A trio of 2017 prospects stood out as the top performers among juniors in attendance. All three received invitations to participate for Team PBR Pennsylvania at the 2016 Pennsylvania Travel Baseball State Championships in August with Bethel and Weber already being added to the roster.
TOP PROSPECTS
Billy Bethel, 3B/2B, Pennsbury HS
5-foot-11, 170-pounde right-handed hitter displayed a solid feel for the barrel with a bat exit velocity of 82 mph. Bethel starts from a slightly open stance and uses a quiet heel-raise stride to initiate his swing. The junior creates some backspin with a solid lower half and his hands work well through contact. Bethel ran a 7.44 60-yard dash and displayed active feet and the ability to play the ball on the move with an accurate 82 mph arm across the diamond. A soft glove hand and the ability to make throws from multiple arm angles will allow Bethel to play multiple infield positions at the next level.
Michael Weber, C/1B, Oxford Area HS
6-foot, 220-pound left-handed hitter flashed significant barrel whip with present power and a bat exit velocity of 88 mph. Weber starts from a square stance with a high hands load and utilizes a short stride to initiate his swing. A solid hip turn and good tempo allowed the junior to lace line drives consistently during an above average round of batting practice. Weber showcased pop times of 2.15-2.20 on throws of 68 mph from the crouch. Additional work to fully engaged his back side on throws will allow for even lower times. Weber also displayed a soft glove hand and sound feet around the bag at first base.
Jeffrey Wehler, SS/3B, St. Marys Area HS
6-foot-1, 180-pound right-handed hitter starts from a slightly open stance and utilizes a toe-tap stride to initiate his swing. A strong hip turn and a short swing create significant barrel whip with a bat exit velocity of 92 mph. Wehler demonstrated a solid feel for the barrel and the ability to drive baseballs gap-to-gap during one of the top rounds of batting practice on the day. The junior ran a 7.04 60-yard dash and flashed athletic actions defensively. He displayed plenty of arm strength to remain on the left side of the infield and a projectable frame that should give college coaches options for his eventual defensive position moving forward.
REMAINDER OF THE CLASS
Hunter DiDomizio, RHP, North Penn HS
5-foot-11, 155-pound primary pitcher sat 74-75 from a high 3/4 arm slot with a high-knee stack. The junior also showcased a 68 mph curve ball with 1/5 rotation and a 70 mph changeup thrown at near fastball arm speed. DiDomizio ran a 7.31 60-yard dash and showcased a bat exit velocity of 80 mph. The right-handed hitter starts from a square stance and utilizes a heel-raise stride to initiate his swing. Continued physical maturity and strength gains will benefit DiDomizio's overall game as he continues to develop.
Kevin Ehrman, SS/RHP, Central York HS
5-foot-9, 125-pound right-handed hitter starts from a slightly open stance and initiates his swing with a leg lift stride. Showcased a bat exit velocity of 80 mph with limited lower half action to his swing. Ehrman ran a 7.18 60-yard dash and displayed 73 mph arm strength across the diamond. The righty sat 75-76 on the mound from a high 3/4 arm slot with a bit of arm side run to his fastball. The junior also showcased a 65 mph curveball with 11/5 rotation and a 65 mph changeup that is thrown with slower arm speed.
Jordan Martinez, 2B/SS, Pocono Mountain East HS
5-foot-9, 180-pound right-handed hitter starts from a slightly open stance and incorporates a leg-lift stride to initiate his swing. The junior displayed solid barrel whip (86 mph bat exit velocity) and a flat bat path with some length to his swing. Martinez ran a 7.57 60-yard dash and showcased 72 mph arm strength across the diamond. Listed as a 2B/SS, Martinez profiles best at second base. His projectable frame and offensive abilities make him an interesting follow in this class.
Radames Roubert, OF, J.P. McCaskey HS
5-foot-10, 155-pound right-handed hitter displayed good tempo and a handsy swing with a solid feel for the barrel. The junior starts from an open stance and utilizes a leg lift stride to initiate his swing. Roubert ran a 7.23 60-yard dash and showcased the ability to play through the baseball defensively with straight line carry on throws of 74 mph from the outfield. The junior's overall game will benefit from continued physical maturity and strength gains.
Max Schroder, 2B/RHP, Bishop McDevitt HS
5-foot-10, 155-pound right-handed hitter starts from a slightly open stance and utilizes a toe tap stride to initiate his swing. The junior displayed a line drive approach with a bat exit velocity of 76 mph. Schroder ran a 7.79 60-yard dash and displayed 69 mph arm strength across the diamond with a tendency to throw flat footed. The righty sat 71-73 on the mound from a high 3/4 arm slot with an overhead rocker delivery. Schroder also displayed a 61 mph curveball with 10/4 rotation from a lower arm slot and 62 mph cutter.
Kenny Magnes, 3B/2B, State College Area HS
5-foot-9, 200-pound left-handed hitter displayed a short swing from a square stance with a toe-tap stride that led to a bat exit velocity of 82 mph. Magnes showcased a solid feel for the barrel and a quiet lower half that allowed his hands to work inside the baseball routinely. The junior ran a 7.49 60-yard dash and displayed 74 mph arm strength across the diamond while playing through the baseball. Magnes also showed solid lateral movement and a quick release.
Chaz Stevens, RHP/1B, Central Dauphin East HS
6-foot-3, 195-pound right-handed hitter starts from a square stance and initiates his swing with a toe-tap stride. Stevens has a projectable frame and shows signs of some power potential if he can work to incorporate his back side more completely (88 mph bat exit velocity). Stevens ran a 7.27 60-yard dash and flashed 80 mph arm strength from first base. The righty sat 74-75 off the mound out of a high 3/4 arm slot. Stevens also showed a 63 mph curveball with 1/5 rotation and a 65 mph changeup thrown at similar arm speed.
