2019 Western PA Top Prospect Games: Day One Highlights

The 2019 Western PA Top Prospect Games opened play with position players running the 60-yard dash and taking live batting practice prior to playing a 12 inning game. Defensive evaluations and another 12 inning game are on tap today to complete the two day event.

Following are 13 players that shined on day one.

+ 2020 RHP/OF Marshall Weinberg (North Catholic) got the day started with a bang turning in the to 60-yard dash of the event at 6.69. He was one of five players to turn in sub-7.0 times.

+ 2020 SS/3B Gavin McGowan (Hazleton Area) took the top round of batting practice on the day and also registered the top bat exit velocity at 92 mph. McGowan barreled the baseball in all three plate appearances while scoring twice.

+ 2021 C/3B Nicholas Plank (Bellwood Antis) turned in an impressive round of batting practice and registered an 89 mph bat exit velocity and went 3-for-3 in game action. The right-handed hitter tripled in his first at bat and drove in a pair of runs. 

+ 2020 SS Casey Caufield flashed easy, fluid actions in all that he did. The left-handed hitter turned in a 6.75 60-yard dash, laced the ball all over the diamond in batting practice and showed athleticism defensively at multiple infield positions.

+ 2020 SS/3B Anthony Sherwin (Penn-Trafford) flashed an athletic skill sett with solid across the board skills, highlighted by a 91 mph bat exit velocity.

+ 2020 LHP/OF David Hammond (Science Leadership Academy) went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored.

+ 2022 OF Camron Marciniak (Johnsonburg Area) went 4-for-4 with a hustle double and scored a pair of runs.

+ 2020 C/3B Brycen Rearick (Forest Hills) went 2-for-4 with a triple off the wall and a ground rule double while showing a short, quick right-handed stroke.

+ 2021 OF/LHP Adam Crawford (West Allegheny) showcased a sound, fluid left-handed stroke in batting practice and went 3-for-5 with a run scored in game action.

+ 2021 C/OF Eric Chorba (Norwin) flashed above average defensive skills behind the dish and showed signs of power in his left-handed swing with an 88 mph bat exit velocity. 

+ 2021 RHP/SS Marcus Danchision (MMI Prep) also went 3-for-5 in game action while showing above average command of a low 80s fastball on the mound.

+ 2021 C/1B Ryan Verbonitz (Hazleton Area) showcased a compact, efficient swing from both sides of the plate in batting practice and went 4-for-4 in game action with two hits from each side.

+ 2021 1B/RHP Jack Malec (Cathedral Prep) went 2-for-3 in game action while showcasing an 88 mph bat exit velocity. The 6-foot-4 right-hander also was efficient on the mound punching out four batters in his three innings of work while sitting in the low 80s.
