2021 PBR Ohio: Elite 25 All-State Team
The 2021 season was my tenth season with PBR Ohio and as with each of the previous nine years, I couldn't ask for a better job. Yeah the weather could be better in March and April, but seeing these kids battle through the conditions that Ohio brings is great.
Being able to finish the season at the home of the Cleveland Indians AA affiliate, the Akron Rubberducks, is a dream that all high school baseball players hope to be able to accomplish. Canal Park is one of the finest AA venues in all of baseball and the OHSAA and Rubberducks organization did an outstanding job running the state Final Four in the second year at the site.
Personally, I want to thank all of the players, coaches, parents, media members and fans who have helped PBR Ohio and myself with coverage across the great state of Ohio.
In 2021, PBR Ohio will continue to be your one-stop spot for high school baseball news in Ohio and will look to bring you even more. Thanks again! Can't wait for the 2022 spring HS season to begin!
For all of you that are playing this summer, have a blast, work hard and use this time to make yourself better. For everyone going to play at the collegiate level, good luck! Represent your family, school and yourself as the best student-athlete you can be. For all that are going to college, going to the military or going straight to a job after high school, I wish you luck in all your future endeavors.

2021 PBR Ohio Elite 25
Josh Laisure RHP / SS / Olentangy Orange, OH / 2021Rankings StateRank: 14 / POS: 6
Report: The ace for the Pioneers faced some of the stiffest competition in the state all year. The Wright State commit went 10-0 on the mound while providing an offensive threat for a Division I team who ended the year ranked No. 1, earning him the Elite 25 Co-Player of the Year. Pitch Repertoire: A low-90s fastball that is accompanied by a low-80s slider stifled hitters all spring. 2021 Stats: 60.2 IP, 10-0, 0.92 ERA, 0.90 WHIP, 89 K, 23 BB | 40-93, .430 AVG, .482 OBP, 6 2B, 2 2B, 27 R, 24 RBI, 10 BB, 16 SB |
Logan Maxwell OF / Lima Shawnee, OH / 2021Report: What a year the TCU commit had in 2021. The smooth-swinging left-handed hitter did it all for his Lima Shawnee squad. Hitting out of the two-hole, Maxwell provided electricity in the lineup with 28 extra-base hits, including 10 home runs! To add to his 2021 success, Maxwell also stepped on the bump when needed, throwing 28.2 innings without allowing a run, earning the Shawnee senior the honor of Elite 25 Co-Player of the Year. 2021 Stats: 51-85, .600 AVG, .692 OBP, 1.963 OPS, 9 2B, 9 3B, 10 HR, 49 R, 39 RBI, 27 BB, 24 SB | 28.2 IP, 5-0, 1 SV, 0.00 ERA, 31 K |
Landon Price LHP / 1B / Lincolnview, OH / 2022Report: The Division IV runner-up Lancers of Lincolnview had a dynamic 1-2 punch with uncommitted RHP Colin Overholt as the two. Price was basically unhittable in 2021, going 11-0, allowing just two earned runs all year. Those two runs came in the 6th inning of the regional semifinal with state-ranked Antwerp, a game in which the southpaw had a no-hitter through 5.1 innings. Oh yeah... Also look at that strikeout to walk ratio for the Ohio State commit ... 162/9 ... Crazy. Pitch Repertoire: Confident in all three ... An upper-80s fastball, that is accompanied by a mid-70s curveball and an upper-70s sharp changeup kept hitters off balance all spring. 2021 Stats: 80.2 IP, 11-0, 1 SV, 0.17 ERA, 0.47 WHIP, 162 K, 9 BB | 47-100, .470 AVG, .576 OBP, 9 2B, 3 3B, 37 R, 18 RBI, 24 BB, 25 SB |
