Western PA Top Prospect Games Preview: Gold Team

The summer rush of PBR events in Pennsylvania began this week with the 2016 Western PA Top Prospect Games on June 14 and 15. Ninety prospects from Pennsylvania and West Virginia gathered for two days of nine inning games and showcase activities on the campus of Seton Hill University. Today we conclude our analysis of the prospects in attendance by taking a look at the prospects that participated as a member of the Gold Team.

TOP PROSPECT

Michael TurconiMichael Turconi, SS/2B, Blackhawk HS, Class of 2018

5-foot-10, 165-pound left-handed hitter impressed in batting practice with advanced barrel whip and a direct swing path allowing him to drive baseballs to all fields. Starts from a square stance and utilizes a lift-and-replace stride to initiate his swing with a bat exit velocity of 89 mph. Advanced, fluid defensive actions with active feet, a soft glove hand and big arm strength (89 mph). Ran a 6.84 60-yard dash and went 2-for-3 with two triples in game action on game two of the event.

Austin Crebs, RHP/3B, Wheeling Park HS (WV), Class of 2017

6-foot-1, 185-pound primary pitcher sat 80-82 from a long-armed 3/4 arm slot. Also showcased solid feel for a 73 mph curveball with 11/5 rotation and a 75 mph changeup thrown at near fastball arm speed. Worked three innings allowing five hits while striking out three.

Right-handed hitter starts from a square stance and utilizes a short lift-and-replace stride to initiate his swing. Registered an 84 mph bat exit velocity, ran a 7.46 60-yard dash and displayed accurate 77 mph arm strength across the diamond. 

Billy Davis, C/1B, Carlisle HS, Class of 2017

6-foot, 200-pound right-handed hitter starts from a square stance and initiates his swing with a heel-raise stride. A failure to fully engage the lower half prevents Davis from being able to get the barrel through contact to extension with regularity. Registered an 83 mph bat exit velocity and ran a 7.69 60-yard dash. Displayed solid receiving and blocking skills with pop times of 2.14-2.21 on throws of 72 mph from the crouch.

Daniel Gonzalez, SS/2B, Lancaster Catholic HS, Class of 2019

5-foot-8, 165-pound right-handed hitter starts from a square stance and utilizes a leg-lift stride to initiate his swing. Registered a 76 mph bat exit velocity and ran a 7.65 60-yard dash. Flashed capable defensive actions with a soft glove hand and developing arm strength (79 mph).

Nick Leonard, SS/RHP, Brooke HS (WV), Class of 2018

5-foot-10, 175-pound right-handed hitter starts from a square stance and initiates his swing with a short lift-and-replace stride. Registered an 84 mph bat exit velocity and ran a 7.33 60-yard dash. Displayed solid defensive actions with enough arm strength to remain on left side of infield at next level (82 mph).

Right-hander sat 82-84 from a high 3/4 arm slot during three innings of work in game action. Also flashed a 75 mph slider and a 69 mph curveball with 11/5 rotation. Allowed one run on four hits while striking out two.

Tanner Lett, C/2B, Doddridge County HS (WV), Class of 2019

6-foot-2, 175-pound right-handed hitter starts from a slightly open stance and utilizes a short lift-and-replace stride to initiate his swing. Registered a 79 mph bat exit velocity and ran a 7.57 60-yard dash. Displayed developing skills behind the plate with pop times of 2.34-2.41 on throws of 69 mph from the crouch. 

Isaiah Lucas, OF/RHP, Butler Area HS, Class of 2018

6-foot-1, 180-pound right-handed hitter starts from a square stance and utilizes a heel-raise stride to initiate his swing. Registered an 87 mph bat exit velocity and went 2-for-5 at the plate during game action. Showcased average defensive skills with accurate 75 mph arm strength from the outfield while running a 7.00 60-yard dash. Topped at 71 mph from a high 3/4 arm slot on the mound.

Jordan Page, OF, Morgantown HS (WV), Class of 2017

5-foot-8, 175-pound right-handed hitter starts from a square stance and utilizes a heel-raise stride to initiate his swing. Creates most of 80 mph bat exit velocity with upper body. Went 2-for-5 at the plate in game action and ran a 6.95 60-yard dash. Displayed solid defensive actions with accurate 79 mph arm strength from the outfield.

Zach Palmer, LHP/1B, Pittsburgh Central Catholic HS, Class of 2019

6-foot-4, 210-pound two-way prospect sat 74-76 from a high 3/4 arm slot with natural cut to his fastball. Also displayed a 65 mph curveball with 1/7 rotation that has a chance to be a plus pitch as the underclassman grows into his frame. Worked two scoreless innings with two strikeouts.

Left-handed hitter starts from an open stance and initiates his swing with a lift-and-replace stride. Registered an 85 mph bat exit velocity and went 1-for-3 with a double on day one of the event. Ran a 7.65 60-yard dash and showed capable defensive actions around the bag at first base with 72 mph arm strength across the diamond.

Travis Perry, RHP/1B, Rocky Grove HS, Class of 2018

6-foot-7, 200-pound primary pitcher impressed sitting 84-86 while pounding the zone from a high 3/4 arm slot. Also showed solid feel for 70 mph curveball with 11/5 rotation and a 72 mph changeup thrown at fastball arm speed with some late sink. Worked three innings allowing one run on three hits while striking out five.

Sevin Schoeneweis, RHP/OF, Moon Area HS, Class of 2018

6-foot-1, 175-pound primary pitcher stood out with a well rounded skill set. Sat 84-86 on the mound from a high 3/4 arm slot with late life to his fastball. Also displayed a feel for a 77 mph slider and a 68 mph changeup during three scoreless innings of work. Allowed two hits, struck out three and retired five batters via ground balls.

Right-handed hitter starts from an open stance and initiates his swing with a lift-and-replace stride. Registered an 86 mph bat exit velocity and ran a 7.12 60-yard dash. Displayed athletic actions defensively with accurate 89 mph arm strength from the outfield.

Chase Smith, OF, Central HS, Class of 2017

5-foot-10, 175-pound right-handed hitter starts from a square stance and utilizes a toe-tap stride to initiate his swing. Gets through contact well with an exaggerated lift. Ball jumps of his barrel with a bat exit velocity of 88 mph. Barreled several balls to the deepest part of the park in game action. Ran a 6.93 60-yard dash and displayed athletic actions defensively with solid routes to the baseball and 81 mph arm strength.

Logan Stump, RHP, Independence HS (WV), Class of 2018

5-foot-11, 175-pound right-hander sat 80-84 from a high 3/4 arm slot with good balance and direction to his delivery. Also displayed solid feel for a 70 mph curveball with 11/5 rotation and a 75 mph changeup thrown with solid arm speed. Worked three innings with three strikeouts while allowing six hits.

Justin Wright, 3B, Hempfield Area HS, Class of 2018

6-foot-1, 180-pound right-handed hitter starts from a square stance and utilizes a short lift-and-replace stride to initiate his swing. Balanced, fluid swing with loose hands leads to a bat exit velocity of 92 mph. Ran a 7.12 60-yard dash and flashed above average defensive skills with the ability to play through the baseball at 3B. Also flashed a soft glove hand with accurate 83 mph arm strength across the diamond.
