Scout Blog: Rockland County HS Workout

As we continue to canvas the state, we popped in on an open workout at Nyack HS in Rockland County last Wednesday night. Several players grabbed our attention and became "blog worthy". Let's take a look:

Familiar Faces

Nathaniel Guillen 3B / 2B / North Rockland , NY / 2019

Rangy 6-foot-0 170 pound build; throws held carry from the OF. Projectable on the mound as arm works in the 81-83 MPH range with cut. CB checks in with 11-to-5 action at 66 MPH and he flashed a down action change up at 73 MPH. Command will need some fine tuning but there is plenty of upside ahead.

Joe Giudice C / 1B / Albertus Magnus, NY / 2020

6-foot-1 195 catcher with some juice in the bat. Arm held it’s carry and pop times were improved from when we last saw him at our Long Island preseason event.

Darian Almonte 2B / SS / Tappan Zee , NY / 2019

Slight frame at 5-foot-8 149 pounds; shows quick hands/release, ranges well. Arm is average and projects best at 2B for the next level. Recently attended our ENY Senior Day where he was 78 MPH across the diamond and showed the same defensive skill set. Strength needed in the box but that will come with the next level. Will be with us this Sunday at House of Sports.

Parker Stemkowski RHP / 3B / Nyack, NY / 2019

Another physical arm at 6-foot-2 225 pounds, Stemkowski worked 80-82 MPH with arm-side run and sink. Slider showed next level action with late tilt at 71-73 MPH.

Sean Dertinger RHP / SS / Nanuet , NY / 2019

Exceptional athlete at 5-foot-10 160 pounds; fastball was up from the last time we saw him to 79-80 MPH from a low ¾ arm slot. Plenty of sink to his 2S FB in the 78-79 MPH range.Change up was a bit firm at 73-75, also worked in a late tilting slider at 67-68 MPH.

Additional Highlights

2019 OF Chris Sandoval (East Ramapo)
Physical frame with plenty of arm strength. Footspeed projects to corner outfield spot. Will get an up close and personal look at him this coming Sunday at our Last Chance Preview - Downstate to be held at House of Sports.

2020 C Jonathan Malinas-Roberto (North Rockland)
Intriguing catcher with with fast twitch actions behind the plate; quick feet, gets out in front of the plate in a flash on bunts. Arm strength will need to improve but actions are there.

2020 C Anthony Barone (Clarkstown South)
Well put together backstop at 5-foot-11 165 pounds who averaged pop times in the mid 2.1 range. Athletic setup behind the plate; compact, traditional catcher’s arm action that held it’s carry.

2019 MIF Patrick Dodrill (North Rockland)
Athletic build at 5-foot-11 170 pounds; steady defender that makes the plays with an arm that works from the left side.

2019 MIF Trevor Montana (Clarkstown South)
Fast twitch actions up the middle; can make the play on the move and is active on both sides of the bag. Above average foot speed; inside-out swing path. Will be able to handle SS at the collegiate level but could also make a dynamic 2B at the right program.

2020 RHP Paxton Myers (Clarkstown South)
The surprise of the event was Myers as he hopped on the mound and sat 86-88 MPH on a cold, blustery evening. Durable 6-foot-0 200 pound frame with a repeatable delivery. Pounded the zone with all three pitches. Spun an above average breaking ball in the low 70’s and showed a down angle change.

2021 RHP Nick Murphy (Clarkstown South)

Promising prospect; the 5-foot-11 RHP sat right at 78 MPH with above average command. Breaking ball was 66 MPH and CH was 66 MPH.

2021 RHP Eoghan Hege-Cornell (Nyack)
Projectable 6-foot-1 160 pound frame; the RHP works out of a high arm slot at 80-81 MPH with some late cutting action. Down action change up a 69-70 MPH. Curveball was late action 12-to-6 downer at 62-63 MPH.

2019 Juwan Lopez (North Rockland)
Short arm action for the 6-foot-1 180 pound righty. Plenty of arm-side run to his 81-82 MPH FB while also flashing a late action sweeper at 63-64 MPH.

2021 3B/RHP Corey Savedoff (Clarkstown North)
5-foot-11 165 right that was 80-81 MPH. Showed feel for breaking ball at 64-65 MPH and breaking ball at 69 MPH. Another 2021 prospect to follow come spring time.
