By Greg Williams
Pennsylvania Director of Scouting

The summer rush of PBR events in Pennsylvania continued this week with the 2017 Western PA Top Prospect Games on July 18 and 19. 55 prospects from across the state gathered for two days of nine inning games and showcase activities at the Iron Horse Sports Complex in Windber, PA. Today we continue our analysis of the prospects in attendance by taking a look at those that participated as two-way prospects as a member of the Red Team.

Red Team (two-way prospects)

Domenic Popa, 2019, OF/LHP, Seton-La Salle Catholic HS
5-foot-10, 165-pound left-handed hitter displayed an advanced feel for the barrel and an ability to hit the ball where it is pitched both in batting practice and in game action.  Went 3-for-6 with a double in game action and registered a bat exit velocity of 82 mph.  Showcased fluid actions defensively with good routes to the baseball and current 78 mph arm strength from the outfield.  The lefty sat 72-74 from a 3/4 arm slot on the mound with run and sink to his fastball.  His curveball displayed 1/7 rotation at 63-64 while his changeup showed action similar to his fastball at 67-68.  Worked two innings allowing three hits while recording four ground ball outs.  Did not run the 60-yard dash due to a current hamstring injury.

Ryan Varley, 2018, SS/RHP, Ringgold HS
6-foot, 160-pound primary infielder showcased a soft glove hand, active feet and the ability to play through the baseball. Displayed athleticism in making the slow roller play and registered 79 mph arm strength across the diamond while demonstrating the ability to make throws from multiple arm angles.  The right-handed hitter starts from an open stance with a high back elbow and flashed good balance and rhythm throughout his swing.  Barreled the baseball consistently in his batting practice round with a bat exit velocity of 77 mph and went 1-for-5 with a sacrifice fly while making hard contact in several other at bats during game play.
