Winter Kickoff ID: Quick Hitters-Pitchers

Matt Payne
Director of Scouting, PBR of NC

PBR North Carolina held its Winter Kickoff ID on Sunday February 14th in Maiden, NC. The event was held at the Athletes Lab Performance Center. Athletes lab is a spacious facility that has multiple batting cages, a pitching area, weight room, and a fully open cage at 120ft x 100ft. It provides kids with a great place to train.

Position players were able to run a laser timed 30, take batting practice in the open cage with Trackman and Blast recording ball flight and swing analytics. Position players were also able to go through a defensive workout being graded on their athleticism, footwork, hands, and arm strength. Pitchers threw a controlled bullpen with Trackman measuring ball flight analytics.

Below we take a look at some notes from the day as well as statistical leaders from the Winter Kickoff ID.

Quick Hitters-Pitchers

Ethan Brittain, SS/RHP, 2025

5-foot-9, 140-pound frame with plenty of room for maturation ahead. Attacked the zone with his fastball at 76-79 mph. Fastball had an average Induced Vertical Movement of 21.3 inches. Landed his breaking ball for strikes with depth and 11/5 shape at 66-67 mph. Breaking ball produced an average spin rate of 2378 rpm. Flashed feel for his changeup at 69-70 mph. Maintains arm speed on his changeup creating sinking action. Arm has quickness through a high ¾ slot and should see jumps as his frame matures.

Jeffrey Dobson, SS/RHP, 2023

Athleticism present in a thin frame at 5-foot-11, 150-pounds. Fastball worked at 77-80 mph using a low ¾ slot while also mixing in an over the top slot. Fastball averaged 15.6 inches of horizontal movement from the low ¾ slot. Has a feel for his changeup with fade and sink at 68-73 mph. Average feel for his curveball with sweeping action at 65-68 mph. There is some quickness to his arm that could allow the velocity to increase with added strength.

Julien Peissel, RHP/SS, 2022

6-foot-2, 178-pound frame with broad shoulders and present athleticism. Posted the top bolt of the day with his fastball at 90 mph. Fastball produced an average spin rate of 2221 rpm and an average horizontal movement of 9.5 inches. Above average changeup with run and sink at 76-77 mph. Creates deception maintaining fastball arm speed. Breaking ball has a small across break at 73-74 mph with an average spin rate of 2524 rpm. Fluid tempo to his delivery with a short arm swing, loading the scap, and a quick arm through a high ¾ slot. Athleticism and arm quickness suggest a higher ceiling in the future.

Brendan Pouliot, RHP/1B, 2022

Projectable frame at 6-foot-4, 185-pounds. Just over a year removed from Tommy John surgery he impressed during his bullpen with his fastball in the zone at 86-88 mph. Advanced feel for his changeup with arm side run and sink at 79-80 mph. Changeup should create weak contact and swing and miss. Breaking ball worked at 69-71 mph with an 11/5 shape that he is still getting a feel for. Slow tempo to his delivery with a compact arm stroke and arm quickness using a high ¾ slot. Should be a follow for the spring and summer with jumps likely to come.