Jacob Miller RHP / OF / Liberty Union, OH / 2022Report: Possibly the most electric arm in the entire state, Jacob Miller never seemed to disappoint when he was on the bump. A strikeout-to-walk ratio of 143/13 says it all, but there is even more to it than that. When the Louisville commit is on the mound, he is in control, and he showed that in the regional semifinal against one of the top 5 teams in the state, Eastwood, a team whose lineup as well as dugout chatter has been known to bother pitchers. But Miller embraced the challenged throwing a three-hitter in leading Liberty Union to a 4-1 victory. Pitch Repertoire: A low-90s fastball, up to 95 mph, that is accompanied by a low-80s slider and an upper-70s sharp curveball ate up hitters all spring. 2021 Stats: 60 IP, 9-1, 1 SV, 0.70 ERA, 0.58 WHIP, 143 K, 13 BB |
Trey Pancake III C / OF / South Range, OH / 2021Rankings StateRank: 35 / POS: 4
Report: What isn't to like about this fiery catcher for South Range? One of the best defensive players behind the plate in the state, Pancake is great at framing and throwing as well as leading a pitching staff. To go along with being a top defensive backstop, the Ohio State commit just went out there and hit a "measly" .560, with a .641 OBP, while providing 26 XBH and 29 stolen bases. Oh yeah, he can also jump on the bump and sit in the upper-80s. 2021 Stats: 56-100, .560 AVG, .641 OBP, 14 2B, 8 3B, 4 HR, 44 R, 54 RBI, 22 BB, 4 HBP, 29 SB |
Brayden White C / RHP / Westerville South, OH / 2021Rankings StateRank: 31 / POS: 2
Report: The Westerville South Wildcats had an historic season and Brayden White was a big part of that. The Toledo commit was a leader behind the dish while providing some big-time thump in the middle of the lineup. The right-handed hitting White produced 24 extra-base hits out of 49 total hits, which shows what kind of pop opposing pitchers had to deal with this year. 2021 Stats: 49-101, .485 AVG, .529 OBP, 19 2B, 5 HR, 32 R, 39 RBI, 7 BB, 7 HBP, 8 SB |
Boston Smith C / SS / Vandalia-Butler, OH / 2021Report: Possibly the top all-around catching prospect in the state, the Cincinnati commit provided some big-time offensive numbers for one of the top teams in the state, Vandalia-Butler. Pounding out 20 XBH, including seven bombs, the left-handed hitting Smith showed pop all year long. Smith is also one of the top catch/throw prospects in the state. To go along with the offensive numbers and defense, the leadership that Smith provides is unmatched. 2021 Stats: 35-94, .372 AVG, .508 OBP, 9 2B, 4 3B, 7 HR, 47 R, 41 RBI, 20 BB, 15 SB |
Henry Kaczmar SS / Walsh Jesuit, OH / 2022Report: The Michigan commit provided top-notch offense and defense for one of the top teams in the state, Walsh Jesuit. At the plate, the left-handed hitter produced 24 XBH, while scoring 46 runs and driving in 42. Defensively, Kaczmar played a stellar shortstop for the Warriors. 2021 Stats: 54-95, .568 AVG, .620 OBP, 18 2B, 2 3B, 4 HR, 46 R, 42 RBI, 12 BB, 9 SB |
Garret Pike SS / 3B / Anthony Wayne, OH / 2021Rankings StateRank: 84 / POS: 17
Report: After an injury in 2019 and the Covid year in 2020, Garret Pike tried to make up for the time he missed with a huge 2021 campaign. The Toledo commit had 25 XBH, including nine bombs (I was lucky enough to see three), This guy can flat out swing it. Defensively, he played a solid shortstop all year for the state-rated Generals of Anthony Wayne. 2021 Stats: 47-88, .534 AVG, .612 OBP, 13 2B, 3 3B, 9 HR, 46 R, 53 RBI, 19 BB, 10 SB |
Tyler Pettorini SS / 3B / Wooster, OH / 2021Rankings StateRank: 17 / POS: 4
Report: The Ohio State commit put on a show offensively for his Wooster team, providing 23 XBH and 34 stolen bases. Pettorini will look to carry on this success he had this spring for the Buckeyes in the future. 2021 Stats: 48-88, .545 AVG, .607 OBP, 16 2B, 6 3B, 1 HR, 40 R, 25 RBI, 12 BB, 34 SB |
Carson Clark SS / 2B / Vandalia-Butler, OH / 2021Rankings StateRank: 173 / POS: 31
Report: One of the more surpising 2021 campaigns was that of Vandalia-Butler's Carson Clark. Though only ranked 173rd in the 2021 class, that only brought motivation to the Wright State commit who had an on-base percentage of better than 66%. Think about that... Amazing Carson! The infielder will look to carry on this success for the Horizon League champions. 2021 Stats: 50-93, .538 AVG, .661 OBP, 9 2B, 2 3B, 2 HR, 48 R, 35 RBI, 23 BB, 14 SB |
