Mid-Atlantic Fall Standouts
November 16, 2017
This week, On the Hunt, dives into some of the top uncommitted players in the Mid-Atlantic region including Delaware, Maryland, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. Included in the list of seven players are several potential two-way players at the next level, some long and athletic right-handed arms, and an athletic outfielder from the 2019 & 2020 classes.
Matthew Michel RHP / OF / Highland, VA / 2019Standing 6-foot-3, 175-pounds with a long, lean, and athletic frame, Michel comfortably sat 85-87 at a recent PBR Virginia bullpen session. He features a long, loose arm stroke with quick hand speed out front as he releases out of a high ¾ slot. Michel’s easy rhythm on the mound throughout his delivery allows him to repeat his arm slot, and he demonstrated the ability to throw strikes with his fastball to both sides of the plate. His curveball is currently an average pitch at 70-74, and takes shorter, 11/5 break, but shows promise as a pitch that could develop into a weapon in the future. He also flashed a developing changeup at 79-81. Overall, there is a lot to like about Michel. His loose, quick arm combined with a frame that should see significant development in the future could help him develop into a starter at the next level. Expect recruiters to steadily monitor Michel’s progress throughout the spring and into next summer.
