Nevada Diamond Notes: Week Five
April 7, 2024
Each week, the Prep Baseball Nevada staff asks High School coaches across the State to fill out our Player/Pitcher of the Week questionnaire which helps us in our selection process of honoring the top performances. With all of the talent throughout Nevada, it can be difficult to just pinpoint one pitcher and positional player each week so our 'Diamond Notes' articles will serve the purpose of highlighting the top performances that were submitted by coaches.
Keep an eye on our social media accounts throughout the week as each Saturday we will send out the link to the questionnaire with all submissions due at 11:59PM on Sunday.
Below, we'll take a look at some of performances across the State over the past week.

NEVADA DIAMOND NOTES: WEEK FIVE
'25 RHP/OF James Whitaker (Bishop Gorman): The LSU commit got the start on Tuesday and dominated once again, going the distance for a complete shutout as Bishop Gorman toppled Foothill 7-0. The right-hander worked seven innings allowing no runs on three hits, no walks and struck out seven. Whitaker also chipped in offensively with three hits, including a double and a homerun. Over 34.1 innings this year, he's allowed just six earned runs with 42 strikeouts to 11 walks.
'25 SS Kyler Avila (Legacy): The uncommitted infielder was a top candidate for this week's Player of the Week as he hit for the cycle in Legacy's 17-2 win over Clark, the first cycle in school history. Beyond his massive game against Clark, Avila also picked up a pair of hits, including a double, in the Longhorns 10-1 win over Foothill. In total, Avila went 6-for-11 with a home run, triple, two doubles, three runs scored, six RBI and two HBP's. Legacy went 3-0 on the week to extend their record to 13-3 (2-0) and Avila was a major contributor.
'24 LHP Ammon Shaul (Shadow Ridge): The uncommitted senior put together his best performance of the year on Wednesday as he went 5.2 scoreless innings against Arbor View, guiding the Mustangs to an 8-0 win. The left-hander allowed just two hits and three walks, along with six strikeouts. Shaul was another finalist for Pitcher of the Week and Shadow Ridge has been rolling of late as they're 5-0-1 in their past six games.
'25 3B/RHP Mayson Au Young-Uwaine (Rancho): The uncommitted junior has been an offensive leader for Rancho all year long as he leads the team with a .431 batting average and made a case for Player of the Week with his eight hits and five extra-bases. He started the week with a three-hit game (two doubles) against Pinecrest Academy, then picked up a double and three RBI against Foothill and capped it off with a 4-for-4, two double and 5 RBI performance against Pinecrest once again. Rancho went 3-0 on the week, outscoring opponents 43-6 and Mayson was a driving force in the offense.
'24 RHP/1B Grayson Cooper (Yerington): The uncommitted senior put together one of the top two-way performances across the State this past week and was dominant on the mound as he made two appearances and didn't allow an earned run over 8.2 innings. The right-hander earned a complete-game win over Oasis Academy, allowing just three runs (0 ER) on six hits, no walks and 12 strikeouts in the 4-3 win. In total, he pitched 8.2 innings allowing four runs (0 ER), six hits, one walk and struck out 14. At the dish, Cooper went 5-for-10 with two doubles, two runs scored, four RBI and a walk as the Lions took two of three in the series against Oasis Academy.
'26 MIF Evan Noble (Shadow Ridge): The Houston commit continues to swing the bat well over the past month and has been a big part of Shadow Ridge's recent success. Noble picked up five total hits through three games this week, along with a pair of RBI in each game. In total, the Mustangs infielder went 5-for-11 with two doubles, two runs scored, six RBI and two walks.
'25 RHP/INF Nicolas Coogan (Liberty): The uncommitted 2025 took the mound for Liberty in a big spot on Wednesday against American Fork, one of Utah's top programs, and was dominant over three innings out of the bullpen. The Patriots right-hander entered the game trailing by one and worked three scoreless, allowing no hits and one walk, allowing the Liberty offense to regain the lead and ultimately win 5-3, earning the save. Impressive performance from the uncommitted junior against a high-quality offensive lineup.
'24 SS Konner Brown (Liberty): The Future Games/West Coast Games alum and Wabash Valley commit was seeing the ball well this past week as he batted .500 over four games and came through in several clutch moments. Brown's week was highlighted by a 3-for-3 performance against St. Rita (IL) with two doubles, three runs scored and a HBP.
'26 LHP/OF Jonathan Ramos (Rancho): The uncommitted underclassman came out of the bullpen for Rancho on Wednesday and held the Foothill offense in check over three innings, allowing the Rams to come back and secure a 7-6 win. The left-hander was sharp over three scoreless innings of work, allowing no hits, one walk and striking out 5.
'24 SS Brock Morrow (Shadow Ridge): The West Coast Games alum and uncommitted senior chipped in offensively this week as he picked up a knock in all three games he played. Morrow went 4-for-11 with a home run, two runs scored, two RBI and two walks. The Shadow Ridge product is the top uncommitted infielder still on the board in Nevada.
'25 INF/RHP Tyler Stosich (Legacy): The uncommitted junior got the start for Legacy on Thursday and put together 6.1 strong innings, limiting the Foothill offense to just one run. The right-hander didn't issue a walk while picking up five strikeouts. While he allowed nine hits, he did a great job of working out of jams throughout the night and stranding runners. Legacy would go on to win this one 10-1.
'25 1B/RHP Asa Briggs (Southeast Career Tech): The uncommitted 2025 was another top performing two-way player this past week as he picked up five hits at the dish and punched out ten over four innings on the mound. In SECTA's two blowout wins over Doral Academy, Briggs went 5-for-5 with a home run, two doubles, five runs scored, four RBI, a walk and HBP. On the mound, he worked four innings allowing just one run on six hits, one walk and ten strikeouts.
'26 INF/RHP Cole Schaffer (Spanish Springs): The uncommitted underclassman worked six innings for Spanish Springs, allowing one earned run on four hits while picking up six strikeouts. Spanish Springs went 3-1 on the week with wins over Churchill County and North Valleys, along with a split against Damonte Ranch.
'24 SS Louis Dion (Coronado): The Reinhardt University commit cracks this list for the second straight week as he picked up another three-hit game, this time against Damien (CA) as he went 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles in the 9-8 win. In total, Dion went 5-for-11 with three doubles, two runs scored, two RBI and four walks.
'25 OF Noah Kiley (Spanish Springs): Spanish Springs put together a strong week as they picked up three wins and Kiley was a top producer for the offence during that stretch. On the week, the uncommitted junior went 7-for-12 with a home run, triple, double, three RBI and a walk.
