With 2022 now in the past, PBR Ohio is eagerly anticipating bringing the Buckeye state the best high school coverage that can be found anywhere in 2023. Starting in February, we began releasing team previews for squads across the state. Ahead, we will have Preseason All-State Teams as well as the Preseason State Rankings coming your way.

2023 Spring Team Preview: Perry Pirates

Team Name: Perry Pirates
Head Coach: Matt Platt
Division: III
2022 Record: 16-11
Returning Starters/Pitchers: 3/2

Coach Outlook: "Our team has done an awesome job of putting in the work this off season, from the weight room, to the cage, to the mound. We may be younger this year, but our youth is very talented."

2023 Team Strengths:

Top Returning Players:

  • Owen McKoon, Catcher, 2025, 6'/180, R/R, Sophomore two year starter, likely team captain (team needs to vote still). Last year: 34 RBIs, hit .329, with 6 2B, 2 3B, and 1 HR. He struck out only 11 times in 105 PA. He batted 3rd for us all year. We played in a tough CVC with a lot of college-bound pitching. He also stole 8 bases. His offensive numbers are impressive, but he is an even better catcher. He improved our staff's strike percentage by 5% from the previous year without him. He had 0 passed balls and threw out 30% of runners. His intangibles are another highlight. Excellent student, a great teammate, and a quality individual. 2022 Summer Stats: 153 PA, .409 Avg, .562 OBP, 1.226 OPS, 12 2B, 8 3B, 34 RBIs, 47 runs scored, 10 BB, 8 SO (B2 Bulls)
  • Jason Pentek - P/INF, 2024, 5"10"/165, R/R, 3rd year started, likely team captain, AB - 93, Avg.- .280, OPS - .660, RBI - 15 IP - 52.1, Starts - 8, W - 4, L - 1, ERA - 2.67, K-46, BB - 19
  • Sam Tharp - INF, 2024, 6'1"/175, S/R, 3rd year started, likely team captain AB - 97, Avg.- .275, OPS - .696
