2023 Southwestern Ontario Preseason ID: Quick Hits

We would like to thank all who participated in PBR Ontario's Southwestern Ontario Preseason ID. This was a great opportunity for players in the Southwest region of Ontario to get in front of our staff and showcase their offseason gains and development. Many players impressed during their individual workouts at the showcase. Below we conclude our post-event coverage with video and scouting notes on five standouts from the event.

SOUTHWESTERN ONTARIO PRESEASON ID - QUICK HITS

Preston Barr 3B / RHP / University Liggett, ON / 2024

‘24 RHP/SS Preston Barr (Michigan commit) no doubt put together the best overall day at the Southwestern Ontario Preseason ID. Athleticism is evident in his game with a 6-foot-3, 180-pound frame. Stands out most on the mound with a fastball that sat consistently 89-90mph with high-spin (2450 avg.). Pairs it with a high-spin curveball (2594 avg.) at 76-76mph with slurve-like action and good horizontal break. Feel for the changeup, as well, at 81-82mph with late fade. Strike-thrower with a good three-pitch mix. Also showed well on the infield and posted one of the best rounds of BP with top exit velocity of 94.4mph.

Carter Knelsen RHP / Leamington District , ON / 2025

Uncommitted ‘25 RHP Carter Knelsen was another arm who really stood out at the Southwestern Ontario Preseason ID. Looks the part on the mound with projection in his game at 6-foot-1, 160-pounds. Moves well downhill with clean, loose arm action and a fastball that sat comfortably at 83-85mph. The curveball is tight with top-to-bottom shape and good spin (2446 avg.) and flashed a developing slider with more cutting-action and avg. spin of 2374rpm. Impressive showing to start the year from Knelsen who’s arm our staff is eager to see outdoors and in live game-action.

Will Lewis RHP / Villanova, ON / 2023

Uncommitted ‘23 RHP Will Lewis was another one of the more mature arms at the event with feel for the mound. Lewis pitched well this summer at the NY State Games and has continued to develop and refine his stuff since then. The fastball sat 79-81mph this time around and the offspeed stuff has really developed recently. The breaking ball was 69-72mph with shape, bite and good horizontal movement. Feel for the changeup, as well, with fading action. Present 3-pitch mix and strike throwing abilities should draw some interest from college coaches as he remains unsigned.

Deagan Barr RHP / SS / University Liggett, ON / 2026

Uncommitted ‘26 RHP/SS Deagan Barr was one of the top underclassmen at the event. Athletic look on the field with projection in his game at 6-foot-2, 155-pounds and stood out most on the mound. Fastball sat 76-79mph and the best secondary offering was the breaking ball that had depth. Showed well on the infield, as well, with length and good movement side-to-side. Barr is still weak but there’s plenty to like in his game as he continues to develop and add strength.

Trent Rudge RHP / 3B / Essex District , ON / 2026

Uncommitted ‘26 Trent Rudge is one of the more physical players in his class. Standing 5-foot-11, 215-pounds, Rudge shows powerful movements in all aspects of his game. In the box, it's a violent swing with bat speed from the right-side, living in the low 9’s, topping out at 97.1 max EV. On the infield, he moves well side-to-side and showed some athleticism in his footwork and a 85 mph arm across the diamond. This will be a big summer for Rudge as he will be a close follow in Ontario’s 2026 class.

Cayman Davis OF / RHP / Holy Names HS, ON / 2025

Davis was an outfielder who stood out as soon as he stepped in the building. The athletic 6-foot-2, 160-pound frame looks right in the box. He gets on plane well with a simple, balanced stroke and works to the big part of the park. He showed some feel for the barrel and a max EV of 93.3 mph. In the outfield, he fields the ball clean with athletic actions. The arm is 79 mph right now, but there is more to come with added strength. Davis also posted the best 30-yard time at the event (3.87 sec.). Davis is an interesting follow going forward in the Tecumseh Thunder program.
