Las Vegas Fall Open: Quick Hits

The Las Vegas Fall Open is in the books and now we move into the post event coverage, breaking down and highlighting the standouts from the event with Quick Hits, Stat Leaderboards, Blast Motion Leaderboards and Pitching Leaderboards. The immediate takeaway from this past weekends event was impressive overall offensive performance that saw a number of balls leave the yard with multiple 100 mph Exit Velocities and mature, line drive filled rounds coming from players in each high school class.

At the Las Vegas Fall Open, we retrieved a significant amount of data on each player including: 60 Times measured by Swift Syncro, Batting Practice measured by TrackMan, Catch Pop Time and Velocity, Outfield Evaluation and Velocity, Infield Evaluation and Velocity and Pitcher Bullpens analyzed and assessed by TrackMan. We pride ourselves on utilizing the latest technology in the game to provide the most accurate data for both the player and those recruiting/evaluating the player.

We begin our post event of highlight some of the top overall performances from the Las Vegas Fall Open with the Quick Hits.

Las Vegas Fall OPEN: QUICK HITS

Alex Jang SS / 2B / Palo Verde, NV / 2025

The 2025 middle infielder put together one of the events top overall performances, achieving new personal bests and leading a number of categories including Swift 60 Time (7.00) and Infield Velocity (82 mph) which could be contributed to his physical strength gains made in recent months. His sturdy build helped him at the plate especially where his Hand Speed, Bat Speed and Rotational Acceleration all improved which translated to a loud batting practice session that flashed his pull side power potential with more projected to come. Defensively, he showed off improved lateral range while maintaining the fluidity that he has shown in the past with the ability to change arm slots to maintain those actions. Jang will have to sit out this Spring as he reclassed into the 2025 Class, but is a player to keep on your radar heading into Summer 2023.

Robin Vergara SS / 3B / Basic Academy, NV / 2024

The switch-hitting infielder came into the Las Vegas Open with a previous history of producing standout performances at PBR Florida events and he continued that this past weekend. Vergara lead off the offensive portion of the event with arguably the most impressive round, showing off his ability to use the whole field and a compact, repeatable stroke from the left side, then switch over to the right-handed side and did the same thing. The obvious maturity at the plate and success he has had this Fall has him primed for his breakout junior campaign at Basic Academy. Defensively, his present foot speed does limit some range which slots him into the 3B position, but the actions to and through the ball could allow him to hold down a middle infield spot, especially at the high school level. Vergara is an intriguing 2024 with present strength and the tools to go with with it and we expect a big 2023 out of him.

Vandon Welter C / OF / Palo Verde, NV / 2025

A more physical Welter made his presence known at the Las Vegas Open, where the 2025 catcher/outfielder lead the event with a 97.2 mph TrackMan Exit Velocity. The Junior Future Games alum has seen significant improvements in his game on both sides of the ball. Offensively, he took no time at all to show off that his previous power potential has begun to transition into present power as he left the yard to left field during his round. Most of his power is geared towards the middle pull side, but he did produce line drives to the big part of the yard during his round as well. Defensively, he showed off his athleticism coming through the ball with fluidity into a simple, shuffle-throw while leading the event in Outfield Velocity at 82 mph. Along with his outfield performance, he also put together an impressive performance behind the plate earning the events bests in Catcher Pop Time (1.96) and Catcher Velocity (74 mph). 

Tyler Straily LHP / OF / Foothill, NV / 2025

The sophomore southpaw put together the top bullpen session of the event with a projectable three pitch mix that we expect to only improve as his velocity continues to trend in the right direction. His fastball currently sits in the 79-82 mph range with some arm side action that he commanded well throughout his bullpen session. The secondary mix consisted of a curveball / changeup mix that showed potential with is changeup being the pitch he showed more feel for with an ability to locate repeated in the zone while his curveball is still a development pitch that has a spin rate well below his fastball that means he has more in the tank with that pitch. Physical strength gains will play a significant role in Straily's progress over the next few years as he has the delivery and frame to make it happen.

Gavin Lajda C / OF / Las Vegas , NV / 2023

Lajda quietly put together an impressive showing on both sides of the ball with improved actions behind the plate with added strength in his hands and forearms that allowed him to handle each pitcher he caught during the bullpen session. Along with his improved receiving, he produced personal bests with a 70 mph Catcher Velocity as well as a 1.98 PBR Verified Pop Time. At the plate, he showed off his ability to used the whole field with consistent barrels that had some lift through the zone and his 85.7 mph Average Exit Velocity proved his ability to produce hard contact. The Uncommitted senior is a player to keep an eye on heading into the Spring season.

Brenden Perry RHP / SS / Palo Verde, NV / 2023

The Palo Verde product came into the Las Vegas Fall Open after taking two years off of from the game and toed the rubber to produce the event's Top Fastball Velocity at 87.0 mph with more projected to come. His current delivery relies heavily on his athleticism as more of a thrower than a pitcher, leading the PBR Staff to believe their is much more in the tank than the mid-to-upper 80's that was on display this past weekend. Along with his developing delivery, his secondary mix is also a work in progress that flashes serious potential and will continue to improve has he gets more time on the mound and gains feel for the pitches. Perry will be an intriguing arm that could make a splash in the Palo Verde rotation this Spring.
