame.  Topped at 93mph on his exit velocity test.  Utilizes a wide setup and no stride, from the right side.  At times the swing sweeps the zone, but there is quickness with the bat.  Arm strength showed from the outfield and on the bump, touching 87mph from both.  On the mound, it is raw.  Working mostly from a stretch position, with a slide step, he sat 81-85, touching 87 when working out of the wind-up, something that is new.  An over-the-top slot and quick hand lead to some effort throughout the delivery.  Command is lacking at times and the offspeed stuff will need to improve.  The curveball was inconsistent ranging 68-70, while the change-up sat 70-74.  The recorded sixty of 7.25 was run on a soft outfield surface.

Jaron Tate, OF, Hickory Ridge, NC (2018)
Right handed hitter with a tall stance and vertical bat, works from a slightly open stance and strides to even.  Aggressive and loose with good batspeed.  Registered an exit velocity of 85mph.  Showed barrel awareness throughout BP.  From the outfield, topped at 81mph with a long arm action working to an over-the-top slot.  Ran a 7.26 sixty on a soft outfield.

Jacob Thompson, 1B, Home Schooled, NC (2017)
Power potential from the right handed hitter is evident.  Registered an exit velocity of 97mph while hitting several tape measure shots in BP.  Strong and balanced from the right side, Thompson dives a little with his small stride and tends to lean with his upper half, over the plate causing a quick rotational emphasis that leads to some barrel awareness issues.  At first base, flashed good hands around the bag.  Works with some effort while throwing from a high-3/4 slot and long arm action that topped at 75mph across the infield.  Registered a sixty of 7.90 on a soft surface.

Chad Treadway, C, AC Reynolds HS, NC (2018)
Switch hitter that creates batspeed from both sides.  Both swings are geared up hill and to the pull side creating some top spin at times.  The right side is more consistent with looseness and extension.  Exit velocity topped at 86mph.  Behind the plate, Treadway possesses plus accuracy and good carry on his throws to second.  Pop times ranged from 1.98-2.07, while sitting at 75mph from the crouch.  Sixty was timed at 7.76 on the soft outfield surface.

Justin Wilkins, C, Hough HS, NC (2018)
Thin frame that can add strength, listed at 5-10, 165 pounds.  Showed a loose arm with pop times ranging from 2.28-2.39, while topping at 74mph from the crouch.  Offensively, the right handed hitter tends to get a little long early, sweeping the bat through the zone.  As he shortened down, the barrel came into play more.  Registered a top end exit velocity of 76mph.  Ran his sixty in 7.44, on a soft surface.
