Ontario Nationals Scout Day: Quick Hits

On Sunday, September 25th, the PBR Ontario staff headed west for the Ontario Nationals Scout Day. Although the weather didn't cooperate, we took things indoors to Blue Chip Sports Training in Kitchener to get a look at 85+ players from the organization. 

The morning showcase gave our staff a look at the older age groups (16-18U) with some good looking unsigned seniors, as well as some 2024 and 2025s to keep an eye these next couple years. The afternoon gave us a look into the future of the program and the young players didn't disappoint. 

Below, we break down eight standout players from the event with video and analysis.

Andrew Bishop 1B / 3B / Resurrection Catholic Secondary School, ON / 2024

Rankings  StateRank: 30 / POS: 1

Bishop, 6-foot-4 195-pounds, continued to look the part all day long at the Ontario Nationals Scout Day. The swing was relaxed, there was rhythm in the hands and a balanced approach. Bishop can play at either corner with size and strength that translates well on either side. One of the more interesting 2024 bats in the Nationals program.

Sam Kim C / OF / Centennial CVI, ON / 2026

Kim, 5-foot-10 165-pounds, turned some heads on Sunday with his size and speed. At the plate the swing was relaxed, worked gap to gap with the hands staying above the baseball. Ran the fastest 30-yard time on the day at 3.91. Showed quick footwork and an arm to match, rounding out an impressive day for the young 2026 prospect.

Liam Wilson SS / 2B / Strathroy District Colligate Institute , ON / 2027

Wilson, 5-foot-6, 132-pounds, was a name to look out for as one of the youngest players at the event. In the field the hands were smooth and he stayed in his legs with some carry behind his throws. At the plate the swing was simple, got the barrel out front and lived up the middle. Wilson will be a name to keep an eye on as he continues to fill out.

Braxton Mathews OF / LHP / Grand River Collegiate Institute, ON / 2024

2024 left-handed pitcher Braxton Mathews was one of the more impressive arms on Sunday. Athletic look on the mound at 5-foot-11, 160-pounds and he moves well with a minimal effort, repeatable delivery. The clean arm action immediately stands out and his fastball sat 78-83mph with the ability to locate. Works with a curveball and slider and although they’re both still developing, they both had some of the better spin rates at the event. An interesting 2024 who has the qualities to break out on the mound this next year.

KJ Stronks RHP / SS / Holy Trinity , ON / 2026

2026 RHP/SS KJ Stronks jumped to our staff at the Jr Future Games Trials in February with his actions on the infield and he was no doubt one of the top underclassmen again. Stronks started his day with a strong showing on the infield where his actions, footwork and arm strength set him apart. The arm translates to the mound where he sat 76-77 with the fastball and worked with a sharp slider that had high spin for his age, along with 13.9 inches of vertical break. Still young with lots of development to come but the 6-foot-1, 145-pound prospect has lots to like on the mound.

Kai Thompson RHP / OF / N/A, ON / 2023

2023 RHP Kai Thompson took his throws in the outfield and immediately had our staff excited to watch him on the mound. 6-foot-2, 215-pound right-hander with strength throughout his game and a fastball that sat 84-86 T86.7 with good spin (2236 rpm). Works downhill with good direction and had feel for the strike zone. Worked with an impressive two-plane breaking ball at 72-74 with sharp, late break and elite spin (2696 rpm). Flashed a changeup at 75-77 that has potential as he develops more feel for the pitch. Easily the top arm on the day and the 2024 right-hander would surely be a nice addition to a college programs pitching staff.

Jackson Sheehy C / OF / St James Catholic school , ON / 2024

2024 C/RHP Jackson Sheehy posted one of the best all around days on Sunday. Immediately stands out with his size at 6-foot-4, 215-pounds and that strength translates in all areas of his game. Left-handed hitter who’s still gap-to-gap right now but the ball jumps off his bat when he finds the barrel. Top exit velocity of 90.8mph. Sheehy looks the part behind the dish with arm strength and a quick catch and throw. Jumped on the mound and showed some upside there, as well, sitting 82-84 T85 with the fastball. Offspeed stuff is still developing but his strength, size and ability to get on top of the ball allow him to create high spin rates.

Tyson Moran SS / RHP / F.E. Madill, ON / 2025

OF/RHP Tyson Moran was the most impressive 2025 we saw on Sunday. Immediately caught our eyes during the infield portion with his movements and live arm. Arm works on the mound, as well, where he worked up to 80mph. Athletic movements on the mound where he works with a CB and CH, throwing both for strikes. Left-handed hitter also had a loose swing and found the barrel often during his BP. An intriguing underclassmen in the Nationals program who shows equal upside on both sides of the ball.