Lex Boedicker SS / 3B / Bath, OH / 2021Rankings StateRank: 27 / POS: 7
Report: Left-handed hitting Lex Boedicker did what was expected of him, he mashed and a .602 OBP with 20 XBH tells us that. The Central Florida commit showed again that his bat is one of the top bats in the state. To go along with that, Boedicker also threw 59.1 innings with a 0.35 ERA, to cap off an outstanding HS career. 2021 Stats: 45-88, .511 AVG, .602 OBP, 15 2B, 2 3B, 3 HR, 30 R, 17 RBI, 18 BB | 59.1 IP, 7-1, 4 SV, 0.35 ERA, 0.82 WHIP, 77 K, 18 BB |
Ryan Gilbert OF / OF / Kenston, OH / 2021Report: The Super 60 participant carried that momentum into spring with some big time numbers. A .631 OBP to go along with six bombs and 24 stolen bases are some of the reasons why the future Indiana Hoosier is an Elite 25 prospect. 2021 Stats: 41-82, .500 AVG, .631 OBP, 8 2B, 2 3B, 6 HR, 38 R, 21 RBI, 18 BB, 11 HBP, 24 SB |
Charles Dean OF / RHP / Centennial, OH / 2021Rankings StateRank: 50 / POS: 7
Report: The future Cincinnati Bearcat may not have had the amount of at-bats or played against the top competition throughout the spring, but the numbers speak for themselves. On base 74% of the time with 15 XBH in just 47 at bats, that's impressive! Dean also played some outstanding defense all spring. Look for Dean to make a name while at Cincinnati. 2021 Stats: 30-47, .638 AVG, .740 OBP, 7 2B, 3 3B, 5 HR, 24 R, 33 RBI, 11 BB, 11 SB |
Nathan Archer OF / LHP / Keystone, OH / 2021Rankings StateRank: 30 / POS: 4
Report: The future Bowling Green State University Falcon was all-around extremely solid for his Keystone squad in 2021. Offensively, defensively and on the base paths, Archer did it all for his Wildcats this season. 2021 Stats: 42-84, .500 AVG, .581 OBP, 7 2B, 4 3B, 3 HR, 30 R, 20 RBI, 17 BB, 20 SB |
Gavin Bruni LHP / 1B / Alliance, OH / 2021Report: The top overall prospect in the 2021 class was on his way to yet another outstanding season, but after being hit by a pitch on the hand 3/4 of the way through the season, his 2021 campaign was cut short. Despite not playing a full season, the southpaw Ohio State commit deserved to be on the Elite 25, having put together some impressive numbers. Pitch Repertoire: Low-to-mid 90s fastball, an upper-70s breaker, and a mid-80s change... Good numbers at any level, let alone at the high school level. 2021 Stats: 37 IP, 3-1, 0.18 ERA, 0.59 WHIP, 79 K, 17 BB | 27-65, .415 AVG, .558 OBP, 5 2B, 2 3B, 1 HR, 22 R, 15 RBI, 16 BB, 6 HBP, 12 SB |
Brandon Mikos RHP / 3B / South Range, OH / 2021Rankings StateRank: 55 / POS: 16
Report: South Range was one of the top teams in the state despite not having one of their top 2-way guy in Jacob Gehring all year. So how did South Range do that? One of the big reasons is because of the utter-dominance that Youngstown State commit Brandon Mikos showed all year, including a 1-0 win over Ben DeMell and Gilmour Academy in the regional semifinal classic. Pitch Repertoire: An upper-80s fastball, low-70s curveball, and an upper-70s changeup had hitters off-balance all spring. 2021 Stats: 66 IP, 10-0, 0.21 ERA, 0.54 WHIP, 121 K, 9 BB |
Erik Stern LHP / 1B / Walsh Jesuit, OH / 2021Rankings StateRank: 59 / POS: 9
Report: How this kid is still uncommitted is mind-blowing to say the least. Long, lanky, wirey ... whatever you want to say about him ... he can flat-out pitch. Not permitting a run all year while playing for Division I Walsh Jesuit should tell the whole story ... But wait, he also batted in the 3-hole and hit .427 ... Wow ... What a year! Pitch Repertoire: An 84-87 mph fastball with ASR, a low-70s breaker and a low-70s change made Stern Elite this spring. 2021 Stats: 40.2 IP, 6-0, 0.00 ERA, 62 K, .054 BAA | 35-82, .427 AVG, .515 OBP, 9 2B, 2 3B, 1 HR, 28 R, 30 RBI, 10 BB, 4 HBP |
