Oakland, CA - A wide ranging group of players made their way to Laney College for the Bay Area Open, with players representing the 2020-2024 grad classes taking their shot at showcasing their skills. Players went through a pro-style workout running 60's, taking BP and showcase defensive skills while pitchers threw a bullpen from the main mound.

Middle Infielders

2020 2B/SS Michael LaVigne - Colfax - 5-6, 135, R/R
Small frame, compact build with higher waist and tight muscles; full effort runner getting to full speed quickly (7.46 60yd). Slightly crouched with even hands that lift as he lifts his front foot transferring weight over the back hip; pops the back hip staying balanced in swing. Barrel is compat and quick working on windmill up through the zone with two-hand high finish (82 EV); stays tight with the hands as he worked the middle of the field with line drives. Wide base when working through the baseball in the middle of the field with good footwork moving in time. Compact, high release arm fitting best at 2B (73 MPH).

2020 SS/2B Jacob Campbell - Pinole Valley - 5-9, 165, R/R
Medium full frame with lower waist and sloped shoulder using short, brisk stride (7.56 60yd). Tall and wide with high hands and a high back elbow, pulling bat knob down early showing controlled forward movement as he keeps head on baseball hitting over strong front side. Hands are direct with loose wrists keeping flat bat through the zone; lots of line drives and hard ground balls through the middle and oppo side of the field (90 EV). Good feet for the middle of the infield with some body control and feet working around the baseball; glove hand is loose and soft picking the ball out of the dirt with late flip. Compact arm with high release having ability to keep the ball on the bag (75 MPH).

2020 SS/P Nicholas Gonsalves - Dougherty Valley - 5-11, 160, R/R
Medium frame, long through the middle with length in the limbs as well; space in frame to take on more strength. Utilizes shorter stride (7.61 60yd) with high posture. Tall, narrow posture with slightly opened stance having high toe lift and turn with hands having pronounced lift. Hands are direct and steep working to backspin the baseball with quick lift upon two-hand finish (84 EV); worked in the middle of the field and pull gap. Moves well in the field with the ability to open his hips and drop step to add range using his soft glove to funnel back to the middle; loose arm compact with longer release able to make throws from different angles (76 MPH). Liked the frame and defensive skills with growth available in the bat.

2021 SS/2B Dominic Giuffre - Archbishop Mitty - 5-9, 155, R/R
Medium frame, compact build with strength showing in the upper half; fluid stride through run (7.40 60yd). Keeping high hands and high elbows showing slight crouch in balanced stance, Giuffre uses bigger knee tuck as hands pull down and back tight to the body; strong ability to work behind the baseball hitting over a firm front side. Barrel is compact and quick showing strength in the wrists and hands with flashes of leverage to drive the ball (90 EV); consistent attack to the oppo gap with hard contact and line drives that have some carry. Strong defensive actions with quick feet being compact in his stride as he stays under himself to cover ground both ways and make plays on the move; compact arm with flick style release (76 MPH). First look and liked what we saw; chance for skills to keep growing especially the arm strength to stick on the left side of the diamond.
