2015 PIAA State Tournament: Quarterfinals Recap

By Jacob Gill
Philadelphia Region Director of Scouting

A diverse group of participants will be gearing up this weekend for the PIAA state semifinal round on Monday, as ten of the twelve districts across the state have at least one representative among the sixteen teams still alive in the tournament. The WPIAL (District VII) leads the way with four, while Districts II, III & XI have two entrants, and Districts I, IV, V, VI, X & XII each have one.

Notes from yesterday's action:

  • Half of the quarterfinal contests were decided by three or less runs, with five being one-run decisions
  • Twelve of the sixteen winning pitchers authored complete game efforts
  • One game went into extra innings, while two were ended by the mercy rule

Storylines for Monday:

  • 4A (Wyoming Valley West/Parkland) & 3A (Abington Heights/Pottsville Area) will both feature head-to-head match-ups between Districts II & XI.
  • Neumann-Goretti/Loyalsock Township in 2A will be a rematch of last year's semifinal. The potential tying run for N-G was tagged out on the bases less than 90ft from home plate to end the game. There will be no less than thirteen players committed to play college baseball on the field in this one, including six Division I commits (with potentially more coming on both sides).
  • The other 2A semifinal, featuring Quaker Valley and Neshannock, will be a rematch of a more recent contest: this year's WPIAL championship game, won 4-0 by Neshannock.

Check our State Tournament Tracker to see how the brackets have played out. Semifinal sites and times will be added when released by the PIAA.