Brennan McCune RHP / 3B / Dover, OH / 2021Report: The future Toledo Rocket pounded the zone all spring with a 120/8 strikeout-to-walk ratio while helping lead his Dover Tornadoes to an outstanding season in 2021. Pitch Repertoire: A low-90s heavy fastball is accompanied by a low-80s slider, which made the right-hander almost unhittable this spring as his numbers showed. 2021 Stats: 72 IP, 9-2, 1 SV, 0.88 ERA, 120 K, 8 BB |
Ben DeMell RHP / SS / Gilmour Academy, OH / 2021Report: The future Penn State Nittany Lion followed up a dominant 2019 campaign with another outstanding spring season in 2021. This lanky righty was fun to watch in high school and will be fun to watch at the next level! Pitch Repertoire: The right-hander has a plethora of pitches, an 88-92, up to 94 mph fastball, 86-90 mph 2-seamer, 72-75 mph slider, 64-67 12/6 curveball, and a low-80s changeup made it difficult for hitters all spring. 2021 Stats: 65 IP, 7-2, 1 SV, 0.86 ERA, 0.68 WHIP, 113 K, 23 BB |
Gavin Jones RHP / RHP / North Royalton, OH / 2022Report: The recent Alabama commit put up some big-time numbers during his junior season, helping lead his North Royalton squad. Look for Jones to have a dominant summer before being one of the favorites for Pitcher of the Year accolades in 2022. Pitch Repertoire: A low-90s fastball, upper-70s curveball, low-80s slider, and low-80s change gave Jones an unhittable arsenal. 2021 Stats: 64.1 IP, 6-1, 2 SV, 0.76 ERA, 0.90 WHIP, 101 K, 24 BB |
Landon Beidelschies LHP / 1B / Canfield, OH / 2022Rankings StateRank: 21 / POS: 4
Report: Canfield was the last uneaten team in the state in 2021 and the southpaw Landon Beidelschies was big part of the reason. The future Army Cadet had an outstanding junior campaign with nine victories before a loss to Salem in regionals. Pitch Repertoire: Mid-to-upper-80s fastball, mid-70s slider, and an upper 70s changeup fooled hitters all season. 2021 Stats: 51 IP, 9-1, 0.41 ERA, 0.94 WHIP, 90 K, 13 BB |
Jaden Varner LHP / OF / Waynedale, OH / 2021Rankings StateRank: 38 / POS: 5
Report: The future Kent State Golden Flash put together yet another outstanding season for Waynedale. The two-way prospect has put up some of the more eye-popping numbers each of his seasons in high school. Look for the southpaw to continue his success for Kent State. Pitch Repertoire: Mid-to-upper-80s fastball, a mid-to-upper-70s breaker and an upper-80s changeup gave hitters fits all spring. 2021 Stats: 61 IP, 10-0, 1 SV, 0.34 ERA, 0.44 WHIP, 146 K, 13 BB | 51-98, .520 AVG, .561 OBP, 13 2B, 2 3B, 3 HR, 39 R, 30 RBI, 9 BB, 4 HBP, 22 SB |
Andrew Patrick SS / RHP / Hilliard Darby, OH / 2021Report: An uber-athletic two-way prospect, the future Wright State Raider showcased all of his arsenal in 2021 for his high school team, Hilliard Darby. How elite was Patrick? Try 18 XBH, 26 stolen bases and some electric stuff on the bump. Pitch Repertoire: Two-pitch mix of an upper-80s fastball and a mid-70s curveball gave hitters fits. 2021 Stats: 38-98, .388 AVG, .496 OBP, 13 2B, 2 3B, 3 HR, 34 R, 13 RBI, 19 BB, 36 SB | 55.1 IP, 7-1, 1 SV, 1.90 ERA, 60 K |
DJ Newman SS / RHP / Archbold, OH / 2022Rankings StateRank: 72 / POS: 18
Report: This uncommitted two-way prospect had an outstanding 2021 campaign, helping lead his Archbold Bluestreaks to the D-II state finals. At the plate, the right-handed hitting Newman showed he has gap-to-gap pop with some of the best backside ability in the state. On the mound, the right-handed pitcher was a bulldog, striking out 97 and walking just 15. Pitch Repertoire: A mid-to-upper 80s fastball that is complimented by a low-70s 12/6 curveball. 2021 Stats: 57-112, .509 AVG, .563 OBP, 15 2B, 3 3B, 3 HR, 34 R, 30 RBI, 13 BB, 9 SB | 61.2 IP, 1.95 ERA, 97 K, 15 BB |

2021 PBR Ohio September Call-Ups

The Future Buckeye looks to continue this in the summer and into next spring. 2021 Stats: 32-76, .421 AVG, .488 OBP, 9 2B, 3 3B, 1 HR, 21 R, 21 RBIs, 12 SB |
