Mountain West Scout Day: Quick Hits

Brett Harrison
Nevada Scouting Director

The PBR Scout Days have become our way of kicking the year off with an event where players throughout Nevada are provided an opportunity to update their PBR Player Profiles with the base level information retrieved. From the PBR Scout Day, we are able to track players progess, highlight standout performances and begin the process of selecting the very best to represent Nevada at the 2022 Junior Future Games (2026/2027), the 2022 Future Games (2024/2025) or the 2022 West Coast Games (2023). Both high school programs and club organizations have an opportunity to provide their players with an exclusive Scout Day for players within their program.

This year, we will be adding the use of our TrackMan System to provide each player with the most accurate and relevant information from both hitting and pitching standpoint. Along with the TrackMan, we have rebranded our Open Scout Days in both Northern and Southern Nevada as the Northern Nevada Preseason ID and the Southern Nevada Preseason ID. These new event will provide the same opportunity as the exclusive Scout Days hosted by the high schools and club programs, as they will play a vital role in the selection of Team Nevada for the Summer of 2022.

During the Mountain West Scout Day, we retrieved an abundance of information on each player, including a Laser Timed 60, TrackMan Evaluated Batting Practice Session, Catcher Evaluation, Outfield Evaluation, Infield Evaluation and TrackMan Analyzed Pitcher Bullpens, that now lives in each players PBR Player Profile. The metrics retrieved help provide in-depth information on each player, but does not paint the entire picture of what they are capable of on the field. For younger players, this information collected is a way to assess your progress you have made in recent months, providing context for accurate projection in the years to come.

Today, we will be highlighting some of our first impressions from the event with our Quick Hits

Mountain West: QUICK HITS

_____________________________________________________________________

+ Lucas Boesen, Bishop Gorman (2022) - The recent CSN commit showcased an improved mix and we feel he his just now starting to scratch the surface of where he could be with heavy reliance on his athleticism in his delivery, the projected mechanical polish coming in the next couple months could see not only his velocity continue to climb, but the effectiveness of his secondary arsenal. His fastball topped out at an event best 87.6 mph via TrackMan, but has been seen up to a PBR Verified 89 mph in recent weeks. The biggest takeaway from the metrics received at the Mountain West Scout Day is the Spin Rate he showcased on his secondary arsenal with his breaking ball showing an Average Spin of 1898 RPM, a number that relative to his Average Fastball Spin Rate of 2061 RPM leads you to believe that that pitch which has already shown some potential plus action, still has a ton of room to improve.

+ Connor Apeceche, Green Valley (2024) - The Nevada representative at the 2021 Future Games continued to prove why he is a Top 10 player in Nevada's 2024 Class. His added physical strength has helped turn his power potential to present power, leaving the yard to the pull side during his TrackMan analyzed Batting Practice Session. Following his loud BP round, he threw an event best 1.94 Pop Time showing off his improved footwork behind the plate as well as +5 MPH jump in his Catcher Velocity, now up to 74 mph which was also an event best. Though he is just a sophomore, Apeceche is expected to play a significant role in the success of Green Valley this Spring both behind the plate and at the plate.

+ Nicky Garritano, Green Valley (2022) - Arguably the top Uncommitted defender in Nevada's 2022 Class, Garritano has seen his game mirror his significant physical gains made over the past year. He is as sure handed as they come up the middle and has been so throughout his prep career, but now we are seeing his offensive game begin to shine through. A staple at the top of the Green Valley order, his improved confidence in his ability to drive the ball to both gaps has seen him trend over the past few months, especially, even flashing some pull side power in the Fall. A program looking for a high baseball IQ, lockdown defender up the middle and a bat that could either get things started or turn a lineup over, look no further than Nicky Garritano.

_____________________________________________________________________

+ Chaz McNelis, Green Valley (2023) - An Under the Radar bat in Nevada's 2023 Class, McNelis produced one of the top batting practice rounds of the day, living in the big part of the yard with some pull side power potential also on display. McNelis' bat has always been the best part of his game, but the biggest improvement made at the Mountain West Scout Day was on the defensive side of the ball, transitioning exclusively to the outfield, his improved arm action should allow his velocity to continue to trend in the right direction using his present athleticism that allows him to hold down a corner outfield spot with his event and personal best, 6.81 Laser Time 60 speed.

+ Trevor LaPres, Lake Mead Christian Academy (2023) - LaPres may have seen his stock rise the most after his performance at the Mountain West Scout Day. The small school product now stands at 6-foot-3, 170 pounds, earned a number personal bests that landed him at or near the top of each statistical category that applied to him, getting his day started with a 6.85 Laser Timed 60 Yard Dash. He then put together the most impressive batting practice session of the day, posting not only the event best 101.1 mph TrackMan Exit Velocity, but the Top Average TrackMan Exit Velocity at 89.5 mph, proving his ability to routinely find the barrel throughout is round. Expect to see LaPres making his way up the PBR Nevada Player Rankings coming out in February.
