Ultimate Performance Scout Day & Queen City Prospect ID - Pitcher Analysis

Brandon Hall
North Carolina Director of Scouting

Prep Baseball Report of North Carolina began its summer event schedule by running a PBR Scout Day with Ultimate Performance at their beautiful facility in Matthews, NC.  The indoor facility allowed the players attending the showcase to run a full 40, on a laser timer, throw from their defensive positions and hit in a 60’ x 80’ cage so evaluators could see the ball fly.  Along with the players from the Ultimate Performance program, PBR ran an open ID event, the Queen City Pre-Summer Prospect ID.

A total of 33 players participated in the scout day.  Eight primary pitchers threw controlled bullpens toward the end of the evening.  While the pitchers were in control of their sequencing, PBR was able to dictate some of the bullpen to ensure each arm was evaluated in the wind-up and stretch.  4 of the 8 arms touched 83 or better with their fastball.  Of the 8 arm, their ages ranged from 2022 grads up to 2019 grads.

Notes Ultimate Performance / Queen City Scout Day:

Pitcher Evaluation

Vance Barnhill RHP / 3B / Providence, NC / 2021

Athletic build at 5 feet 9, 145 pounds. Still maturing.  Stretch only working on-line with a long arm swing to a high-¾ slot.  Good extension. Loose hips. Some effort through release, landing stable on the front side.  Fastball ranged 77-81. Erratic command settled some as bullpen progressed. Breaking ball may develop into a weapon.  Sitting 64-65 now, it spins well with 11/5 tilt and gradual break from a near fastball hand and arm speed. Change-up got out hard at times, straight with deception in the arm speed, touching 76.
Hits from the right side using a balanced setup and short stride with his hands going from low to high during his load. Maintains balance during his swing with a shorter path to the ball. Works downhill to the ball at times but does look to get good extension out front. Looks to stay gap to gap and shows the ability to line balls out. Exit velocity peaked at 82 mph and should improve with added strength. Shows good actions on the infield with soft hands, fluid feet, and clean, quick exchanges. Shows athleticism on the slow roller and the ability to throw from different slots with his arm topping at 81 mph across the diamond. Also, recorded a 5.53 in the 40-yard dash.

Luke Barrow RHP / OF / Wesleyan Christian, NC / 2020

Wide shoulder and athletic build at 6-foot-1, 175 pounds.  Still room to add strength in the coming years. Projects well.  Filled up the strike zone with good tempo, extension, and a feel for an advanced slider.  Fastball sat 84-86, with occasional arm side run. Slider has depth and tight spin at 77-78, with feel.  Sharp and late, the slider attacks the zone with fastball arm speed. Flashes average feel for a change at 80.  Some fade as the arm slows slightly. Works level and on-line as a quick arm gets to a high-¾ slot. Regular effort, lands in an athletic position.

Brady Davidson RHP / 1B / Providence, NC / 2020

Lanky 6-foot-4, 180 pounder.  Still growing into his frame. Short strider has a long arm swing working through some stiffness to an over-the-top slot.  Level through the delivery, the rhythm is a little choppy, but lands on-line and square. Fastball is around the zone at 71-73, occasionally cutting the pitch.  Change-up has arm side run at times sitting 67-69. Arm slows slightly. Breaking ball touched 61 with gradual 10/4 tilt, attacking the zone.

JD Lewis RHP / OF / Parkwood, NC / 2020

Average, athletic frame, standing 6-foot, 175 pounds with some strength present.  Athleticism suggests the ceiling is still in front of him. Flashes three pitches in the zone, working with extension and good rhythm.  Fastball has arm side run when on the arm side. Sat 81-84. Easy effort from a high-¾ slot. 11/5 tilt on a breaking ball that is sharp at times, with depth, ranging 67-68.  Change-up has fade at 76-77, maintaining most of his fastball arm speed. Average leg kick, looseness in the hips. On-line and square at landing. Shoulder work level throughout.

Tyler Mallow RHP / 2B / Independence, NC / 2022

Small frame with a lot of maturity still ahead of him.  Stands 5-foot-1, 110 pounds. Solid over the rubber with a good arm action getting to a high-¾ slot.  Arm speed will improve with strength. Fastball sat 63-65. Fastball has run to the arm side. Shows a feel for the change-up at 54-57.  Arm slows and the change is pushed a bit, but there is sink. Breaking ball rolls out of the hand at 55 with early 11/5 action. Some rhythm, working with some uphill leverage in his shoulders out of balance, lands on-line and square.  As body continues to mature, he is setup to make quick gains with a clean delivery.

Cooper McKeehan LHP / OF / Weddington High School, NC / 2019

Average build with some athleticism in a 6-foot-2, 180 pound build.  Frame can continue to handle added strength. Better than average arm speed with a long swing to an over-the-top slot.  Some effort fighting for the slot on fastball but seems more relaxed, and quicker, on breaking ball and change-up. Delivery rhythm can get choppy, but he stays level, working in-line and landing slightly across his body.  Fastball is straight at 80-83, around the zone. Breaking ball is sharp, late, and with depth. 12/6 tilt at 67-69, it could become a power breaking ball as arm speed continues to improve. Change-up arm speed is near that of fastball with the pitch sitting 75-77.  Occasional fade and shows a feel for the zone with it.

Carson Swaim RHP / 1B / Oak Grove, NC / 2020

Strength is present in a 5-foot-10, 175 pound frame, with a strong lower half.  Commanded the down zone, flashing late arm side run on the fastball. Fastball sat 73-77 with decent angle.  Long arm swing gets to a high-¾ slot. Stable at balance, some rhythm through the delivery, staying level and in-line.  Lands on-line and square. Change-up ranged 66-71 with late fade. A chance to be used as a weapon, the hand speed and movement will create issues.  Attacks the zone with the change. Breaking ball has depth when thrown with good hand speed. Ranging 64-69, the curveball at 67-69 had late 11/5 depth.  At 63-64, the pitch has gradual action with a slight hump out of the hand.

Owen Tappy RHP / 2B / Providence Day School, NC / 2019

Average frame at 6-foot-1, 175 pounds.  Advanced feel and a solid 3 pitch repertoire.  Fastball should grow with strength, sitting 80-83 with run.  Pounded the down zone and run should create issues for hitters.  Advanced feel for a mature breaking ball with slurve type action at 69-71.  Located in the down zone with ease, the spin has power breaking ball potential with some depth as it sweeps away from right-handed hitters.  Change-up adds a third option at 73-75. In the zone, with slight fade. Stable over the rubber, with a slight coil in the upper body. Smooth rhythm working level, landing slightly closed.  Finishes with athleticism. Long, loose arm swing. Quick hand to a high-¾ slot. Gets extension through the target. Repeats the delivery and pounds the zone.
