OK Summer Underclass Games Analysis: 2019 Catchers

Prep Baseball Report Oklahoma hosted its first event of the summer at beautiful L.Dale Mitchell Stadium on the campus of OU. This event hosted nearly 80 of the top 2020 and 2019 graduates from around the state for a pro showcase followed by games. These talented underclassmen showed their skills in front of coaches from every level of college baseball as well as the PBR OK staff. 

All of the video, stats, and pictures from the event have been posted on each individual player's profiles. Over the next week and a half, we will be taking an in-depth look at each player from the event position by position.Today we will look at the 2019 catchers. Each player's full profile can be viewed by clicking on their picture. All exit velo's were taken from a tee and all the at bats in the game started with a 1-1 count. 

2019 Catchers

Dayne Bowerman C / Roff , OK / 2019

A 5-foot-8, 160-pound proportional frame with some strength throughout. Offensively, the right-handed hitter bats from an upright relaxed set-up with rhythm throughout. Uses a short, reverse toe-tap load, short to the ball, flat bat path. In BP, shows a middle to pull approach, mostly flat, mostly barrels, 76 mph exit velo. Runs a 7.53 60. Defensively, active and high energy behind the dish with a consistent rocking side to side, shows steady strong hands receiving, both in drill work and in the game. Shows a consistently clean transfer and footwork out of the shoot. Throws with a short action coming through a 3/4 slot, some accuracy, 73 mph, 1.88-1.97 showcase pop times. In the game, grounded out to the shortstop twice.

Jordan Coffey C / 1B / Deer Creek, OK / 2019

A 6-foot, 205-pound frame with strength throughout. Offensively, the right-handed hitter bats from a wide open, spread out set-up with a deep squat with rhythm in his hands. Uses a big rocking load, standing up out of his legs before launching his hands, short to the ball with bat speed and strength, slightly uphill plane. In BP, shows a pull approach with lift, put on a show barreling almost every ball, leaving the yard multiple times, 93 mph exit velo. Runs a 7.69 60. Defensively, is an average receiver and blocker, shows clean exchanges, can throw from his knees or feet, above average accuracy, 67 mph, 2.0-2.22 showcase pop times. In the game, went 2-for-3 with a ground rule double to left field and a single. 

William Emerson C / 3B / Choctaw, OK / 2019

A 5-foot-7, 170-pound durable frame with some strength. Offensively, the right-handed hitter bats from a wide open, balanced set-up with some rhythm in his hands. Uses a moderate leg kick for timing, some length in the swing, uphill path, abbreviated finish. In BP, shows an all fields approach with lift and more pop than his 81 mph exit velo would suggest, especially pull side, found some barrels. Runs a 7.69 60. Defensively, an above average blocker keeping the ball close, shows aggressive actions receiving and on throws down. Uses a clean transfer, a high-3/4 slot, 73 mph, 1.99-2.14 showcase pop times, with accuracy. In the game, went 1-for-2 with a single. 

Nollan Koon C / 1B / Yukon , OK / 2019

A 5-foot-9, 165-pound proportional frame with some strength throughout. Offensively, the left-handed hitter bats from an upright, open, quiet set-up. Uses a moderate knee-knock leg kick for timing, short to the ball, slightly uphill path. In BP, shows an all fields approach with some lift, pull pop, and backspin carry, exit velo of 90 mph. Runs a 7.13 60. Defensively, shows soft hands, advanced blocking, consistent footwork and exchanges. Throws with a typical catcher's slot and arm action, 71 mph, 2.00-2.20 showcase pop, has been down to a 1.95, some accuracy. In the game was 1-for-3 with an in the park home run that was well stuck to the pull side.   

Harmon Newell C / 2B / Lawton , OK / 2019

A 5-foot-10, 170-pound proportional build. Offensively, the right handed hitter bats from a balanced, slightly wide set-up with rhythm in his hands. Uses a short and quick stride, inside out swing, and an abbreviated finish. In BP, shows an opposite field approach, some barrels, 71 mph exit velo. Runs an 8.09 60. Defensively, shows clean exchanges with a very short arm stroke, high-3/4 slot, 59 mph, 2.26-2.33 showcase pop times, some accuracy.  In the game, was 0-for-2 with a ground out to the pitcher.

Scott Torkleson C / SS / Cascia Hall, OK / 2019

A 6-foot, 155-pound lean frame with room to continue to add strength. Offensively, the right-handed hitter bats from a wide open, narrow, back leg-heavy set-up with some rhythm in his hands. Uses a big knee-knock leg kick and slight arm-bar load, some length in the swing. Shows a middle pull approach in BP with some lift, 81 mph exit velo, mostly barrels. Runs a 6.94 60. Behind the dish, Torkleson stands out with soft hands, quick feet, quick clean exchanges and a high-3/4 slot with a quick release. Throws 74 mph from behind the plate with a 1.87-2.0 pop.  In the game, hit a ground rule double and launched a home run to left-center field off of 85 mph. 

Carson Young C / RHP / Weatherford , OK / 2019

A lean 6-foot, 168-pound frame with room to add size and strength. Offensively, the right-handed hitter bats from slightly back leg heavy set-up with some rhythm throughout. Uses a quick heel turn and plant instead of a stride, bat path is smooth and uphill with good extension, stays on his back side. In BP, shows a pull approach with lift, mostly barrels, 83 mph exit velo. Runs a 7.08 60. Defensively, sits low in the crouch, sticks pitches well, average blocker. Uses a traditional catcher's arm action and slot, 63 mph, 2.01-2.04 showcase pop times. In the game, went 0-for-2.