Kurtis Reid SS / RHP / Hamilton, OH / 2021Report: The future Louisville Cardinal was on base more than 57% of the time while providing 16 XBH. Outstanding season for the talented shortstop. 2021 Stats: 30-69, .435 AVG, .571 OBP, 9 2B, 6 3B, 1 HR, 34 R, 24 RBI, 24 SB |
Josh Overbeek 3B / C / Anderson, OH / 2021Rankings StateRank: 21 / POS: 2

Sergio DeCello SS / C / Badin, OH / 2021Rankings StateRank: 40 / POS: 6
Report: An electric athlete at short, at the plate and even on the bump has DeCello as one of the tops in Ohio. The future Charleston Southern commit was one of the more fun prospects to watch in all of the state. We look forward to seeing how he does in the future. 2021 Stats: 40-88, .455 AVG, .597 OBP, 11 2B, 4 3B, 2 HR, 37 R, 35 RBI, 28 SB |
Matthew Wolfe SS / RHP / Olentangy Orange, OH / 2022Report: A Vanderbilt commit who plays shortstop for one of the top teams in the state typically will put you on the list of one of the best prospects in the state and that is the case for Wolfe. The right-handed hitter had a great year for Olentangy Orange. 2021 Stats: 36-83, .434 AVG, .575 OBP, 6 2B, 2 3B, 2 HR, 31 R, 25 RBI, 15 BB, 14 HBP, 19 SB |
Johnathan Kulich OF / RHP / Massillon Jackson, OH / 2021Rankings StateRank: 33 / POS: 5
Report: Uncommitted 2021 prospect Johnathan Kulich put together an outstanding season for Massillon Jackson hitting better than .500. 2021 Stats: 34-66, .515 AVG, 3 2B, 2 3B, 27 R, 14 RBI, 24 BB, 21 SB |
Elijah Vogelsong OF / LHP / Minford, OH / 2021Rankings StateRank: 63 / POS: 10
Report: The two-way future Marshall Thundering Herd prospect was dominant on the bump all year for his Minford squad. At the plate, Vogelsong had 17 XBH while hitting .247 with 19 walks and 14 stolen bases. Pitch Repertoire: Mid-to-upper-80s fastball, low-70s breaker and low-70s changeup helped make him dominant all season. 2021 Stats: 61 IP, 10-0, 0.31 ERA, 0.73 WHIP, 89 K |
Quinton Hall LHP / 1B / Vandalia-Butler, OH / 2021Rankings StateRank: 87 / POS: 13
Report: The ace for Vandalia-Butler had one heck of a year for his team, going 12-1 on the season. The Eastern Kentucky commit fanned 1.5 batters per inning. Pitch Repertoire: Mid-to-upper-80s fastball, low-70s breaker and low-70s changeup made him tough to square up. 2021 Stats: 65.1 IP, 12-1, 1.07 ERA, 0.96 WHIP, 95 K, 22 BB |
Ty Roder RHP / Anthony Wayne, OH / 2021Rankings StateRank: 16 / POS: 7
Report: The Wright State commit was dominant all season, besides one hiccup which came in his first game back after minor-surgery. After seeing how dominant Roder can be with my own eyes, I want that on my team!! Pitch Repertoire: Low-90s fastball and upper-70s slider were tough to hit all season. 2021 Stats: 44.1 IP, 4-1, 1.74 ERA, 77 K, 24 BB |
Lane Rhodes RHP / 3B / Salem, OH / 2021Rankings StateRank: 76 / POS: 23

Owen Blackledge 3B / 1B / North Canton Hoover, OH / 2021Rankings StateRank: 23 / POS: 3
Report: The future TCU Hornfrog was tough on the bump and at the plate for North Canton Hoover in 2021. Pitch Repertoire: An upper-80s fastball and an upper-70s breaker made Blackledge tough to hit. 2021 Stats: 35-86, .407 AVG, .495 OBP, 6 2B, 2 3B, 2 HR, 19 R, 25 RBI, 9 SB | 51.2 IP, 7-2, 1 SV, 1.22 ERA, 69 K, 15 BB |
Luke Krouse LHP / OF / Antwerp, OH / 2022Rankings StateRank: 29 / POS: 7
Report: The Bowling Green State University commit was the tough-luck loser twice to a team who made it to the state finals, but besides those two games, the southpaw was pretty dominant. Look for the lefty to continue to improve this summer and into next spring. Pitch Repertoire: Mid-80s fastball, low-70s curveball, and mid-70s changeup made him tough to square up all season. 2021 Stats: 43.2 IP, 6-2, 1 SV, 1.28 ERA, 0.91 WHIP, 76 K | 27-64, .422 AVG, .519 OBP, 8 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 16 R, 30 RBI, 14 BB, 5 SB |
