OK High School Preseason Spotlight: Coweta

Diego Solares
Staff Writer

The Oklahoma high school baseball season kicks off on March 2nd, opening day for regular season action under Ossaa regulations. Over the next several weeks, leading up to opening day, we’ll be publishing our team previews ahead of the 2021 spring season, touching on programs spanning all state classifications, leading into a countdown through the official PBR Oklahoma Preseason Power 25 Rankings.

Perennially, we’ve submitted a Preseason Questionnaire to high school head coaches across the entire state. Their responses have been flooding in and we’re using the detailed insight they’ve provided in our team-by-team preseason analysis.

If you would like your team covered, please have your head coach email us at [email protected]

Our 2021 preseason coverage continues today.

Team: Coweta High School
OSSAA Class: 5A
Head Coach: Cody Pair
Returning Starters: 8
Returning Pitchers: 7

TOP PLAYERS

Gunner McCollough, OF, 2021, Northeastern Oklahoma A&M JC commit

Headlining this pitching staff is McCollough, a former PBR Future Games participant and the 19th ranked prospect in the state’s senior class. McCollough brings a physical 6-foot-4, 240-pound bulldog-esque presence to the mound that stars on the football field, too. He’ll bring that raw physicality into the right-handed batter’s box too as a true thumper type for this team.

Logan Vaughan, C, 2021, Cowley County CC commit

One of the senior anchors of this team, Vaughan provides key stability for Coweta in multiple different aspects of the game. He’s a strong, vocal leader behind the dish with some of the best catch-and-throw skills in the state’s senior class. Offensively, he utilizes his 6-foot-1, 190-pound frame and switch-hitting abilities to comfortably work on the barrel, primarily to his pull-side.

Grant Jones, OF, 2021, Connors State College commit

Jones has started in center field and batted towards the top of this lineup since his freshman season, making him an integral all-around part of this squad. He comfortably boasts above-average speed that plays up on the grass and his table-setter approach offensively works well for this team. Ranked No. 146th overall in the state’s senior class, Jones is committed to Connors State College.

Landon Ray, OF, 2021, Northern Oklahoma - Tonkawa commit

Another middle-of-the-order bat for Coweta, Ray is a 5-foot-7, 170-pound speedster with sneaky juice harnessed into his right-handed stroke. He’ll team up with Jones and others to patrol the outfield for this club.

Cash Singleton, OF/P, 2021

Singleton is another versatile piece for Coweta, as he’ll log competitive innings on the mound and provide impact offensive contributions offensively, primarily on the basepaths with his speed. He’s an uncommitted athlete in Oklahoma’s senior class.

Landon Hitchcock, RHP, 2021

Hitchcock logged varsity innings as both a sophomore and junior, and the 6-foot-3, 160-pound right-hander should continue to shoulder a decent sized workload in 2021, too. He’s one of Coweta’s primary arms and, internally, they value the experience he has under his belt. Hitchcock is still uncommitted.

Kooper McCoy, UTL, 2021, Ottawa University commit

The swiss army knife for this Coweta club is McCoy, who’s played every position throughout his high school career, except center field, and should facilitate key contributions in multiple ways. He’ll primarily see time behind the plate or on the mound, but his versatility does add key positional flexibility that every competitive team needs.

Chase Pair, SS/P, 2022

Standing at an athletic 6-foot, 155-pound frame, Pair is the “X-factor” type player for this club that we’re excited to get our first live looks at this spring. You can pencil him in to hit somewhere at the top of this lineup, although his most impactful contribution might come defensively, where he looks to be the early favorite to play shortstop for this club. Pair will also see time on the mound as one of Coweta’s top arms.

Liam Taylor, MIF/P, 2023

Joining Pair up the middle is Taylor, the 31st overall prospect in Oklahoma’s sophomore class. He’s an athletic 5-foot-10, 150-pound athlete that’s still filling out a loose-levered, wiry frame. When he’s not flashing leather defensively, Taylor will hop on the mound and contribute quality varsity innings for Coweta in his first season with head coach Cody Pair’s squad - where his low-80s fastball and feel to land his off-speed for strikes should play nicely.

OUTLOOK

STRENGTHS: “Started five sophomores and one freshman everyday off of a 2019 State semifinal team, and had others contribute in varsity roles, and they are all in the lineup as seniors this year. Senior class provides a lot of leadership and plenty of experience with five everyday starters since their sophomore year. Defense and pitching will be strengths again this year and offensively we feel our lineup is going to be very tough with our overall team speed and the bats we will put in the lineup everyday.”

AREAS OF IMPROVEMENT: “Offensively, we want to improve on past years and look to have a breakout year, but we have to go prove that.”
