West Virginia Fall Review Event Analysis: First Basemen & Pitchers

The West Virginia Fall Review took place on November 17th at Pro Performance RX giving our staff a final look this fall at some of the top prospects in West Virginia. Today we conclude our series of articles analyzing the prospects in attendance with a look at those players that participated as primary first basemen and pitchers (LISTED IN ALPHABETICAL ORDER).

Gregory EddyGregory Eddy, Morgantown HS, 1B/LHP, 2023
5-foot-8, 160-pound primary pitcher sat 70-72 with a quick arm stroke out of a low 3/4 arm slot. Slider at 62-64 is an above average pitch with tight 1/7 rotation and depth. CH at 59-60 is thrown with good sell giving Eddy a solid three pitch mix. Eddy displayed good rhythm and balance to his delivery and will be an interesting follow in this class. Left-handed hitter starts from a slightly open stance and utilizes a toe tap stride to begin. Throws weight hard to his front side but is able to keep his hands back while demonstrating a feel for the barrel. Registered an 70 mph bat exit velocity and ran an 8.22 60-yard dash. Showcased active feet and a soft glove around the bag at first base with accurate 70 mph arm strength across the diamond.

Tucker PurdyTucker Purdy, Herbert Hoover HS, 1B/RHP, 2021
6-foot-1, 245-pound right-handed hitter starts from a straight up, slightly open square stance and initiates his swing from a quick show and replace stride. Showcased a feel for the barrel with some length to his swing. Registered a bat exit velocity of 89 mph and ran a 7.76 60-yard dash. Displayed developing defensive skills around the bag at first base with accurate 71 mph arm strength across the diamond. The right-hander also sat 74-75 from a 3/4 arm slot on the mound with a deliberate, low effort motion. Showed a feel for his curveball with 11/5 rotation at 64-65 and cut to his changeup at 65-67.

Zac RoseZac Rose, Jefferson HS, 1B/LHP, 2021
6-foot-2, 220-pound physical prospect showcased a well-rounded skill set in all phases of the game. The left-handed hitter starts from a square stance and initiates his swing with a heel raise stride. Showed balance and athleticism throughout swing with the ability to drive the ball to all fields. Registered an 84 mph bat exit velocity and ran a 7.72 60-yard dash. The left-handed thrower also showcased athletic defensive actions with a 80 mph arm strength across the diamond. On the mound, Rose displayed a 3-pitch mix. His fastball sat 80-81 with easy action out of his hand. His slider sat 68-69 with 2/8 action along with a developing change-up at 72-74.

Ethan StewartEthan Stewart, Meigs County (OH), RHP/1B, 2023
6-foot-1, 205-pound right-handed hitter took one of the more impressive rounds of batting practice, showcasing present power to the pull side and the ability to stay in the zone for long periods of time. He starts from a slightly open stance and utilizes a leg-hang stride to begin his swing. Showed rhythm and balance with a solid feel for the barrel. Registered a 83 mph bat exit velocity and ran a 7.65 60-yard dash. Displayed capable feet and glove work around the bag at first base with accurate 83 mph arm strength across the diamond. Stewart sat 83-84, T86 out of a over-the-top arm slot with a long arm motion. Curveball sat 67-69 with 11/5 rotation with a hook in the takeaway. His changeup is an advanced pitch with excellent feel and heavy arm-side run at 71-73. Definite power arm & bat to follow in this 2023 class in Ohio, currently ranked 6th.

PITCHERS

Clayton DyerClayton Dyer, Spring Valley HS, RHP 2023
On the mound the 5-foot-11, 140-pound right-hander sat 71-73, T76 from a high 3/4 arm slot. Arm action is long in back, but quick out front and he repeats very well. Curveball shows tight, two-plane 11/5 rotation at 63-65. Changeup showed sinking action at fastball arm speed sitting 62-64. Dyer ran a 7.41 60-yard dash along with a 56 mph exit velo. At the plate, Dyer initiates his swing in athletic spread stance. He was able to find the barrel consistently on this day. Projectable frame with room to add more weight and velocity in the near future.

Ben NicolBen Nicol, George Washington HS, LHP, 2023
6-foot-5, 175-pounder sat 72-73 from a high 3/4 arm slot with a wrap in the back and a quick arm. Showcased a feel for the zone with arm-side run to his fastball. Curveball showed 1/7 rotation with average depth at 58-60. Changeup sat 58-61 at fastball arm speed with arm-side run from a slightly different arm slot. Athletic frame has room to continue adding strength. Additional velocity spikes are likely.
