THE BRACKET

2018 NYSPHSAA Baseball Championships Class A

The Coverage

PBR-NY Scouting Director (@CoachJed) will be there for the championship at NYSEG Stadium at 4pm on Saturday.

THE BREAKDOWN

Wantagh (Section 8)
Record: 24-2
Road to Binghamton: Defeated Rocky Point (Section 8) 4-2.
Key Contributors: Anthony D'Onofrio, Patrick Willix, Anthony Fontana
Semifinal Matchup: vs. Lakeland; 2pm @ Binghamton University
Prediction: Will Wantagh's recent postseason success be enough to get by the talented Vetrano? Runs will be at a premium, if they get some early they have a shot. Willix (Molloy Commit) has been getting it done both on the mound and at the plate. Furman Commit Fontana should get the ball in the semifinals, setting up a big time duel between southpaws.

Lakeland (Section 1)
Record:
16-9
Road to Binghamton:
 Defeated Cornwall (Section 9) 3-0.
Key Contributors: Joseph Vetrano
, Evan Berta, Andrew Croce, Leo Cummings
Semifinal Matchup:
vs. Wantagh; 2pm @ Binghamton University.
Prediction:
If Vetrano (2020 LHP/Boston College Commit) is on, they'll need to scratch out a few runs and play solid defense, he's allowed 3 hits total over his last 2 postseason starts. Offense needs to cash in on early opportunities unlike last week's 3-0 win over Cornwall. Berta, also a sophomore LHP will be the next arm available.

Queensbury (Section 2)
Record:
17-4
Road to Binghamton:
 Defeated East Syracuse-Minoa (Section 3)
Key Contributors: Noah Edwards, Jack Sylvia, Michael Guido
Semifinal Matchup: vs. Canandaigua; 5pm @ Binghamton University
Prediction:
Queensbury is a hungry bunch. Our favorite "barrel master" Mike Siano seems to always find a way to get a big hit. Both squads riding a late season hot hand.

Canandaigua Academy (Section 5)
Record: 20-4
Road to Binghamton: Defeated Maryvale (Section 6) 4-0.
Key Contributors: Michael Sculli, Cooper Crunick
Semifinal Matchup: vs. Queensbury; 5pm @ Binghamton University.
Prediction: Sculli has been dominant this postseason, if Canandaigua can get a few runs to work with theycould cruise into the finals.

Our Thoughts

"This bracket is more wide open then the others. The Wantagh-Lakeland matchup could easily be a 1-0 and/or extra inning affair. One big hit or a defensive miscue could be the difference. Good chance the eventual state champion comes from that bracket. Canandaigua should sneak by Queensbury but will have a tough matchup one way or the other. Wantagh prevails in the end."
